    In my opinion, the VC10 was the most beautiful airliner ever built. I find rear engined more attractive than wing engines, and I love those wide, well swept back wings. The T tail is also gorgeous ! I seldomly saw them at Toronto International Airport (now Pearson), YYZ, but when I did, it was very exciting. Aarre Peltomaa

    What a stunning machine, May 18th 1971. I flew on a BOAC Super VC10 from London to New York and Los Angeles, only wish I could do it again. Flying today may be cheaper in real terms, but you look at this aeroplane, and then you realise how much has been lost.

    When I was a youngster in the ‘70’s I used to fly on a VC10 to and from Iran and I remember having my little BOAC book signed and sitting in the cockpit for what seemed like hours chatting to the flight crew. Good times/memories, great aircraft.

      Junior Jet Club, we had the same (my Twin & I) since we lived in Nairobi. I lost my book years ago, but got a really good copy off e-bay, with only one entry, for my Son. When we flew BA LHR to LBA in 2016 the crew were fascinated, and pulled all the stops, even letting me take a photo of my son with the captains hat on in the cockpit. We tried again with Fly Be in 2019, they were clueless and useless.

    Somehow I love the T-tailed designs, each plane looked so sharp and aerodynamic, the VC10s,, the 1-11s, 727,DC-9/80, Tu-134/154, IL-62. Just the side profile of the sharply raked tail at the beginning of the video conveys a sense of speed and grace. In contrast, the current gen planes, especially the widebodies, look like gigantic flying bovines.

    I grew up living in Isleworth from 1960 to 1979 right under the flight path to runway 27R at Heathrow and used to spend hours seeing the planes arriving or taking off and wondered where they were coming from or heading to. This is a Standard VC-10. The slightly shorter fuselage is evident. On the port side, both entrance doors are forward of the wing. The title "BOAC" occupies a slightly different position on the Standard VC-10 compared to the Super. Both stunning machines to look at, but the Super with the slightly longer more graceful appearance, combined with the BOAC livery creates a beautiful image that hasn't been repeated on the same level since.

    • @xetalq
      @xetalq 6 років тому

      Plus, all civil registered BOAC Super VC10s had a UK registration beginning G-ASxx; the five East African Airways ('EAA') Super VC-10s were registered either 5H-xxx, 5X-xxx or 5Y-xxx.
      All civil-registered BOAC Standard VC10s had registrations beginning G-ARxx.
      The only exceptions to the above rules were G-ASIW, G-ASIX and G-ATDJ (which were Standards that flew with BUA and BCal), and G-AXLR (a Type 1106 VC10 which combined the shorter Standard fuselage with the longer Super wing and the more powerful Super Conway engines). RAE used G-XLR as a flying test bed for the Rolls Royce RB-211 high-bypass engine.
      Apart from the EAA Supers, all other foreign-registered VC10s were former BOAC/BUA/BCal Standards.

    Wonderful, love the sound of the VC-10 and the Super VC-10. Yes Britain made some outstanding aircraft BUT they made them for such small applications. In this case the VC-10 was built to serve “hot and High” African airports. The Trident was too small and underpowered. By the time the 2nd and 3rd versions had been produced the 727 owned the market. Interference by the government was the big issue telling BEA and BOAC what they could or couldn’t buy.

    • @EricIrl
      @EricIrl 3 роки тому +2

      Not quite. Regarding the Trident, it was BEA in particular telling de Havilland they were building the wrong aeroplane and needed to make it smaller. This tehy did - only for BEA to tell them later that it wasn't big enough and asking the UK government to give them money so they could buy 727s. It was the UK government that MADE BEA order the Trident 3B.

    It's like cars, aeroliners having become boring, they all look the same now. The VC10 may have been noisy any dirty, but fast and beautiful definately.

      I can definitely see the VC-10 being the mother figure of the BAC 1-11 due to their use of low bypass turbofans.

      4 x Rolls Royce Conways. I was all of 7 years old when I already knew that fact. I never did get to fly on the VC10 but I regularly saw her climbing out of Ikeja Airport in Lagos, Nigeria. I'm pretty sure the Fireflash from Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds was originally based on the VC10.

    Why can't they make a modern day version of this aircraft with more fuel efficient and noise reduced engines with the modern day capacity. Would make for very interesting compared to the humdrum being churned out. After all if the Boeing landings were described as a controlled crash landing and the VC 10 glided in and took off smoothly and with a short take off!! Maybe I'm missing something. A fan blade short of an engine possibly!
