My dad purchased his Martin D-18 back in August of 1945 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and it is still being played by the third generation of our family. My dad was a strummer and led music in Denton Lake as summer Christian Camp in mid state New York. I became interested back in 1956 and as a dishwasher in that same summer (paid $150 for my first summer job) and between washing dishes, I practiced on an old Kay steel string guitar every day that summer and by the end I could play a number of songs like “Kisses Sweeter than Wine”. When I returned home I picked up my dad’s Martin and did a strum (well Scrugg’s finger pick). I could not believe the sound that came from his D-18. I was shocked as it sounded like something made in heaven. Have been playing Martins since and at 78 years I still play them here in South Korea at “live Café’s”. Now I own an number of Martin guitars that range in age from 1934 to 2014. Never a day goes without a Martin in my lap. When we moved her in 2003 I gave my nephew my dad’s D-18. He flew from Seattle to Boston to pick it up and he plays in now. This guitar has been the centerpiece of our family now for 75 years! Thanks Martin for making such a wonderful string instruments.

I just bought a D-15M. Ya, it's not a 18, 28, 35, or 45 but it took me 2 years to save up to buy it. Wife and I don't have that kind of money but I tell you it's the nicest guitar I've ever owned. The setup is perfect. It sounds beautiful. And it's a Martin made in the USA. I love it!!!

True what you say, Paul Kline . I've played for so many years on guitars that were hand me down or used . Most were laminated soundboard tops.
Then I saved up and got a great martin HD28. Then I had to learn how to play better because I heard what came from my fingers so clearly . But it was well worth the sacrifice.

MY FIRST MARTIN WAS A 1979 D35 BOUGHT IN DENMARK ST. LONDON IN 1981 FOR 600 QUID INCLUDING FLIGHT CASE. SOLD IT LAST YEAR FOR 2,500. REPLACED IT WITH AN INCREDIBLE D35 REIMAGINED SUNBURST WHICH SOUNDS ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD! 3 MONTHS AGO BY PURE CHANCE I SPOTTED ON A WEBSITE A 1993 HD28VS 12 FRET SLOTTED SLOPE DREAD. I PHONED THE STORE NEXT DAY AND SENT FOR IT. THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOY TO PLAY AND WELL WORTH THE 4 GRAND. THIS GUITAR IS A REPLICA OE THE EARLY 30s AND MAKES ONE REALISE HOW GOOD THOSE PRE WAR MODELS MUST HAVE SOUNDED. LONF LIVE MARTIN!!

Attended a Don McLean concert last weekend - could not believe the clarity and beautiful sound coming from his Martin D-40DM. Martin never ceases to amaze me! Keep up the great work and workmanship.

I gotta 1953 D-18 I've owned and loved for 40+ years. I see us never parting. I will put it next to any guitar out there. Once had a '63 D-28, but had to part with it when my wife started "feeling funny in the morning"... and at the time we had no health insurance. Son for a Martin... turned out to be an OK trade. :)

Hi guys, I have seen this video before. It is a great history lesson on Martin. I live about 20 minutes away from Martin Guitar. I have visited the factory numerous times, bringing my guitar playing friends from around the world to check it out, of which, numerous times a friend would just order a custom-made guitar right then and there.!! Quick story, I was sitting on the front porch of a lady friends' home in Virginia around 2010?, give or take a year. I see this white car pull up with a Martin Guitar logo on it. I had met Chris Martin a few times. He gets out of the car and I yell down the street "Hey Chris! What are you doing here?" He says, "Don't say anything, but I am here to check out a 1940's D-28 this guy has for sale!" About an hour or so later, I see Chris putting a guitar case into his car. From what I heard; it was a 1941 Model... Extremely rare! Holy Cow, how much did you pay for that one, Chris? I have owned and still own a bunch of Martin Guitars. As a fingerstyle player, they are the best for tone, sustain and just plain old staying in tune! I have known Craig since the mid 80s from being around the Easton area. We are not hang out friends, but I did run into Craig alot back in the day. His bands were always a treat to see in the clubs. He has certainly earned his spot on the guitar planet, and here in this great video of history. Be sure to share this video with your friends, guitar players or or not, everyone needs to see this wonderful history of a family history of the making of the greatest guitar on the planet! Thanks.

What an unexpected surprise. Requires a little more concentration, but nevertheless delivers a treasure trove of information especially in 2022; when we should be progressing instead of digressing! Thanks I really needed that!

Martin, Taylor, and Gibson were buying their red spruce out of Quebec Canada from Boucher and they still buy it now but Robin Boucher keeps the top quality for himself.

    Fabulous company.
I really need to stop in Nazerath and hopefully take a tour. I'd also like to buy from the adjacent component store some if not nearly all the parts needed to manufacture a guitar.

17:23 Very interesting. The old Martin factory made use of the patter maker's woodworking vise. I did not know that, but I can certainly understand why!

Correction: Jimmy Page did not record all the acoustic stuff with a D-28 Martin. A lot of it was with a cheapy Harmony Sovereign H 1260.

Dreadnaughts are meant to flat pick, not fingerstyle. Also, his vocals drowned out the tone.

I would like to add my two cents in if I may. I've been a bluegrass musician for over 45 years, owned 12 Martin's in those 45 years of which 3 of those were HD28's. One month ago I walked into my local music shop, setting in the middle of the store was a Gibson J45 standard brand new 2023 model. I decided to pick it up and give it a try with no intention of purchasing at all. After about 45 minutes of playing it blew me away, yes it wasn't an HD28, but I can say the sound of the J45 was the sound I've been searching to achieve for many years. So needless to say I immediately traded my 2016 HD28 for the J45. I'm really disappointed that I spent so much money on Martin's over so many years and I'm disappointed that I've actually watched Martin drop in quality and workmanship over the years. My recomendation to Martin is you better tighten up your boot laces and dig in deep, Gibson is about to take the lead in Acoustic Guitars. I mean take a J45 to change a Martin nut like I was, times are changing.
