Back in my school days sixty or so years back, we went potholing at Lathkill dale. An ex pupil was a keen potholer and along with the geography teacher. we went to the cave where the river flows out from only during winter months! all the pupils with fathers who were miners bought safety helmets in for us all. We then went down the valley and went into some mines which are now blocked off! Very adventurous.I like watching your stuff especially Derbyshire items as I am a Derbyshire lad! Cromford and the like have always been our hang out!

24:31 the millstones, possibly the most important find you found, these would have fed the community, where i live, they knocked our local small mill down in the 1990s to expand the lakes, i now have the stones built into my garden wall

Nice, I explored all there over 30 years ago as a lad, no fences or gates or restrictions, lots of mines to explore until there was some collapses and rescues, so they gated them up, also abseiled down the shaft and explored it before they fitted the stairs and grills, all overgrown back then everywhere, a lovely valley to explore! brings back memories. Thanks.

That has been amazing. The amount of infrastructure that still exists really brings the whole site to life. I could imagine men hewing out the stones to make the buildings and the water courses for driving the wheels. Shere magic thanks for posting.

That shaft at batemans house is part of a network of undergound passages now used by caving clubs and just behind the house is another entrance where they abseil down into the system. As you can see water levels are very high in the footage so the drier months are preferable. Lathkill head cave is also worth an explore at the top of the valley which is also a very long cave system which also gives access in the drier months. I recommend head torch for that one :)

You're very good Martin on human geography and industrial history. Super camera work and documentary production for a one man band. Fancy doing video blog going to Ben Nevis from Nottingham? That's on my to do this, I very good on landform and plants.

@@TrekkingExploration During the summer the river can be little more than a trickle. That final waterfall in the video is made of tufa basically dissolved limestone deposited by the river. I've stood directly under it when the river was a lot lower. If you'd continued further up the valley towards Monyash you would have come across Lathkill cave where the river emerges after heavy rain. Great video. You and Martin make a great team.

The road that runs down from Over Haddon to the river is often a dry crossing as the water flow is much reduced in dry periods and runs underground. Because of this the water from the Magpie mine at the top of the hill near Shelden was drained into this river and not down the natural line of fall by Kirk Dale to the Wye. The exit from the mine must go close to Over Haddon exiting near the road crossing?
