1) Could they not just dig the other side of the volcano? So the lava would flow away from the village.
2) Could they just not make an infinite water supply flowing above the volcano? So the top layer would become obsidian.
3) Could have put a wall around the house (or village)
4) Could have dug a trench to redirect the lava flow.
