I LOVED the homages to the Silver Age's stories of Superman and the epic end of "The Dark Knight Returns" this underrated episode made
Kryptonite is a rare mineral. Oh, and there are lots of different types. Lots of people actually have green kryptonite and apparently it can be found all over.
The Silver Age was especially funny cause if they needed the plot to develop or for someone to rescue Superman they'd be like "Oh no. A random piece of Krytonite fell out of the sky out of nowhere. Save me Jimmy!" There was an actual Jimmy Olsen where Superman gets angry at Jimmy and then something like that happens.
When that Martian appeared on Earth in 1958, he should have given a ride home to the Martian Manhunter, who was unwillingly stranded on Earth at the time (teleported here in 1955, his people finally came to bring J'Onn home in 1968.)
I love the concept of red kryptonite. I don’t really have a favorite red kryptonite *story* per se, but my favorite *use* was in Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The concept of various forms of kryptonite probably being used as a narcotic in some regions of space is really fascinating, and the idea that those narcotics would affect kryptonians more powerfully than regular people is something I would love to see be explored. Also, I once had an idea for a story that was basically Lazarus Planet, but various types of kryptonite that were vaporized in an explosion and entered the atmosphere, creating kryptonite rains.
My favorite red kryptonite story was the one where Krypto turns into a female collie (who is also pregnant). Krypto gives birth to puppies. At the end of the story, when Krypto turns back to normal, the puppies vanish sadly. I always wondered what would happen if Superman got exposed to this type of Red K. Would he become a dog or would he just become a human woman of a different race maybe? I also like the story where Lex Luthor creates two serums: one which causes Red K to affect non-Kryptonians and one that makes the effects of Red K permanent. He has a chunk of Red K that will turn someone into the nearest other person (or, on a rat test subject, it turned the rat into a copy of the nearest rat). His plan is to turn Superman permanently into Lex Luthor who will go to jail forever, while Lex pretends to be his own "good" twin.
Red kryptonite was always fun on Smallville, but my favorite alt kryptonite on that show was black kryptonite. The Onyx episode where Lex splits in half was excellent.
Most adaptations in my lifetime had Red K make Superman angry or apathetic. But I like the “Lois and Clark…” episode where it’s used more like these tales. Evil *female* scientists (it was the 90s) make a laser that runs on Red K. They accidentally transfer Superman’s powers to Lois, who becomes Ultra Woman. It’s done during an era where, due to their romantic relationship, Lois is aware Clark is Superman, and they participate in a training montage together. Tres romantique!
My personal favorite Kryptonite story is the origin of Jewel Kryptonite from Action Comics #310. The story itself just has so much going for it: all the Phantom Zone Criminals teaming up, the return to Krypton, a review of the assorted types of Kryptonite, and the suspense of what Jewel Kryptonite actually does. Just an all around good Silver Age Superman story.
My first time seeing Red K was in the Krypto The Superdog cartoon! In that show, it causes people to get powers. I thought that's what it always did until I found out about Smallville and the various effects it has in comics.
I love comics throwing in TOTALLY BELIEVABLE SCIENCE into their stories. Because if I'm reading a story about a flying, indestructible alien who can fire laser beams from his eyes (and looks exactly like a human), it's the idea that there's some plausible scientific basis for it.
I really love the "Smallville" episodes in which red kryptonite turns Clark into a cool bad boy. Tom Welling definitely should play villains more often!
My biggest memoirs of Red Kryptonite are from the "Krypto the Superdog" cartoon and it's many episodes using it. As well as the toy I had of Krypto's space ship that came with a big chunk of Kryptonite that could change colors between green and red just by touching it.
I do love Red Kryptonite - it's definitely my favorite K, because it's very rare for anything too terrible to happen with it, and often it's kind of fun. Even Superman lightens up sometimes - and I don't mean puts on a leather jacket and rides down Interstate 71 to Metropolis. I think strictly speaking, though, the *_ORIGINAL_* color of Kryptonite was *_BLUE_* - that was the color it had according to the narrator of the *_Adventures of Superman_* radio series, which I believe introduced Kryptonite, just as it introduced many other key elements of Superman's legend, including Jimmy Olsen, Superman flying instead of leaping and the "dashing into a nearby phone booth" trope. Blue is also the scientifically accurate color for a luminous radioactive element. Not that I'd want to limit Superman to the merely scientifically accurate, of course.
LOL, i don't konw why, but that comment "you gotta make your own fun," has had me chuckling for over an hour. Just the idea that Clark would go through such pains to play mini golf with Red K makes me smile.
I remember a story which introduced "Gold Kryptonite" which "permanently removed a Kryptonian's superpowers." (World's Finest #159) For some reason "Gold-K" has always stuck in my mind. As always thank you so very much for the videos.
Ever since I saw Green Lantern create Green K with his ring, I always wondered if Sinestro could create Gold K and permanently depower Superman. Of course, obviously, he could never succeed at doing that because DC's not gonna suddenly retire Superman, but still... And that's the problem with Gold K. You can't really use it, at least not against Superman. The late post-Crisis version was interesting though. It only depowered Kryptonians for an hour, long enough to be a serious threat, but not enough to permanently end a character.
Three other facts to know about Red Kryptonite from someone who has read pretty much all of Silver Age Superboy, Jimmy, and Lois. 1) When first hit with Red K, Superman experiences a tingling effect, which is how they usually know when the radiations have touched them. Whether or not the effect then happens immediately or takes a bit to manifest could change from story to story, but usually it was soon after. 2) Every piece's effect was unique to that piece and the effect that piece has can only effect Superman ONCE. Afterwards, that piece would no longer work. This was often used as a plot point, such as creating mystery when a piece of Red K affected him anyway or I recall him even taking advantage of the fact it worked only once in some of his plans. (I think a few stories did ignore this rule tho, but it was generally held to) 3) Like Pre-Crisis Green Kryptonite, Red K didn't affect humans. There are exceptions, such as one issue of Lois Lane (forget which), shows Red K could affect humans if the radiations are filtered through a particular light spectrum or rays. This happens to Lois by accident and it causes her to undergo a sort of Jekyll and Hyde ordeal. I think Lucy gets affected by one too in an earlier Jimmy story. Some tidbits to know for that future Red K video. I can't wait to see it as a guy who has enjoyed all the Red K stories he's seen so far on his Silver Age binge.
The idea that red kryptonite has unpredictable effects could be really cool if you play it right. Sticking with the “flying through a cosmic cloud turned a bunch of regular green kryptonite red” would justify why different samples did different things. I can see a villain or even the JLA collecting pieces of red K, exposing Superman to each piece and cataloguing its effects.
I like the Silver Age Red K stories the best. Like the Superman/Supergirl robots, it was a fruitful source of plot twists and surprise endings. Sure, it could get a little too ridiculous sometimes, just like some candy can be too sweet. :)
I just love Smallville's Red K stories, it's simple, and straight to the point. Seeing older takes on it can be fun, but you have to make something different for each exposure, and it gets less fun for me.
Fun Fact. In an episode of the Super Friends animated tV series they did a story where Blue Kryptonite, which normally only affects Bizzarro, was used to reverse the effects of Red K.
Red kryptonite stories are fun, love wacky stuff like the one where Supergirl clears a red meteor and when it inflates her she covers it up by blowing into Dick Malvern (incredible name)'s eyes, which happily was just after he looked through the wrong end of his binoculars. Oh and there's some other weird stuff like her becoming a mermaid and growing two heads.
Going down the Kryptonite rabbit hole again I see … “ Smallville put on your dancing shoes, getting out the Periwinkle K “ Lois to Clark …Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
My favorite Red Kryptonite story was from the 'Superfriends' cartoon series. I don't remember the name of the episode, but in that particular episode, Red Kryptonite gave Superman multiple arms and legs. I also don't remember the entire episode; just that the Red K gave him multiple limbs and one scene towards the end. Superman was trying to open a safe to get something important out of it, but his extra arms kept getting in the way of him turning the tumbler, so Supes just punched open the safe.
The thing about morrison, is he clearly can write coherent and understandable stories. JLA: Earth-2 and All-Star Superman both have some pretty heady concepts but are very easy to understand, so he actively chooses to write wacky stories.
Favorite Kryptonite used to be red, but then they did that short with Firestorm and the pink K and that's been the new champ ever since. Admirably unfazed by things too. "I can work with this."

There's an old episode of the Super-Friends where Superman is exposed to something(maybe Red Krytonite? I cannot remember) that makes him weak and ages him. He uses the Super-Mobile to fly through a bunch of meteors containing Blue Kryptonite, which rejuvenates him. I was a kid and it was the first time I heard mention of Blue K and it's relationship to Bizarro. It may also be the only use of the Super-Mobile on the Super-Friends, not sure on that one.
I like the sound effects. Actually gulping instead of saying ‘Gulp’ the later is how I always heard if my head, Clark just vocalizes words like ‘choke’ and ‘gasp’. 😆
First, Sasha, I just wanted to be sure you knew about Perch giving you a callout in his latest video. I love the various versions of kryptonite, especially red k. I do wish a Swamp Thing writer would latch onto the idea of using white k (which is deadly to all plant life). Imagine the Parliament of Trees somehow learning of a giant white k meteor hurtling toward Earth. It would be the Apocalypse as far as they would be concerned. (Of course, if the meteor was large enough, all us oxygen-breathers wouldn't fare too well, either.) I do have a favorite red k tale from the late '60s, but I can't remember the details. It's probably from an issue of Action from '68 or '69.
Call me crazy BUT: Silver age Superman: Anything can happen for absolutely no reason. Silver age Red Kryptonite: Anything can happen for one very specific reason. Is there a difference?
I love to imagine that kiddy Clark just had a child's voice but Superboy always sounds like adult Supes. Lol He has Yami Yugi big ball energy every time he transforms! 😂
As a Bronze Age kid, I remember being fascinated by all the different types of K. I guess I should have known, but didn't, that it came from radio not comics.
I've always thought it was funny how common such a rare mineral is in Smallville like every other person is affected by Kryptonite. I find it even more amusing how Red K affects Superman in Smallville by making him lose his inhibitions and just have a ''drunken'' good time LOL Wait a sec at 4:12 he just leaves the giant golf club on the ground? :P
Oh boy, a rodeo! My theory on all the kryptonites is, they distort yellow sun energy into a frequency that affects Kryptonians differently (usually harmfully). This would explain why, pre-Crisis, kryptonite couldn't harm unpowered Kryptonians, which would be the case if either there was no yellow sun radiation or they didn't have the ability to absorb it. This also explains Mon-el and his vulnerability to lead radiation: what if lead is reflecting and distorting yellow sun radiation, into a frequency that is harmful to Daxamites? This even explains why kryptonite and lead cancel each other out: they both distort the radiation into a frequency that doesn't hurt either Kryptonians or Daxamites.
Its normally explained that the rocks just emit radiation that's toxic to kryptonians and interferes with their bodies ability to process sunlight. Mon-El's lead vulnerability is due to lead not existing on his home planet, so its extremely toxic to daxamites, especially since lead poisoning is a real thing, except you won't have someone falling to the ground in pain and feeling weak instantly after someone shoves it in their face.
My favorite Red Kryptonite moment has to be from super sons with Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self being split in two because that was really awesome but super in my opinion. :)
I didn't know it did so many things. I always thought in the more recent retellings that red kryptonite just makes supe a normal human-strength dude on Earth.
Truthfully Red K only works in the Smallville continuity where it doesnt even turn him evil like it did in BTBAB but it makes him more susceptible to inhibition. Because it shows not a physical weakness but a mental one. Granted I also grew up on Smallvile so that version of Red K is what I know, but I also was ood enough to enjoy Brave and Bold for its campy style so seeing it as making Supes Evil also worked. Looking back now though, it does work better as the smallvile version
Red Kryptonite being used for weirdness=good. Red Kryptonite being used to make a platonic bomb=terrible. (Alf comics reference) Please cover gold kryptonite next! 😊 And Quex-Ul! 😊 (And yes, Lois's experiment with "Wig Life" as well. 😊)
Sometimes I feel like Superman could use Red Kryptonite to bluff. Like a villain thinks they have a fool-proof anti-superman plan, then Superman shows up with a lead case. He says it contains a chunk of red kryptonite, and he threatens to open the case and expose himself to it, and they would all gamble with whatever it did to him.
Eh, I don't think most villains would buy that. We're talking about The Big Blue Boy Scout here. He always goes out of his way to make sure nobody gets hurt, even when fighting evil gods. You'd have to be a total dolt to fall for that. Now if it was Batman with the case...
My favorite Red K is still Smallville where it turns him into an Asshole with a cool jacket and Motorcycle, those episodes were always my favorite I like when it turns him bad or evil, of course nowadays there's so many Evil or Bad Superman but as a kid watching Smallville I loved it so much and all the other colors too
Wait if Kryptonite first showed up in the radio show that means Kryptonite is public domain, and you'll be able to start chucking it at Supes the day he becomes Public Domain. In like 10 years.
My favorite Red K story is the cover story of Superboy №101 where it transforms Krypto into a collie. A pregnant collie. And he gives birth to puppies that look like his usual form. It's wild.
The other colors of Kryptonite was always such a weird addition to Smallville, wouldn't have been surprised if that show had invented them. But also not surprised that it's golden age old.

I've always thought it was funny how common such a rare mineral is in Smallville like every other person is affected by Kryptonite. I find it even more amusing how Red K affects Superman in Smallville by making him lose his inhibitions and just have a ''drunken'' good time LOL
Wait a sec at 4:12 he just leaves the giant golf club on the ground? :P
Does anybody know the comic book where the panel from 12:19 to 12:20 is from?? I really want to know because I really want that comic book!!
The answer is Superman #177!!
Lavender Kryptonite. It makes Superman feel sensuous and pretty, and like he just needs a glass of wine and a candle in the bubble bath.
I love this outfit it's fantastic. Also so excited for this
I have the issue of Supermans 🦸♂️ face turning into a "mood ring 💍" ... lol
Great video as usual... your videos always make my day ... Thanks
Sasha's Martian voice is sending me😂😂😂😂
Great video, Sasha...👍
The "X marks the spot" part makes me think the aliens made a crop circle X.
Please, Please, Please do a video on the blonde-brunette-redhead Lios Lane story. Especially if it deals with her wearing wigs.
My favorite is when green K + tar makes superman "evil" in Superman III (1983) w/ Richard Pryor & Robert Vaughn.
If there need to be an in-universe explanation for why Red Kryptonite keep changing effects, just say it’s different but similar looking kryptonite.
It'd be cool to see a video over the difference between Marvel and DC's Silver Age
Omg! Red kryptonite turned Clark into Howard Hues! Now he needs a WHOLE LOT of birch wood and one heck of an aviation engineer to fly!
(Alf comics reference)
Please cover gold kryptonite next! 😊 And Quex-Ul! 😊
(And yes, Lois's experiment with "Wig Life" as well.
The shenanigans. Oh the silver age shenanigans.
Great stuff as always.. Higgypopcomics
Red kryptonite is a joy. It’s like a wild sorcerer anything can happen
9:17 So what was the twist?
Great video.
My favorite Red K is still Smallville where it turns him into an Asshole with a cool jacket and Motorcycle, those episodes were always my favorite I like when it turns him bad or evil, of course nowadays there's so many Evil or Bad Superman but as a kid watching Smallville I loved it so much and all the other colors too
11:10 We'll really see shared canon explode? Like Evil Clark?
...
Too soon?
The first red kryptonite story I read was “The Rainbow Faces of Superman” (1964). Fun entertainment.
Ah yes, the “jackass” Kryptonite. Fun reactions from those encounters.
red k sounds like a store brand strawberry soda
Wait if Kryptonite first showed up in the radio show that means Kryptonite is public domain, and you'll be able to start chucking it at Supes the day he becomes Public Domain.
In like 10 years.
I loved it in the New Adventures of Lois & Clark. Red K? Forget ego & super ego, I'm id-boy now!
Can you do a history about comic books and cloning?
1:21 but when!? when will it be that day!?
Off topic, but I saw that you have White Sand. Have you read any other Cosmere stuff? Just curious, haha
The red kryptonite episodes were my favourite in Smallville
For some reason I misremembered the kryptonite in superman 3 being red to find out is was green. the tricks the memory plays on one self.
I remember there was a Superfriends episode where red kryptonite turns Superman into Alfred Newman from Mad magazine ( seriously ).
the pink K is the best xD SILVER Age stuff are so amazingly dumb I love it
Meanwhile, sometime later Smallville is plagued by an evil butterfly.
FWIW, that is a Schott cafe racer jacket, Ms. CC. Just in case you are looking to add to your wardrobe.
