  • In this video, Willow and I pack up our two sleds and heads to an isolated remote pond with our ice fishing/hot tent and spend the evening ice fishing and cooking great wild food. We spend the night in the hot tent and complete camp chores all on two beautiful Labrador days. Come along with us on our adventure!

    Chuck not weird at all, I think we just know what beauty we have in our backyard that is free, and just like a holiday we pay for it, know different then people paying to fly in, or fish and vacation here. Every-time I am out paddling or tenting I always say" just think people pay to do this", but because we live here it is free and again in our backyard......cheers Fred in Thunder Bay,Ontario

      Absolutely Fred. I said this to my co-workers when flying up in the mountains of Northern Labrador this past week....we only have to look around us to see things most people would give so much just to experience. As always, love to read your comments

    Thinking about these camping trips when you're on "vacation" it's not weird, I do the same thing. I think some of the best vacation trips are actually just what you're showing us here, usually close to where are we live ourselves. Thanks again for taking your camera gear and sharing these exceptionally wonderful experiences with us. 🏔️👍

    Hey chuck, Just from my own experience, a smaller jig seems to catch more fish in the cold weather months. The fish like small easy to catch meals as they try to preserve energy. A larger flashy presentation sometimes seems to turn them away. Not always the case as you so demonstrated lol. Great vid, I enjoy watching.

  • @HailMale
    @HailMale 5 років тому +1

    Another nice video Sir!Like others have mentioned, we use a small 1/4 or even a 1/8 on. jig, with a live minnow, hooked by the tail. The minnow swims around, therefore attracting the fish. I know live bait's hard to keep alive in the winter months, so, we put 'em in a 1 gallon thermo jug, then add a bit of peroxide to the water, for extra oxygen. Two dozens will usually stay alive all day.I'm no fishing expert by any means, just putting my 2 cents in.Loved watching willow, she never misses a beat...lol

    Just found your channel. Fun video! I would say try a smaller hook for those trout there. Guide them through the hole slowly if you have a lot of ice like that. The larger hook can get caught in the ice and you'll pop the fish off! Better to keep the line tight but slowly bring it up.

    Bend the bottom of your hook a bit offset left or right for better penetration. As a test, place a new hook on some line, lay hook in your open hand, now close hand and gently pull the hook through your hand. You will notice it probably will slip right through and out of your hand. Now bend the the bottom of the hook offset left or right and do it again. with enough bend offset, it should begin hoking up immediately. Tada. learned that a number of years ago and have not lost a fish since, except for broken line. It works!

    This happened to me this winter when I was cutting my firewood my starter got frozen, What I done was got my atv started and I put my put my starter of my chainsaw close to the exhaust of my atv and in no time it was thawed out.So I think you could have got your snowmobile going and done the same,The only thing is the exhaust on your skidoo is on the bottom so it would be hard to get starter of your saw close enough to thaw it out, Maybe if you dig under it you might get it to work.

    Why is it that many Canadians call Brook Trout "Speckled Trout". I grew up using Speckled Trout...now I use both, BrooK Trout or Brookies for the common people, and "Specks" with other local anglers. I tend to say "Specks" out of habit, but that just gets me a funny look from time to time. Same with Walleye / Pickerel...I grew up hearing them both used interchangeably...even though they are two entirely different species, it was common for anglers in my area to call Walleye as Pickeral...I'll never understand why. Also...Specks are the best eating fish ever, IMO...cook with head and tail on, just gutted...in some nice butter and spices.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Yes it’s all about where you live I guess. In Newfoundland (Canada) we have all sorts of informal names for a variety of fish and other animals. Sometimes you have to actually be from here to understand what species we are referring to. One of those things in life I guess....thanks for the comment 👍

She is so loyal-always watching my every move and listening to every sound I make to see what our next move is. She is especially attentive when we are out in the woods. Very good clip thank you. Would love to try that, we get very little snow here. We got as far as NFL a couple of years ago.
    The fishing reminds me of rabbit snares. Years ago I met an old man from a part of Ireland that suffered badly during the famine, he'd a shed where his grandfather stored all the stakes for his snares, he'd about 200, he set and checked them one after the other as you went from one board to another. I was wondering why I never caught a rabbit in my one snare.
    So to eat I guess you needed lots of snares, or in your case lots of fishing holes!!
    Thank you again, love the dog.

      Temps in the tent were fairly warm. Actually it’s harder to regulate the heat so that it’s not TOO hot. I can’t add any more than one or two junks of wood at a time as the heat would be unbearable. The down side to that is you have to wake more often to add those couple of junks so that the fire doesn’t go completely out. The name of the sleeping pad is “woods” and I’ve had it three years with no signs of damage. Very pleased.

      @@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors You mentioned a propane heater, that you didn.t have good success with. I wonder if it was leaking or faulty, a test with your carbon monoxide may prove helpful. Still envious of your trip. Nice idea with the 2 sleighs.

      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 років тому +1

      Yes I have a propane heater which heated the tent very, very well. The main problem was the nauseous feeling u for from the CO and another was the dampness that comes with propane. He tent would be literally dripping all over, especially when the outside temps were really cold

      No I haven’t but I bet it would reduce some of the condensation issue. 👍

    So is this on public land? I'm in southern WI, I don't even know where I could go to that I could just cut down a tree and camp without some farmer showing up with at best, questions. I try to go winter camping every other year or so, but go to private camp grounds that are open year round. It's fun, but so many more rules than have.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  4 роки тому

      Yes it’s all public (crown) land. In fact, 99% of the forest here is crown land. We are very lucky as we can travel, camp etc for zero cost and there’s certainly tons of places to go. Very lucky 👍

      I own about 5 different sleighs of all different sizes and shapes. They all have different purposes: hauling wood, ice fishing gear, clothes, hot tent supplies etc. I just purchased a new pelican 94 which I’m loving thus far 👍

    Chuck what stove are you using?....Fred

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 років тому

      Can't find much info on the stove unfortunately Fred, other than there was one company selling them under the brand name "outdoorsman" back in the day (25 + years ago - I'm old!!) I've tried many companies who sell tent stoves today and they sell very similar versions. I resorted to building my own (a second one not seen in any of my videos yet) as I saw a guy from "far North Bushcraft and Survival" building one on his youtube channel. he does an amazing job of showing how to do it yourself. There is a local company here in Labrador that sells one similar to the one I have only it is 1 inch wider and 1 inch higher, and it's legs fold underneath it as opposed to fitting the tent stove into a stand like you see with mine.

      @@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors yea Lonnie just did a video not long ago on it, what i like about your stove is it is deep. I have tried many and burnt out many, when using the quad and sleigh hauling heavier gear is not so bad, but for quick trips the lighter stoves are ok. Love the channel and the videos....cheers Fred

      They like to do the day trips. Overnight trips they prefer the resorts and balcony coffees lol. When my kids were younger we would spend on average 3-4 months of the year at our cabin. But, of course, at 15 and 18 years of age the priorities change and their focus (at least for the time being) are more “town specific”. We did have an INCREDIBLE trip down south tho and I’m so thankful for that

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 років тому +1

      Nearly all videos get dislikes. Could be something they saw or just jealousy that a video is doing well, etc. The ironic thing is, dislikes act much the same as likes at the end of the day, so really the ‘disliker’ is helping out instead of their intended damage. So we will let them keep disliking on all the videos that people put up and hopefully they don’t read this comment lol. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment.
