- Weather conditions were on a pendulum between mediocre and dismal, as the Swanage Railway welcomed back a popular winter event to their operating calendar; their 'Winter Warm Up'. The event has been absent for couple of years due to the global pandemic, with the Purbeck branch line making an effort to ensure its return was not something to be missed.
In previous years the event has featured as a one-day-only affair. However, this iteration would be held over two days, on the weekend of January 7th-8th. The event would see four locomotives powering through the Dorset countryside, with an even split of steam and diesel traction, operating both passenger services and a demonstration ballast freight set.
Steam traction would be provided by U Class - 31806 and 34070 "Manston"; the latters first public event since returning from its recent overhaul. Diesel duties would be shared by D6515 "Lt Jenny Lewis RN" and 50026 "Indomitable". All four would be in service on both days of the event, with each making an appearance on the freight set each day.
Locomotives:
BR Class 50 - 50026 "Indomitable"
Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34070 "Manston"
Ex-SR U Class - 31806
BR Class 33 - D6515 "Lt Jenny Lewis RN"
All footage filmed on Saturday the 7th, and Sunday the 8th, of January 2023.
Wow Wow Partsof Rural England Are Beautiful d Ol Trains sweet Stations Countryside Please Put on Again n others its nearly 3.0am here Tks
What better way to brighten up a dull, dreary January than the sights and sounds of the Southern - a little slippage, a 50 spooling up and a Crompy drowning out noisy kids - and hark, was that the clunk of a distant @ 1.26?!!!!🤔 Some great freight movements, station shots and a subtle nod to Adrian Shooter. Well put together Matthew, thoroughly enjoyable (as usual!!!🙂)👍👍
I know Manston is fresh from overhaul but doesn't she sound fantastic! Some superb footage here Sir Thank you!
1.1k views in 14 hours! Great footage. You seem to be a bit of a favourite with the diesel crews.
What an amazing video! Always love to see that Devon Belle observation car! What an amazing video of an amazing railway!
Thanks very much, Chris. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing nice to see this as I couldn’t get there myself so good to see.
I filmed some shots on parts of the line, it was very windy! Great video as always!
Lovely video. I see myself at the end by the cab window filming as I go!
Just the job to start the New Year, many thanks!!
Thank you
Excellent filming, thanks for sharing 👍 It was a nice little event by SR, I think “Indomitable” was the star, and so good to see “Manston” up and running again on the wonderful SR 😊
Thanks very much. This event certainly has been missed over the last couple of years; fingers crossed, it's here to stay.
What a WONDERFUL video, thank you for sharing with us!
Glad you enjoyed it
Your quality workmanship shines through even the gloomiest shots. Wind and weather do not detract from your plans and presentation. Well done
Thanks very much for the kind words. Cheers
Another winner from you Mathew. . You still managed to capture some great footage despite the changeable weather conditions 👍🏻
Much appreciated, Jamie!
Excellent video of the Winter Warm Up event 👍 Gosh it must been a hard day for you with the strong wings plus rain while filming fantastic action.
Great videos as usual 🤩. Never to early to have a gala

Manston's definitely looking good and seems to be running well.
Seeing a '50' with so few wagons / coaches looked a bit weird! Sounded nice.

Although this may have been Manston's official return, I had the impression that I had seen her topping and tailing at least one of the Steam and Lights specials in December, being surprised because I had initially expected it to be 259 Squadron. Unfortunately my footage is too dark to see the nameplate!
Wow
So some steam trains will never be scrap or being put in the Museum
