This is Kazakhstan, and yes I know what you are all thinking, and yes in the interest of full disclosure we are definitely cashing in on the hype surrounding the second borat, but in fairness so is the nation itself.
Even still this country is so much more than that with one of the most, hmm let's call it exciting economies in the world.
What was once a mistreated soviet state has now gone onto be the largest and wealthiest economy in central Asia, one that is welcoming foreign trade, international investment, and advanced development of technologies to continue this growth into the future.
On top of this, it is a central member of one of the most interesting, and influential however overlooked trading blocks operating in the world today.
But of course, it has not been without its difficulties, it may very well be the most prosperous nation in central Asia, but central Asia is a rough old neighborhood to be the king of.
What with It being home to some dream destinations like, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and also neighboring countries like Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
By the way, a side note is that “stan” when translated from Persian just means a land of. So Kazakhstan kind of just translates to a land of Kazaks, which are the ancestral people of the nation.
Hopefully, that gives some clarity to this rather samey naming scheme in and around this area.
But all of this is to say that Kazakhstan hasn’t and won’t have it easy in its quest to become a properly developed nation but that doesn’t mean that it can’t do it.
So to see what is behind this countries stubborn development we need to look at a few key areas.
What went on under Soviet rule?
What has the country been up to since the collapse?
what is their plan for the future?
Oh, and of course while we are here we have to put the nation on the Economics Explained national leaderboard.

Can you please update the EE leaderboard with the countries you did before it became a thing? USA, China, UK, etc? I put this comment on every video
How high is Singapore in the list?
Can you put others countries you have done on the economics leaderboard?
Westerners: Why do these countries have similar names?
Also Westerners: England, Scotland, Ireland, Netherland, Finland, Iceland, New Zealand...
Still a valid question. You can ask the same thing, what’s up with the “land” thing. I suspect, without researching, it has something to do with lands speaking Germanic languages originally or settled by such peoples in the instance of New Zealand.
Everything most likely is "land". For south america, everything is "ia" which also means "land".

It's great to see how Kazakhstan has gone from, after the original Borat, blocking the movie and putting up a massive backlash. To, after the sequel, accepting it into apart of their travel adverts.
Yup, if that isn't a sign of a change of heart, I dont know what is.
It’s definitely interesting how a country’s sentiments can evolve over time based on the cultural and economic needs
Just two weeks before the travel adverts aired the Kazakhstan MPs were condemning Borat 2.

You know you're out of luck when your country is considered a *fantastic bomb site*
That's actually worse than being called a sh*thole country.
@Abdul van Meert depends on what you mean by harmed. Demographicly, it is certain that USSR brought only deaths to the nation, and Semipalatinsk has made situation only worse. On other hand, most essential infrastructure was built during Soviet era, and it was very important to economic recovery, so it is really hard to estimate how good would Kazakhstan be without USSR
@@anushervontabarov8568 The Kazakhs got lucky they were able to take over all the infrastructure so swiftly. Without the USSR they would've built it up themselves, not be used as a nuclear bomb testing site and have its people working more in emerging industries, or work in more advanced agriculture
@Abdul van Meert yeah, so that is way it is still very controversial topic here. Certainly, over time all infrastructure would have been built, and industries would have been formed, but it probably would took another 50 years or so. In long term, stable and homogeneous demografics that wasn't affected by Soviet mass migration, and large pool of people that wasn't starved to death during first periods of USSR, combined with high fertility rates typical for not post-soviet developing countries would have been a great combination that would have probably allowed Kazakhstan to be something like mini China of Central Asia, but all of it requires a hypothetical stable government that, without post-soviet polical elite, could have wisely use all advantages to benefits of the nation.

I'm thinking of *very niceeee*
As a citizen of Kazakhstan I was very impressed how accurate the video explained the problem in Kazakhstan and some historical time line. However, I think its worth mentioning that Kazakh used to be nomads (didn't farm much) ; therefore, most of the Kazakh never needed to learn how to farm. Eventually once the Soviet came and took all the cattle (that's at least 10 million cattle dependenting the source). It caused a great starvation which approximately killed 40-70% of the population (there is no exact number even in our history books but some mention that's approximately at least 2 million people). As a result, Kazakhs became minority on their own land, inexplictly turing them as a second class citizens. Consequently, till this day Kazakhstan workforce and population is quite small.
I also want to mention that recently Kazakhstan opened its financial centre. Its called AIFC (Astana International Financial Centre). (source: aifc.kz/faq/) AIFC is a financial hub for Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Middle East, West China, Mongolia and Europe.
Objectives of the AIFC are as follows: to attract investment into the economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan by creating an attractive environment for investment in the financial services sphere; to develop a securities market in the Republic of Kazakhstan and integrate it with international capital markets; to develop insurance markets, banking services, Islamic finance, financial technologies, electronic commerce and innovative projects in the Republic of Kazakhstan; to develop financial and professional services based on international best practice; to achieve international recognition as a financial centre. Well in actuality Turkey was the first country to recognise Kazakhstan's independency, not the USA. It took about a half of an hour for their kindred to do so. It's a tiny detail indeed but it gives a bit of another perspective to the narrative of the vid. Otherwise very nice yakjemash!
Isn't yakjemash is actually czech word for hru ? Just wondering
It is easy to understand. Kazakh culture and language is in Turkish group. There interesting idea of Turkish World (like Russian world), that cultures and nations of Turkish group need to be in one union and some people in Kazakhstan believe in Turkish World. Maybe it is a reason

@@yernar9185 Not Turkish, but Turkic.

I've had my eyes on KZ for a while now (and their ladies, as they're gorgeous) and the biggest thing it really needs is a massive improvement in infrastructure, both road and rail. If it can seriously upgrade those two things, it can position itself to handle the trade from Europe and China, as well as take care of a potential increase in tourism, as it has a lot of natural beauty to showcase. Its people are literate and educated, as well as very hospitable. The culture is a real melting pot and politically, whilst its still pretty much a 'managed' democracy (in other words, its a dictatorship disguised as a democracy), its relatively stable. The potential is absolutely massive.
The shortage of infrastrucure for Europe-China trade is exactly why China and KZ are such good friends. Kazakhstan will be the most profitable part of the BRI for both parties.
those things will come naturally with economic prosperity

Thanks for truly video about Kazakhstan. I agree with most of facts told here because I am from Kazakhstan. Corruption and old authoritarian regime are main factors negatively effecting to country development now. The population is small around 19 million but poverty is high, the average salary is $250-300 per month. Some people get more than $1,000 per month but their number is very very low (). Corruption is everywhere here, foreign investors especially Chinese one learned this vulnerability to bribe authorities. Many local people (including Kazaks) started immigrating for better lifes and future of their children to Europe, US, Turkey, Canada etc. The regime is unable to solve the problems cause it is fully corrupted, no trust, no will. It is frustrating thing knowing how much money they wasted for only one city and finally named it after dictator president. No words here, judge for yourself.
You forgot to mention that Kazakh people were nomads that specialized in cattle breeding. Very rough transition into settled lifestyle and famine-provoking Soviet policies of the time resulted in about 2 million people dying in 1930-1935 alone. Combined with a mass emigration of people from the country it resulted in such an extremely low population today.
And about half a million died during the Tsar era, another 1 million men died in WW2.
Soviet Union killed 90% of Kazakh. This is why Kazakhstan 9th (2,7 mln km2) biggest countryman’s only 20 mln population. Also about 1,5 mln km2 territories of Russia is originally Kazakh lands, which are given to Russia by Soviet Union. And Soviets gived some Kazakh lands to China. A full territory of Kazakhstan is about 4,6-5 mln km2. Almost 2x bigger than now.

True. Although, construction in south part is quite expensive, because of the frequent earthquakes, while north and east should account for inhumane cold.
Fantastic as always
Brilliant as always
Interesting just right before i meet my Kazakhstan friend this Saturday.
Update. I didn't meet my Kazakhstan friend last Saturday. She called. F in the chat ^^.

Thanks for the video. Amazing content. Can you make a video or you know at least comment on what Mongolia can do to improve their economy, as a landlocked country like Kazakhstan.
Really great video!
thanks as always for your video
Thank you for the definition of "-stan". Always wondered about it.
Good one here. ua-cam.com/video/rfNTRoillLo/v-deo.html
"The impacts of [nuclear bomb testing] were hard to ignore." Bombs...impacts... Well done.
Cool video and great this got requested by Patreon:) interesting to learn about all the pipeline connections.
At the same time, it would have been nice to learn a bit more about the development of other economic activities (non-oil) in the country if any. Like how the service industry is doing in the country's large cities, and learn about what happened to industry after the collapse of the USSR, and to the agricultural sector.
Anyways, keep up the good work!
I like videos on these lower profile countries. Keep up the good work!
Actually, Kazakhstan is great and beautiful place to live despite what film Borat shows🇰🇿🇰🇿🇰🇿🇭🇷🇭🇷🇭🇷
But borat was filmed in Romania ...
Where are you from?=)
Actually Turkey was the first country in the world to recognize Kazakhstan’s independence in 1991 and this was for the same reason they are such good friends today*
It's always nice to tune into my weekly dose of pretty stock footage! 😊
I also have a suggestion I would like to see. Will you ever make a video on worker co-operatives? They seem like a very strange and interesting alternative to traditional companies, and they have shown some success in America and South Korea.
There many videos I would watch to open eyes and thanks for the video of my country, definitely subscribe and like from me
You should really do israel because ignoring the conflict israel has done massive economic transition from socializem to capitalism and is a very interesting economic study.
Could you guys make a video on the Economics of Turkey? With the recent development in the Turkish economy and its currency, it would be really interesting to see how an once economically diverse and thriving economy country bridging Europe and the East is headed for major crisis.
Amazing video!
Watching Economics Explained has finally paid off. I didn't know there was a second borat
Hey EE, its just Ukraine now. "The" preffix was used when it was part of the USSR but now after independance its just Ukraine.
Especially when they call our capital Keef😐
Yeah, the "the" prefix implies it's a province, which is now outdated since it became sovereign.

I leave in Kazakhstan (I am only a teen),and I have been to multiple countreis like Germany,Italy,Russia and Sweden. My City isnt exactly perfect, but it's good. It's pretty safe, there is no huge social tensions, prices are pretty low,for Instance,a Chocolate Bar is Around 1.2 dollars,0.5(half a dollar) for a bottle of water, and we have very affprdavle housing. A 90 square meter flat costs obly around 140 thousand dollars,so,It's pretty good
I've been there like ... 8 years ago?
The capital looks like Vegas
The rest of the country looks like a CSGO map.
All the money is being sent to the top, the people are left with having to dig through the ground to reach the water pipes that freeze in winter to have drinking water (actual thing my Step Dad (he is the Kazakh) had to do once).
U didn’t mention Almaty )
Kazakhstan actually had a much more prosperous and diversified economy in Soviet times than described in this video. We just lost it all to the oligarchs during privatization.
So true! I come from Eastern Kazakhstan, industrial region which lost most of its potential after SU collapse. This video has really little with what is going on here. We do have a more authoritarian egoistic regime that doesn't really care about regular people here then it was in SU. If you don't have an uncle in gov or in police it's really hard to live here or to do business.
As a patriot of my country, I can tell you about these factors:
1. Orenburg = Orynbor ( Real name) was a Kazakh land, also Saratov=Sary tau, Omby and others..
2. Russian did a genocide in1931-1933 killed half of the Kazakh people ( 3 million ), in that time we were the number one nation in Central Asia!
3. The eastern city of Kazakhstan, Semei has took over 100 time of nuclear bomb test.
4. Kazakh true history and language, include religion had been depressed during the Soviet time.
5. Almaty ” 1986 Jeltoksan rising” was the first protest to the regime in all Soviet centuries, not like some other’s said Kazakhstan was the last country to left, because they don’t want independence.
6. Millions of Diaspora in other country (China 3 million, Uzbekistan 1.5 million, Russian 1 million, and Mongolia, Iran, etc.) haven’t been considered a potential human resource for the country, because of the Russian soft power.
7. Russian language still a official language due to government didn’t put effort to the national Kazakh language so much development.
8. Corruption still the biggest problem in the domestic bureaucracy.
9. Latin alphabet makes things difficult, due to Russian soft power. The Latin alphabet didn’t get widespread in education or any sphere. It changed many versions still couldn’t define one, because the idiot community which have Russian brainwashed member.
10. The well educated people still Russian language users, didn’t have the dignity of national pride or Kazakh mentality. The took so much wealth out of the country, real betrayed people or thief.
But we young generation will take the power and thrive the nation in the future!
Real Kazakh also want to build a Turan union like our ancestors did. 🐺🤘🏼🇰🇿🇹🇷🇦🇿🇰🇬🇺🇿🇹🇲🤘🏼🦅
I havent watched EE for a lot of time and was surprised with this score in the end and the way it is presented. Someone been watching a lot of Doug Demuro, I bet!
Loving these royalty-free music choices!
Never before have I experienced the feeling of being at my daughter's wedding while the best man starts drunkenly explaining the entire economic history of Kazakhstan for his toast speech!
That was actually quite interesting, and Kazakhstan does look very nice. :)
The CIS is not comparable to the EU, and trade between central Asian states is not very open.
CIS is completely pointless and abandoned organization that exists only on paper nowadays, don't know why it's even mentioned there. Eurasian Economic Union, however, is entirely different matter. It IS direct equivalent of EU, but only 2 of the Central Asian states are part of it - Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
@@cianakril even the EEU isn’t comparable to the EU, mostly because of a lack of a common currency, single visa area (like Schengen), and any substantial trade.
Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan also have a lot of migrant workers in Russia, so the main benefit is slightly easier access to Russian visas.
@@danielbenner7583 EU didn't had single currency or open borders in the beginning, too. EEU is like what, 60 years younger? It's only a beginning with decades of negotiations before it will get to where EU is now, still, the framing and purpose of the EEU is exactly the same as EU. Which can not be said about the CIS, an organization is more vague and pointless than the British Commonwealth.
Very nice!
Very Nice!
Love their STANS around them ways.
Thank you, EE. It was very interesting and educating to watch! Kazakhstan went trough a lot of hard times and pressure from Russians. However, it reinforced its stability and is still in a good relationship with Russia. That's what I call inner strengths!!!
Kazakhstan was created by Russians to begin with. What pressure are you talking about? Besides, it is very easy for Russia's neighbors to be on good terms with Russia - just don't join any hostile military alliances (such as NATO) and turn yourself into US puppet. That's all. Russia will be so grateful, they will even turn a blind eye to mistreatment and discrimination of ethnic Russians in such country.
@@sonrazuma1572 created by Russia? Such a bold words. Try to read more books. Kazakhstan had its own history a long time before there was a Russian Empire

In 1999 I hired a guy from Kazakhstan. He was ethnically Chinese, born in Kazakhstan when it was part of the Soviet Union. He had been a professor of mathematics and emigrated to US. Really nice guy. Metal Head. We saw Scorpions and Deep Purple together. He built some databases for us and then when on to work at a bio lab as their database engineer. Passed of cancer a few years ago.
