    The phase plug will help extend the upper frequency range, which is why it’s used on the 2 way. It’s not necessary with the 3 way due to the woofer being crossed much lower

    Very, very cool and helpful. I've been considering the Focal flax components in my 2009 CR-V, so this was very informative regarding the differences better the 165F and 165FX. My only concern now is the fitment for the 165F in the front door panels, but I'm reasonably sure my installer can sort that. Thanks!

    Great Video! 100% agree with putting the same line of speakers for front and rear. When I had my PS165F installed in the front, I had an entry level DLS coax installed in the rear. When I first heard the system, I thought it was the awesome, which speaks volumes of the quality of Focal. But then I decided to install Focal's PC165 in the rear (Not Flax but I believe practically identical). The front's improved dramatically after that, something I did not expect. So yeah, really important to have the same line of speakers for the front and rear. :)

    Just came across your videos, great job mate, and super I formative. So what would you think about a set of Focal PS165FX component 2 way in the front and set of PS165F Coax in the rear and possibly a iBUS Compact Sub under the front seat of a '18 Renault Clio? Would I be able to use the standard audio system or would I need to replace the head unit as the stock might not have enough power to power the speakers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers Mate

    Great vid. Was trying to decide between fx3 and fx. Might come down to ease of install. Fx goes into factory mounts fx3 requires custom A pillar mounts to be made. Does fx3 set delete the need for a sub? Or can you run a sub too? Install is into a Holden ss ute using a jb audio VXi 8 ch or 6ch depending on the use of a sub or not.

  • @MrRoberacer
    @MrRoberacer 6 років тому +1

    Hey James. So the phase plug thing. You will notice they only do that with the 2-way sets. How does it work? Consider the fact that higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths. With that, there would be wavelengths that can travel from one side of the cone to the other and then reflect out with the rest of the sound. The problem comes when the distance is more than one full wavelength away from the other side. With that, those frequencies are actually out of phase with the ones emanating from the opposing side of the cone because it takes time to travel from one side of the cone to the other. Remember the cone generates sound from the entire surface area simultaneously. When the distance from one side to the other is more than a wavelength when the root frequency and it's cousin who emanated from the opposite side of the cone are combined that sound is attenuated. The closer the two same sounds get to 180 degrees out of phase the more the sound is attenuated. Obviously at 180 degrees because of the laws of physics regarding two opposing equal forces combining no work is actually achieved but offsets less than that only show as attenuation. The phase plug actually is there to extend the speaker's frequency response by eliminating some cancellations.

    Thanks so much for the video. I was undecided on the Fx versus the F but this video solved it for me. FX requires bi amping which will require significant investment in amplifiers for marginal gains. Bi amping provides cleaner signals to each speaker but there’s so much road noise and other interference any gains would be lost. Also a smaller crossover is desirable in stealth implementations. It was really useful to see the majority of components are common across the range. I’m off to by the focal 6inch components for the rears and the 5.25 for the fronts and an focal under seat woofer 👍

    • @bankal1442
      @bankal1442 2 роки тому +1

      na mate, it doesn't REQUIRE bi amping, you CAN bi amp it, big difference.

    • @adyandrey23andrey
      @adyandrey23andrey 7 місяців тому

      It's not so much about bi-ampling as much as it is for using them alongside a DSP. It would help you to use time alignment and equalize individual drivers for amazing sound quality results. To each their own, but the biamping is not a gimmick for small differences, it could make big improvements to a system.

    Thanks for the cool vids. Can you run these flax focals at full range? I mean without any HPF. I just hate the lack of lows when the amp HPF is set at 80hz. But also dont want to damage them. I have 165accces A1's driven at full range almost 13 years without any knowlede about HPF. And they are still in perfect shape and sound great.

  • @arose60
    @arose60 7 років тому +3

    To my understanding, the phase plug is to help reduce the speaker beaming as it enters the midrange frequencies, the reason the 3 way version doesn't have one is purely because it's unnecessary as the speaker will not be required to play high enough to need or benefit from a phase plug. From the looks of it, the cheaper "f" variant would probably be very similar to the other speakers but with a few small changes to make it a little more affordable.
    In short, the f3 midbass will be slightly more efficient on the low end as it has more cone area moving and the fx will perform better into the midrange frequencies due to the phase plug, however the f3 will still take the cake with the dedicated midrange.

    • @jameselam8263
      @jameselam8263 6 років тому +1

      alex rose the phase plug is just a marketing ploy so they can use the same frame, cone, and voice coil as the coaxial version but charge you more just to get the tweeter mounting hardware. The differences in sound with or without the phase plug are almost undetectable to the human ear.

  • @endall39
    @endall39 7 років тому +1

    It seems to me that the design difference between the first two woofers (phase plug vs. dust cap) has to do with the fact that the phase plug woofer has to play all the way up to the tweeter frequency (2-way), whereas the other woofer only has to play essentially mid-bass. The "beaming" effect is likely above the range played by the 3-way woofer. Just a thought. Thanks for the great videos. I just found your stuff so I'm binge watching:-)

    • @richardrebecchi7351
      @richardrebecchi7351 4 роки тому

      That is correct, the main reason for the phase plug is to stop beaming (Beaming is directly affected by the diameter of the speaker. At a specific frequency the cone is no longer able to play any higher without distortion. Normally that is where the manufacture would recommend a x-over point) basically the phase plug allows the same cone to play higher. Unfortunately if compared side by side with a full range signal the phase plug woofer usually sounds much brighter and less natural. That does change depending on the x-over point of the woofer.

    I know this is a very dated video, but it’s one of the best I’ve seen on Focal Flax speakers. I have a 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti Sport Q4 with the 14-speaker Harman Kardon system (with a 900W amp). I would like to replace “only” the speakers (no change to the amp or other electrical stuff because the Giulia’s electronics are super sensitive to any changes). I would love to get your opinion on this. I really like the Focal Flax idea, but don’t see any that match the specs of the current OEM speakers, which are:
    165mm Woofers @ 4 ohm, 50W RMS
    80mm Midrange @ 8 ohm, 25W RMS
    25mm tweeters @ 12 ohms, 20W RMS
    And a 6”x9” (odd size for a sub) subwoofer @ 6 ohm, 50W RMS
    I’ve come across Focal, Audison, Hertz, JL Audio and Morel as some of the better car speakers.
    I would love to get your opinion.

  • @281jchavez
    @281jchavez Рік тому +1

    There is definitely a difference between a 3-way and a coaxial. Mid and High Freqs are much tighter than Lows, which 3-ways allow you to install Mids and Highs at a location where you can take advantage of these tighter freqs. Low freqs are very much wider that it doesnt matter if you install low or high you will hear it about the same but no so much for Mids and HIghs. The crossover is different because it has internal components that allows the correct range of freqs. process through each set of speakers. Also has internal components that will process low input sound power and correct it. Short answer, if you want better crisp sound for front, 3 way is the best option. For rear speakers, its only basically a fill in for the front so coaxial should do good. Amplifier also makes a difference on how these set of speakers perform.

      @caraudioetc  7 років тому +1

      Well K2s are definitely a better speaker than flax, so it's really up to you how much you wanna spend.
      As a rule of thumb though I always say put the same speakers front and back, don't mix and match because they will sound different and overall "muddy the audible water" so to speak.
      So if K2s in front, K2s in rear.

    I think one problem of the fx would be fitting the larger xover in the door or in the dash somewhere. How does the xover compare to the Type Rs from the VE build? I have the VE G8 with crappy speakers.

    • @caraudioetc
      @caraudioetc  7 років тому

      Richard Dorrough the Alpine Type Rs are definitely a great speaker for how much they cost, and in my opinion the easiest components to install since the woofer has a tiny neodymium magnet and a built on crossover, and the tweeter is small and easy to install in factory locations and has a pretty small in line crossover.
      I sell a lot of them since they're great quality and value for money. But they're just not quite up with my requirements for sound so I have to spend more lol.
      Alpines are definitely better performing without an amplifier though.

    • @Cinemagoer_64
      @Cinemagoer_64 4 роки тому

      That’s why I’m going with the f’s smaller crossover. I’ve had large crossovers and believe me it makes it so much easier and the sound quality is the same as the fx.

    Try harder mate. If you bothered reading the downloadable technical sheets on Focal's website you'd have seen that the PS 165F3 6.5" driver has a lower resonant frequency (66Hz) than that of the PS 165FX (74Hz). The former is designed for use in the 3-way kit to operate as a mid bass driver only - whereby its low pass filter is set at around 800Hz, whereas the PS 165FX must operate up to its LP filter point of around 4000Hz.

    Is it possible to run Focal PS165F3 passive with Pioneer 80prs?

      You mean active ?

      @@onestrangeone2499 Nah I meant passive, or to be exact I actually mean semi active.. So that I can do that with just one 4channel amp, right? I went for 165fx in the end, after doing some research it seems like it pairs best with my 80prs.. What would you say? And how does it performs to you?

      @@chestermy5211 I would say 3 way active is a complicated route, having only 4chan of amplification would pose another issue. If you are going 2 way you have 2 choices. Keep the passive networks and start off bi-amping them, the x overs on the flax 2 way allows you to have separate inputs for woofer and tweeter so you can control the gain on both woofer and tweeter instead, could be a useful tool for you. Otherwise you could ditch the provided passive units and go active, if I had an 80prs I'd certainly entertain going that route IF you are comfortable setting it up properly that unit has some awesome functions that being said if you don't know exactly how to get what you want out of tons of adjustment,it's easy to get turned upside down real quick and end up with a sound you don't want

      @@onestrangeone2499 That's what I thought too..From what I know, 80prs has the ability to control the so called "3 way", which is high, mid and low(subwoofer if I remembered correctly) instead of tweeter, mid and woofer. Just talked a bit to my audio guy about the focal 165fx and he suggested to go for semi active and I assumed that's what you mentioned as the bi amp right? Sorry if I ever said something wrong because I'm so new to this ICE thing, what I want is just to squeeze every single juice from my current setup and live with it, but I'm uncertain whether passive, semi active or full active for optimal output.

      @@chestermy5211 you are correct about what the unit controls, I'm not sure what the point would be going semi on the 2 way, that would mean for example the tweeters being ran off of a passive network, then having active control over the mid woofer or Vise versa. Bi amping the passive networks will give you separate gain control over the tweeters and mid woofers and also allow you to time align each driver separately from your head unit if I'm not mistaken however you will be somewhat limited by the passive networks, if you want full control over each woofer and tweeter then ditch the passive networks completely and use the active x over on the 80prs, get another amp and use the leftover channel for a sub and have all sorts of control over the entire system
