      in the past you were always laughed at when you said that you like hearing abba or that you think it's great.
      back then, rock musicians secretly went to abba for concerts. in sweden they were boycotted on the radio because they were too commercial.

    From their mini musical that was staged in their 1977 concert tour: Thank You For the Music, I Wonder, I'm A Marionette and Get On The Carousel. The last song was only in the tour and not on the album but you will see it in clips from Abba The Movie. In the show Agnetha and Frida both play the main "girl with the golden hair". Watch the clip of this same song from the movie and you will see the narrator. This shows the guys musical ambitions and foreshadows them working with lyricist Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Lion King, Evita etc...) on the musical, Chess in the 80s.

    This is certainly a very dramatic song, and a very dramatic departure from what people normally expect from ABBA. It was covered by the heavy metal band Ghost whose fans found it very scary, yet when they sought out the ABBA original many of them reported that they found that one even scarier. LOL. They couldn't believe this was the same ABBA that they'd dissed as a bubblegum pop band! Now, Dereck- you really should check out the opening track of the album- the full-length version of 'Eagle' which is also dramatic in its own way. Here's a great TV performance of it: ua-cam.com/video/ikUAAI9QIg8/v-deo.html

  • @Emmenem68

    The mini-musical started with "Thank You For The Music" where the girl with the golden hair finds her talent in her singing voice. In the second song "I Wonder (Departure)" she contemplates leaving her hometown to pursue her career. In the third song "I'm A Marionette" she finds herself trapped by fame. "I'm A Marionette" was the closing track on ABBA - The Album and was also used as the B-side of the "Take A Chance On Me" single. There was a fourth song in the mini-musical which was never recorded in the studio but was performed on stage in the 1977 tour. It was called "Get On The Carousel", a rousing rocker in which the girl with the golden hair wants to get out of the business. Parts of the song can be seen and heard in ABBA - The Movie, the only place where it can be found. Certain melody lines from "Get On The Carousel" were also re-used in the ABBA - The Album track "Hole In Your Soul".

  • @KYKLOSedmonton

    Love your reactions Derick, you are one of the best on UA-cam. You seem to know what you are talking about. The song was both from the Abba The Album but also b-side of take a chance on me, which was also from Abba The Album. The funny thing about Abba is they were really ahead of their time. As a kid I loved the hits and not so much the lesser known songs. But as I have aged I really am started to love the lesser known songs more. And they still sound so relevant today! Good music never dies!

  • @lamusiclover2264
    @lamusiclover2264 3 роки тому +8

    This is arranged as a theatrical piece. Just imagine this number in a
    Broadway show! It should have been in Mamma Mia! . It is perfect for that. The whole arrangement is perfect for the stage, as they used a full orchestra. This would never be played on the radio. It's not a Top 40 type of song. Just imagine this on a stage with orchestra and choreography. It would be fantastic.

  • @dreasbn
    @dreasbn 3 роки тому +13

    at age 12 i didn't like it too much, but now I am very found of it. It's so good especially the arrangement... I personally hear Frida being stronger on that one. It has that driven psycho stressed beat which underlines the lyrics very well. You can feel the trapped and desperate situation... All three mini musical songs were B-Sides of ABBA Singles. First I Wonder (Live) was the B-Side of The Name Of The Game, making I Wonder the only ABBA song to be released officially in live version before the studio version, Second was I'm A Marionette as the B-Side of Take A Chance On Me and later on Thank You For The Music as B-Side of Eagle. I Wonder is brilliant and Thank You For The Music is one of ABBA's signature songs alongside Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All without being a single hit in 1978.

  • @otisblack3921
    @otisblack3921 3 роки тому +20

    Yes, it is a dramatic song and very dark for ABBA at the time. They had already dealt with sadness and heavy adult topics in such songs as “Knowing Me Knowing You” and “My Love My Life” but here is where Bjorn and Benny embraced actual pathos and borderline madness. I would guess there’s may have been some fear of audience alienation but having made it part of the story line of the Mini Musical it sort of gave them an excuse to get totally dramatic with out the responsibility of making it a social commentary. Without “I’m a Marionette” there would never have been “The Visitors” or “Me and I” so it stands as a penultimate moment in the history of ABBA.

    Both the songs Take A Chance On Me and I'm A Marionette are on ABBA The Album. ABBA The Movie contained concert footage of their earlier hits along with footage from the mini musical The Girl With The Golden Hair, which contained Thank You For The Music, I Wonder, I'm A Marionette and (not on the album Get On The Carousel). and a few songs from The Album that were ready...Eagle and Name of The Game and possibly Hole In Your Soul, which the opening bars can be heard at the start of teh movie. After the concert footage was filmed, ABBA returned to Sweden to finish work on the album, add scenes to the movie, and give some rest time for Agnetha, who was pregnant with her second child.
    The Movie release coincided with the release of ABBA The Album in order to promote the group and the new material.

    Written in 1976. Performed during 1977 Euro and Aussie tours. Jan - Mar.
    The Girl With The Golden Hair
    (Doris Day and a critic on the music industry and what they do to the talent)
    Narration provided by a gentleman wearing mime face paint, explaining the story to the audience before, and between the songs.
    1. Thank You For The Music
    2. I Wonder (Departure)
    3. Get on the Carousel (Live only) **
    4. I'm A Marionette
    Live versions are available. Except Thank You For The Music.
    Vocals: Frida leading Agnetha. Agnetha shadowing. Just like Dancing Queen. Both girls sing, but Frida leading, kinda like a man leads a woman in a ball room dance.
    After a while you can pick out their voices in a nano-second.
    Agnetha - popish style, hard, punchy.
    Her background is record label pop star before ABBA.
    Frida - classical stylist, rounded, warm, very versatile. Opera to pop to rock to torch singer. She does an awesome Pat Benetar in her Live concert I'm 1981. The Beatles too.
    Frida can rock. And can do opera too .Her background is stage since 1956.
    They are very very different. But sound awesome when put together. I liken them to The Louvin Brothers.
    ** It is a cooker!!!! A major rocker, full on heavy fast rocker. A section was taken and is in Hole In Your Soul. When ABBA rocks they can rock.

    Thank you so much for reacting to this one! Indeed a B-Side to "Take a Chance on Me" as both songs were from Abba-The Album. Picture the summer of 1978; I had this '45 and played it to death. I wasn't crazy about "I'm a Marionette" at the time since "Take a Chance on Me" was the huge hit. The B-Side became really scuffed up. Now that I am more mature :-) I appreciate the depth of "I'm a Marionette"; Benny and Bjorn were flexing their creative muscles attempting to test the waters of musical theater which ultimately resulted in the development of "Chess-the musical, in 1984". Both were enamored by the American rock sounds by groups such as the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, yet had deep routes in their signature Swedish musical ascent. "I'm a Marionette" is obviously a fusion of an American 70's jam and European excellence. "I Wonder" and "Thank You For The Music" from the same album are absolutely stunning.

    I'm A Marionette, I Wonder (departure) & Thank You For The Music are all from a mini musical The Girl With The Golden Hair that never was.
    This is just my own take on it : either Frida or Agentha is trapped in a small town living a Stepford Wives existence feeling trapped in the opening song I'm A Marionette, then in I Wonder departure, they're contemplating leaving this small town taking a huge risk venturing unknown ground & then in Thank You For The Music after leaving the small town , they're now perusing their dream on being on stage singing to the masses living a full filled happy life. Now I could be completely and utterly wrong in my take of the storyline to this mini musical but who knows. ABBA actually performed I'm A Marionette on their tour which was featured in ABBA The Movie with Aneghta & Frida wearing wigs looking identical.
