What a wonderful memory! I was one of those lucky people who saw this production - the last show. I met Sandy Duncan after the show, signing autographs and apologizing for being late - cold day in February. There was a mentally challenged girl who saw the show every week and presented her with a gift which was received with a hug and kiss. Peter Pan with Mary Martin was my first Broadway show and now I'll see Cathy Rigby next month. Yes, that was Mary Martin introducing her.
I was a kid growing up with the Mary Martin version of Peter Pan, and although I never got the chance to see Sandy Duncan perform this classic on Broadway, seeing her here reveals that Sandy had the "stuff" to pull off a great performance!
Sand Duncan was BRILLIANT in this role. (Mary Martin still IS Peter Pan ) But Sandy is the actress.. this song and when she's teaching the kids to fly... just an outstanding acting job. She was up against Patti in Evita..so no way was she going to get the Tony. But no matter -- Sandy Duncan is brilliant. WISH this whole show had been filmed for TV.
THe little red-headed boy in the audience is Jonathan Ward, who played Michael Darling in this production. You can see him in action on my other PETER PAN video of I'M FLING.
I've seen Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan, but so far only this clip of Sandy Duncan as Peter. It's frustrating because this looks awesome, and Sandy is amazing, but no one has the full performance of Sandy as Peter in High Quality. If ANYONE has the full show of Sandy Duncan as Peter Pan, in HQ, please share it! She's amazing. FX
Tradition, mostly. There's a song that requires an alto's range -- "Oh, My Mysteriously Lady." Also, Peter's physical appearance needs to be pixie-ish. Between those two requirements, a woman in the role makes more sense.
Gaenelle George it was originally because it is an extremely demanding role, and it wouldn’t be believable if an adult male played the part, so they went with a female. A female would have the right look and voice, as well as the maturity to give the part justice.
Cathy Rigby is currently at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in NYC until December 30th. Seats are still available. FYI: It's staduim seating and I sat in section 203, row V. They were great seats - just bring binoculars. Wonderful production, a bit different from Mary's and Sandy's production - some songs omitted. However, wonderful dance numbers and voices. Go see it!
hey singer4life44, hope it's not too late...this should be in the score, in a suitable key for you, for instance, Duncan sings it in 'B-flat' here, as does the great Mary Martin in her versions of PETER PAN. The 'pop chart' of it is usually in key of 'F', a key more suitable to a baritone/tenor male voice. Make certain to watch & listen to Mary Martin's versions as well. Best of luck.
Anyone else think Julie Andrews could've/should've played Peter Pan at some point? I mean, she had the look, the energy and she already had expirence with flying in a harness. Plus her singing voice, I think she would've made an amazing Peter! But Mary will always be Peter to me and Julie will always be Maria von Trapp even if Mary did originate the role!
She would have done great, but she might have been too feminine for the role. Whoever plays Peter has to have a boyish quality to them. I know she had the short blonde hair, but her face is gorgeous and I personally couldn’t picture her being a boy 😅
I saw her and she was Wonderful!
This is such a lovely performance. Sandy Duncan did a phenomenal job.
Saw this show with Sandy Duncan on Broadway. She's a truly underrated performer. Great talent!
Sandy was pure magic in the role.

I love you sandy duncan
Sandy was always my favorite in this role.

What a shame they never released a cast album of this production. I'm just happy I got to see it twice on Broadway.
thanks so much for posting this, Iloved her

I’m with you. I’ve seen the other two productions, but I’ve never seen Sandy Duncan’s version!
Alison Williams was playing Peter Pan as well
What an awesome Peter Pan she was!
i love sandy!!!
they need to revive this show again!!!
Wow! Was that Mary Martin who introduced her?! This is great, thanks so much for the post!
she is brilliant
she is adorable
For what it's worth, Mary Martin always said that Sandy Duncan was the best Peter Pan she had ever seen.
BettinaBalser can I ask why thy Had females play the role. Cudnt they find boys ?

A terrific performance, indeed. But you neglected to mention that's the wonderful Marsha Kramer as Wendy in this clip.
they need to do it again
R.I.P. Marsha Kramer, who played Wendy.
One thing I remember Sandy Duncan in was when she played Michael and Amy's mom in Barney and the backyard Gang
ROCK.

@bkev93 Was that Mary in the beggining???
Oh my, MARY MARTIN!

@bkev93 It must be.
Mary Martin was always the first, and the best.
The best next to the real Peter Pan.
probably....
Peter Pan
Mary Martin, the original Peter Pan.
Mary Martin is definitely the better singer, but Sandy Duncan has a pretty bright energy she brings to it.
@Claudehb2001 Woo-hoo! Two Texans playing the same role (at different times, of course).
