  • Following on from part one of the our latest #brewwithus video where we learnt how to make the recipe for Utopian's Premium British Lager, in this video we talk again to Jeremy Swainson, Head Brewer, about how to get the best from your fermentation of a lager. We hear tips around fermentation temperature, pitching rates and packaging of you finished product.
Utopian specialise in making traditional lager style beers using ingredients that are from the UK! This approach has pushed them right to the top of the UK lager scene and we feel that the care and attention they have put into sourcing the perfect combination of hops and malts for each style means they are truly doing great things!
Again, don't forget that you can pick up the recipe kit for this beer from The Malt Miller as well as their range of beer from our Indie Beer Fridge

Really liked these videos from Utopia, some great tips from the Brewer. The brewery looks great, need to head to Devon on an adventure 🤩
    Great work all round 🍻🍻

Great video! My road to success in brewing a lager was aerating with pure oxygen when pitching, cold temperature controlled fermentation and a MASSIVE yeast starter! I have bought so much stuff through the years but finally I can make decent lagers!

Fantastic video! I fail time and time again to get a lager right...but ai think I am just not keeping it cold enough. Also, interesting to hear about how you don't want your beer being a yeast starter. That makes sense when homebrewers just direct pitch most of the time whereas a starter might encourage a cleaner beer.

How long does it take them to get the wort down to 7degrees post flame out before pitching the yeast? I think one of the biggest challengers for home brewers is the amount of time that wort is sitting without yeast when it is susceptible to infection.

Not actually sure how long it takes for them to get done to pitching temp. At home, as long as your FV Is clean and you’re careful then it will be fine to get chilled over few hours, as long as you have a good way to get it chilled after transfer that is

I'd love to try the recipe but swap out the yeast for Nova lager yeast 🍻

Sounds good, but I like the idea of using English malt and hops with the Nova lager yeast, I might work out a recipe to clone the utopia lager following your suggested mash and boil profile, but just swapping out the yeast for Nova lager !
I'm thinking of ordering some more equipment soon so I'll try to include the ingredients when I order !
Are you planning any experiments with Nova lager for the channel ?
