Great tips Josie. I like sketching outside for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. Early morning sketches are fun and there are less people around. And I use a small pocket sketchbook that's easy to hide. Sometimes if I have a very limited time like 10 mins. I just lay down washes of colour and do the line work later. I make myself put something down on paper and not overthink it. Sometimes it's enough to just capture the mood. I do enjoy the quick sketches I do outside. I still haven't plucked up courage to join an urban sketches group though too shy😁
I love to sketch outside, and do so as much as possible. If I'm sketching with someone else, then we just sit anywhere appropriate. If I'm alone, however, I look for a barrier to sit in front of; a wall, a building, or a tree. This way, I don't feel so exposed, and I am much more comfortable. This can be important for safety, since it is easy to get lost in your painting, and become much less aware of what is going on around you.
I love to draw in but to sometime go outside to do small painting is fun and i can go with bike to park and people in my country are saying nice things or just keep walking so its fun
Great video Josie I live in Sydney too and I have enrolled in a visual arts diploma class and I would love live to do urban sketching but not shore on what group or classes to do . Do you recommendations have a great day xx
Hiya! I'd recommend Sydney Sketch Club which you can find more info about here: www.meetup.com/art-494/ they meet every week and they are lovely - I go along quite often so I'd love to see you there! There's also Sydney Urban Sketchers which meet once a month although I don't think they've started up again yet after lockdown.
Do you have any advice on how to sketch people outside without fear of them looking at me strangely? I feel like I'm only one loser in the comments who can't do this to the fullest. I've been trying to do this for a week but I made few drawings and only their backs.
Try to tell yourself that if you're drawing in a sketchbook most people will just assume you're writing something! And the more you do it, the more comfortable you'll get with it

I like to sketch in my car, watching people walk by and trying to capture them, or in a coffee shop.
That sounds lovely! 😊
