No, simplex devices work on simplex systems. The assumption that only wheelock works on simplex is illogical. And no, Wheelock sued Siemens for patent infringement. As a result of the lawsuit, Siemens had to rebrand Wheelock devices

That first 4903 speaker/ strobe with the replacement speaker, I’m just theorizing that it will sound a bit louder than the others. The reason is because the replacement speaker is an open back design: seen at the 2:02 mark, the metal frame of the speaker is open on the back. The big back box will have a strong acoustical effect on that particular design of speaker. The ones that are just metal on the back such as the one seen at the 0:21 mark are completely airtight from behind, and thus they can’t reverberate through the back boxes and are limited to a much narrower frequency band.
