Hook: Daiichi 1560, #10-#14
Thread: 8/0 or 70 Denier, Olive
Tail: CDC, Olive
Body: Brill, 5MM, U.V. Olive
Hackle: CDC, Olive, Whiting Brahma Hen, Olive
My SLF or Scud Like Fly is a suggestive pattern intended to represent a swimming scud. Its scruffy, buggy look also appeals to a trout's natural predatory nature. Suggestive flies such as my SLF are excellent flies to try early and late in the day, early spring and late fall, and any time there is little to no hatch to focus the trout's attention. I also like to use suggestive patterns when prospecting a new lake or perhaps a familiar lake to get a measure of what the trout might be feeding upon through the careful use of a throat pump. Scuds are a key stillwater food source and trout seldom pass up on the chance to eat one or flies that suggest them.
A choppy hand twist or 2-3 inch erratic strip pause retrieve coupled with a hover, clear intermediate, or type III full sinking lines is my preferred presentation method.

That's a great Pattern Phil, I use different colors variations, works well on a slow retrieve trolling behind pontoon.
Thanks, Al, I am pleased to hear that my SLF is working well for you. What color variations are you using?
Cheers, Phil
Another sage pattern that could imitate so many different things. Great stuff, Phil! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks, Chuck, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video. Scruffy suggestive flies such as these are always fun to fish.
Cheers, Phil
Amazing fly Phil definitally gonna tie a few for my box thanks so much for the tutorial keep up the amazing work👌👌
Thanks Ethan, glad you enjoyed my video.
Cheers Phil
Awesome pattern and instruction Phil. I may be wrong but I'd call that a simplified new age dabbler, I love it! Thanks Phil.
Hi Joe, it does have some Dabbler elements about it doesn't it. With all the fly designs out there nowadays it's hard not to have similarities with other flies.
Cheers, Phil
@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Indeed, but much simpler and still gets the job done :o)
Love that CDC and this looks like a catcher. I Will whip up a few for my upcoming trip to the Waioeka River down-under in NZ. Thanks and happy new year.
Thanks, John, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video. I hope it works as well for you down-under as it does for me up here. I need to get down your way someday soon.
Cheers, Phil
Good looking fly Philip
Thanks for the video
Happy New Year
Thanks, Dave, glad you liked it. Happy New Year to you as well. All the best for 2021.
Cheers, Phil
Trying this at East Lake as soon as accessible!
Thanks Gary, best of luck. Let me know how you make out. We still have ice on our lakes for a while yet.
Cheers, Phil
Beautiful fly Phil. Looks like it would have great motion in the water with the CDC. Thanks, Mohamed
Thanks, Mohamed, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video.
Cheers Phil
Phil, a month or two ago I watched a video I received via E-mail with you and Jordan(?) talking about how to fish Stillwaters and you were discussing the various "zones" of lakes.
I thought I saved it for future reference but looks like I didn't. Is that video still available?
William
Hi William, that video should still be available as we record everything. Do you recall which course you took from us, 21 Days or our Trophy Stillwaters? If you can let me know your email I can get this video to you.
Cheers, Phil
@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Hello Phil, That video was in an e-mail I received from Jordan. I signed up for his mailings.
I thought it was highly educational and wanted to see it again.
FYI, I bought some peacock olive chenille and have been tying damsels. Love how they look and my friends who do not tie got some early presents.
William
Brilliant looking fly definitely will have to try this out .
Thanks, Justin, glad you enjoyed the video.
Cheers, Phil
@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing no problem Phil im a huge fan great to hear from you hi from Ireland 🇨🇮
Great looking fly Phil!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers, Phil
Nice fly Phil. My biggest fish this year was on my olive buggy soft hackle. It's a fly I'll turn to first if nothing else is going on or to sesrch. The Brill and CDC look brilliant together.
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video. Buggy soft hackles are one of my favorite suggestive flies too.
Cheers, Phil
Good fly this will imitate quite a few. Should be very effective
Love the tie, can you do a episode on ice fishing? Thanks
Hi Edgar, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the video. Are you looking for tying videos on flies for ice fishing or actual how to ice fish content?
Cheers, Phil
That fly good for ice fishing? Would like to see what fly's to use and how for ice fishing
@@joemartin124 Hi Joe, you certainly could try it but I would be more inclined to try weighted flies designed to suspend under indicators for ice fishing such as balanced leeches, micro or mini leeches, bloodworm, and bead-head scud patterns.
Cheers, Phil
Like that Phil 👌
happy new year Phil.
I like this fly.
Do you think tying this on a scud hook may also work, maybe a bit more representative of their swimming motion?
Just a thought????
Definitely going to tie a few for spring... thanks for posting
Hi Wayne, glad to hear that you enjoyed the video.
You could certainly use a scud hook if you wish. As scuds swim with a predominantly straight body, only their tail hangs down, I tend now to tied my scud patterns on straight shank hooks. I tie into the bend slightly to suggest their tail section.
Cheers, Phil
Hi Phil, tied a half dozen of these guys this morning, not planning to change hook from your suggested hook, they look absolutely fine with the hook you recommended.
Thanks again!
No problem Wayne, I was just trying to explain the rationale behind my hook choice. I do use scud hooks when thing more realistic scud patterns. Happy tying.
Cheers, Phil
Saludos feliz año nuevo 2021
Some flies you look at and just know they'll catch fish. This is one of them.
Thanks, Barney, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my tying video.
Cheers, Phil
how should i fish this fly? i am very new to fly fishing
Hi Elliot, great question. I fish this fly in and around weed beds most often using a hover, clear intermediate, or perhaps a type III full sinking line. I would use an erratic hand twist retrieve or 2-3 inch strip pause retrieve. Sometimes slow and sometimes a bit faster. Keep experimenting with retrieve pace until the fish tell you what they want.
Cheers, Phil
Ah, another fly to add to the let's tie that in 2021. Good looking pattern.
Phil, any suggestions where I can find large Peacock olive chenille. Went to tie some Guinea Dragons today and no chenille in my myriad of materials. Went online and that search was fruitless.
That pattern proved highly effective last year.
Hi William, glad you enjoyed the video and to hear of your success using the Guinea Dragon. Where are you located? I could perhaps point you to some fly shops in your area where you could find the large chenille.
Cheers, Phil
@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Phil, thanks for the reply. I am in Phoenix AZ and the last independent fly shop here, John Rohmer's shop, closed years ago when the big box stores came into this market. Most (99%)
of my tying material comes from online sales, Canadian Llama, Dakota Anglers, Feather Craft ect.
William
Hi William try the folks at Fly Fish Food. They have large chenille listed on their site. Curtis, Cheech, Lance and the rest of the team there do a great job. store.flyfishfood.com/Chenille-Large-p/chl.htm
@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Thanks, I have dealt with them before, good people!
Peacock olive is a light or dark shade?
nice fly
Thanks Lee, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video.
