  • Checking off a bucket list item with TacAero, learning how to land a Top Cub on a sandbar... in this video I wanted to document the training that went into learning to land on a sandbar in the Texas Hill Country. I have about 150 hours in a Super Cub, most of which are in short field operations but today's airstrip is the shortest I've landed on so far. I learned so much in this process and wanted to document it so that we could all learn from my mistakes. I'm putting together a full debrief of what I learned in this process and will include the link below when it's ready.
TacAero is an elite flight school that specializes in backcountry and tailwheel operations. Learn more at www.tacaero.com/ And no, I did not receive any compensation from TacAero for this video.
DISCLAIMER: TacAero trains at private airstrips to which they have access. This video was for demonstration purposes only. Do not attempt.

Charlie, your humility, excitement, and attitude are what make your videos so enjoyable - you've got all of us rooting for you the whole time. So happy for you that you got to live out a dream!! That last landing was incredible!!

Charlie, this is by far the most fun video I've seen on your channel yet. Great camera work, great editing, great narration, etc. I'm a former wide-body airline pilot (both in terms of aircraft and my own girth, by the way 😆) - and these days flying a Citation in Part 91 ops. Much as I love flying jets (even the Slowtation, if you can call it a jet), one of these days I'll be hanging up my hat and retiring from this game. When that happens, THIS is the kind of flying I want to do. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼

I'm actually surprised you haven't practiced spot landings more. As a flight instructor, it would be good for you to become very proficient in not only spot landings, but power-off spot landings. You definitely want to be proficient in hitting an exact intended touchdown point in a power off/engine failure scenario. This is also an invaluable skill to pass on to students. This is something that takes a lot of practice and time in a specific aircraft, to know that individual aircraft well enough that you can know exactly how much speed to carry, what that descent rate looks like, and how long it will float in the flare, as well as how short it is capable of stopping. All of this will lead up to you being able to pick a good landing spot in the event of an emergency power failure situation.
