Hi Sarah, sorry for late post.. Big thank you for helping me. Recruiters used to reject me because of my portfolio, then after watching this video I prepared my portfolio and got so many interview call. I was hired by Johnson & Johnson as UX designer in 2019. You are Star, love you loads..
WOW .... this is AMAZING!!! Congratulations on your job at Johnson & Johnson. I love hearing stories like this, thanks for letting me know! I hope your new role is going well and that you are thriving!
Wow! I'm realizing that my portfolio could be much better, and why I could have been getting more callbacks during applications. Looking forward to improving my portfolio presentation. Thank you!
Glad to hear you found the video helpful :) In case you didn't stumble upon it yet, I run a whole program that's dedicated to helping you get hired (including creating an awesome portfolio), you can learn more at www.careerstrategylab.com
Just randomly bumped up in this video and I couldn't be happier! Thank you, Sarah! I was feeling lost about how to set up my first portfolio but this video is a true gold mine of information, thank you very much!
You are so welcome! Thanks for letting me know :) Make sure you go read this article about UX case studies: www.uxportfolioformula.com/how-to-write-a-ux-case-study/
New sub, these videos are gold. UX design is such a difficult field to get a grasp on but it feels like a perfect role for me, but getting your head around how to get started is so difficult. These are so helpful, thanks for making them.
Big thanks Sarah really helpful and more detailed description, we need another exemple if you don't mind to show us the process to follow when building App or Website from scratch!
It's really insightful & by seeing this video, there is no room for doubts that either Should I do Subscribe / Like / Save or not. I have definitely done that. On addition to this, I am creating a portfolio and will share this video reference in my portfolio, I hope you will give feedback on that.
Thank you so much, I am just getting started building my portfolio and this was incredibly helpful. I really needed a blueprint to see what this might look like.
This is super helpful! thanks so much, Sarah! I've recently decided to create case studies of all my design work in Keynote as well and just have the core, super high level information on my website and link to a PDF if the viewer wants to dive deeper.
I am really interested in the work and process but the presentation part of UXD terrifies me. I feel like I will never be able to explain how each step of the process brought value to the end product.
Hi Sarah! First of all, thank you sooooo much for the amazing content you produce. It has all been really helpful in preparing my career switch from architecture to UX design. I have a question for you: what is a good length for a PDF case study? I just finished a very well documented case study resulting in something like 35 pages of 1920x1080 format... considering that I also have 2 more case studies on the way... I am concerned that a 80 pages PDF will be a bit too much for a hiring manager to scroll through.... any suggestion about it? thank you in advance!
Well .... you have to ask yourself, "what will I show in my interview?" Personally, I think it is a better experience to present from an actual Keynote, PPT, or PDF instead of bringing up a website. I just think it's a better experience for the audience.
Just a question. When i upload a project to my portfolio as a UX case study and it has all the information with it and my design process and the recruiter is asking me to review it. What im going to say if i have everything written with the project and they can read. Am i allowed to simply read what i have written with the project?
It's very unlikely that they will have read the entire case study before the interview. DO NOT read them your case study. It's a conversation. Imagine you were having coffee with me and telling me about the project ... it would be really awkward if you literally read me the case study!
Hi Sarah, I just started subscribing to you. I think your content is gold! I’m currently looking for a job but I don’t have much experience with UX. I think I have a strong skill when it comes to UI and visual design. I’m working for a really small company and my boss doesn’t really care about user. I’m really overwhelmed where to start >.> my portfolios are mostly visual images without any explanation. Would you give me some advice?

For a project that is huge, around 9 months, making constant updates on one app, what does that look like? Seems like a lot of portfolio examples show MVP's that aren't tested and go through beginning to end designing an entire app as the project. What if one week I'm tweaking copy, another week I'm redesigning onboarding screens, another week i'm redesigning installer screens, another week i'm redesigning parts of the notifications the user receives, etc? When the app has a lot of moving parts it's hard to put that in one project I feel. I've also done designs for new features of the app. And this is just at my current job where I've also done some front end dev, QA and visual design direction. I've also done art for video games, and UI and front end dev for other projects.
Think about how you can break that one project into specific areas of focus. So maybe you have it right now as "Project A" -- but maybe it can break down into "Project A: User Research" and then "Project A: Prototyping & Usability Testing" and then "Project A: Design System" -- make sense?
Storyboard helps to establish the vision for what you're trying to achieve in the very early phases. The user journey shows how the user will interact with the product/service, different touchpoints, and what the user is doing, thinking, feeling etc;
This seems too long? I thought we were supposed to have about 3 projects and maybe like 3 slides per project with minimal details. This seems very indepth to me?
I don't believe there is an exact # of projects to showcase and an exact # of slides per project. It's somewhat subjective and depends on how long it actually feels.
I agree. Feels way too long for one project. Yes it is in depth but no one other than other ux designers are going to read it. People that are doing the hiring don't have the time.
@@3drocket You could have two portfolios with the same projects. One online website for HR which has a high level overview, and less detailed yet quickly express what you can do. Then a presentation done in keynote which is much more in depth, like the one Sarah presented in this video which would be used during a face to face interview.
Way too much text on your slides. Remember you are going to be talking during the presentation. Are you going to just be repeating what is written on each slide? Every slide doesn’t need text.

OKay I like, but this is like a powerpoint-style, how you present this with your actual website?

Thanks a lot
Sorry, what would be he difference bewen the storyboard and a user journey?
Storyboard helps to establish the vision for what you're trying to achieve in the very early phases.
The user journey shows how the user will interact with the product/service, different touchpoints, and what the user is doing, thinking, feeling etc;
IMO you should remove the device from the screens you're showcasing. It makes the presentation look a little bit outdated. Thanks for share
Noted, thanks for the feedback.
