- In this episode, Michelle and Alex check off a new province in the Netherlands -- Zeeland -- starting with a day in the beautiful town of Goes (pronounced "goose" with a hghghghg). Here, they visit the ONLY Wendy's in the Netherlands (or maybe all of Europe?) and try the famous "Zeeuwse bolus".

WHO IS BUNCHARTED?
We're Michelle and Alex, a travel-obsessed American couple living abroad in the Netherlands.
In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... yeah, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change, packing up our lives (and our cats 🐈), moving from Austin, Texas, to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!
Great video again, thanks! 🤔BTW, I’ve been to Wendys in the US on a couple occasions and I believe any article about this Dutch cafetaria/snackbar should be titled: “How a small Dutch business saves Europeans from another US disaster.” 😉
Your pronounsiation is getting better every video, Goes, Zeeland... Not too shabby. You even said 'Wendys' right 😋
the dutch classes help a lot 😂
Kerk was way off though 🤣
@@PickupthePieces76 Yes, like Captain Kirk. 😂
@@bunchartedcan you make a video about your dutch classes?
we want to at some point but we haven’t figured out the “angle” yet
Other little fun fact. The original owner of Wendy's was at that place where you ate the bolus. Indd, the high life 😂 his daughter was called wendy, and the local rumour was that he used it a bit for money laundering 😂😂
Great video again!! You guys are so funny together :D
I want to highlight the Zeeland coat of arms which you only briefly mentioned. It is a lion standing in water up to its hind legs, and the Zeeland motto is "luctor et emergo" (sp?) which translates as "I struggle and emerge/rise above", both of which are really poignant considering Zeeland's history of fighting the water. A very cool combination if you ask me.
that is very cool! 💪
It comes from the battle against the Spanish during the 80 Years' War. The full length of the motto is ''Autore Deo, favente Regina, Luctor et Emergo'' which means ''By the authority of God and the favour of the Queen I will struggle and emerge''. It's a common mistake to think it's about the fight against the water.
Great video! My mom has lived there since the 90s, so I’ve been able to visit many times (she and I are from the US originally).
Absolutely gorgeous town, and I love the rest of Zeeland as well. I have not been to that Wendy’s, but I certainly will next time!
Zeeland is a great province! A little under rated but still a nice place to stay! Thanks Buncharted! 👍
under rated by who? definitly not germans...
@@r.a.h7682 you are right 👍😂🤣
Zeeland is a beautiful place I love to go there. Nice scenery, fantastic history, people are awesome. Should not be underrated at all!
Better underrated than overrated
Both Goes and Middelburg are gorgeous medieval towns. I often visited on boat trip holidays. The G is getting pretty good and it seems less painful now. Its more Zayland than Z land, but you guys are making good progress.
Nice video! Little fact: Middelburg was the middle of three burchten (castles/strongholds) to protect against attacks by the Vikings.
Yay! You’re in Middelburg! My birth town.. Oh I love it there, obviously bc I still know every street and alley in the city, but it’s just a great little package of a city, with old stuff, interesting architecture, pretty parks, canals, it’s a stone’s throw away from the beach (basically a couple of kms in every direction). You should definitely visit Het Smulhoekje, my go-to snack joint after school back in the 80s. It used to be a very small wooden shack, but it got an upgrade a decade or so ago, so now you can even sit outside and enjoy the friet oorlog!
Just found your channel. Nice you visited my city. Keep up the good work
My youth snack bar to go to and still to die for was/is Frans van der Schoot in Oss. Loved this video again, keep up the good stuff!
I remember when the first Wendy's opened in Battle Creek Michigan! Great video, I enjoy all the street scenes.
Great Video,i love travel Videos, ive been there also...in the 90s i often went with my Parents to ZEELAND ..
As soon as you finish this tour of cities in the different provinces, you'll have to get your bikes out to each province to show the countryside and parks!
Glad you enjoyed visiting Goes, my home town
My "snackshop"' was in Zwijndrecht (next to Dordrecht) and it was the first and best Vermoen's Taria. There is a Vermoens in Dordrecht, but the original one was my go-to when i was growing up.
My grandfather was born in Goes in 1903 (but hit the road to Africa by motorbike and afterwards to Indonesia). Be that as it may: it’s a nice city to visit and I will definately try Wendy’s menu, some day. Thanks for your lovable content!
Nice video of my hometown!
Nice to see you visit my province. If you still there I would highly recommend going to Domburg or Oost-kapelle and go to the forest and beach there. In my opinion it's one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands. Also you have a park called Neeltje Jans, it's a park that teaches about the Waternoodsramp from 1953 that killed thousands and a lot about water in general. I think you would really enjoy a visit there.
I'm from Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, you need to go trough the Westerscheldetunnel to get there (and pay 10 euro 2-way) but might be cool to see that tunnel and visit Zeeuws-vlaanderen, the beach side is cool and Hulst is a really nice looking small city.
Edit: fun fact: New-Zealand got it's name from Zeeland, so we are sort of Old-Zealand.
Wendy's. Yep, went there too, just for me it was a few years ago. And yes, friet stoofvlees was what I had after the drive up there. Not the burger, guess that is a reason to return there.
My childhood favorite place to go to for a snack, was the local Indonesian toko. There my sister, my parents and me would order bapao . We would sit down at a table in the toko and enjoy our bapao’s. Happy memories!
If you want to see a nice castle, go to the city, Helmond. The castle is located close to the main trainstation.
Thanx for another nice video! As a Dutchie I’ve never been to Zeeland. Drove through it though on my way to Belgium. Must visit in near future. Oh and Kirk is the captain of the USS Enterprise 😉. You pronounce it with è like èscape. Looking forward to your video about Middelburg!
Nice video 👍✌️
I remember there was a Wendy in Rotterdam, a long time ago, I especially remember they had a large salad bar. It didn't exist there for long though.
Well, your pronounciation of 'Goes' is spot on to be honest. The locals call it also the same as you, without the rough 'g' where we dutch are renonowned for ;). The south of the Netherlands has a 'softer' pronounciation of the G in general anyway.
I was born in Goes. I sometimes make Bolussen. Close to the bakery i always went to the barber. Many lovely cafe's there.
I was born in Dordrecht, lived in Middelburg and now in Goes. Qua nice seeing all those very familiar places :D
Did you check out the alleyway next to the Wendy’s? The ambiance of that is really wonderful.
"wait... what? theres a wendy's?" was exactly my reaction and im a native dutch person
Hope you visited the harbour. Really old and beautiful
Its funny to see how you guys see the city comparing to my view while growing partly up here :)
Favourite snack place growing up.... difficult. Maybe the candy store where I used to buy a lot of fireballs Jawbreakers. Nowadays I would say Bakker Smit here in Hoorn. I prefer freshly baked goods over fries and such.
I understand why you landed in Goes first in Zeeland and there after in Middelburg, because of the good railway connection with Dordrecht. But a visit to Zeeland should also be to the seaside towns because of the beautiful beaches 😎
we will for sure have to go back. gotta get some mosselen too when it’s in season :)
@@buncharted Great, Domburg would be a good destenation for that 😎
@@buncharted you could perhaps take your bikes a long and bike towards westkapelle and Domburg and I am not sure if it still there but you could get some snacks and fish almost directly under a statue of a Sherman tank in West Kapelle
whooh!!! Goes!!!! my home town
The most beautifull woman I know used to live in GOES, alas she lives in vlissingen now also a lovely place to visit. and this is an other great video from you thanks . BTW (i am originaly from the Uk)
Maccano Burgemeester kooimanweg Purmernd so good!! I am coming there for 30 years!! If you have the time please. It is a great city!!
Well the Wendy’s in Goes wasn’t my favourite as a kid but frequently go there in the summer to get sundaes because they have the better choco sauce
You should go to Domburg and try the spareribs in El Fuego. Best ribs I ever had. Nice town to go for a beach day.
My go to place as a kid was French fries from a Chinese takeaway. They typically put far more fries in the bag and they took on a Chinese kind of flavour. We kind of promoted them by talking about them and they started selling more and more. At a certain point they stopped selling fries, because they were selling more fries than Chinese food and the real snackbars started complaining about that. They did make an exception for us though.
Frikandell is the best word 😂the best snack also
Don't know about continental Europe, but there is definitely a Wendy's here in Brighton, UK ;)
Zeeuwse bolus is lekker met dik roomboter erop😊
Another really great (and fun!) video from you people. Also I must say. I REALLY don't like UA-camrs that brand their videos with intros lasting minutes. Its irritating and add nothing. However, your intro is special, unique and last for just 2.6 seconds (I checked on UA-cam) and that is PERFECT. Its short (and odd enough) to be remembered, but not irritating. You two are VERY good at what you do... but SHAME on you for waiting so long to use a bike in the Netherlands....but we out there in UA-cam-land forgive you, because we LOVE you!
thanks! i really liked this intro too 😄
yesss you went to slot oostende, i love that place (you should visit schouwen duiveland)
Nooooooo. You actually came to my home town and I missed you. I work in Rotterdam and every day I was checking out if I saw you guys, and lately when I passed the train station at Dorfrecht, but now you went to my hometown and I missed you :(
The church was used as part of a road (between Korte Kerkstraat to the Kreukelmarkt and back), so carts and all would go -through- the church during service
Bolus: the best way I like them is to (re)heat them in a frying pan and slather them with roomboter.
De Wendy's in Goes (I live in Goes) ;)
Not been to Zeeland a lot. Have had some good snacks and pastries in Middelburg though. The Market Square is nice and picturesque. About the same thing as in any other large town that was also prominent in the Golden Age. If you are in Zeeland anyway, there are some relics and buildings from those days that are fun to include in a sightseeing trip.
But the real one, and frankly, only, reason that makes a trip to Zeeland worthwhile as a tourist, are the Deltaworks, those are pretty spectacular. One of the Wonders of the world, unironically. Ok, and beaches are a bit less crowded than the ones in N/S Holland, and some of the nature, like in Saeftinge, is pretty interesting, Otherwise, personally, I remember the province as eye wateringly boring: endless stretches of grass, potatoes, and sugar beets, dotted with villages that just exude an aura of "nothing ever happens here and we like it that way". I think I would have loved growing up there though.
Stoefflies :) It is a kind of meat that you let sit on the stove for hours, making it very tender. Pronounced more like stovelays :)
10:26 The first one is called a 'viandel', a frikandel with a crispier outside. Waaaaay better than a frikandel in my opinion.
I hope you'll visit Veere as well and mention 1953 .
Favourite snack as a child? Lempers from the local toko in... the town I grew up in, in Zuid Holland. They were sticky, spicy (not hot) and really well filled. Almost every lemper since has been a disappointment (no flavour, hardly any filling)
lemper can be quite tasty 😋
Bacon Mushroom melt burger, yumm. 👅
I was hesitant to watch about a Wendy’s, but the meat stick made my day, what a weird snack. It’s like a child who can’t choose at a snackbar.
My favourite was and is the Mexicano curry, and some Mexican triangle loempia kind of thing, don’t know the name anymore
the mexican loempia sounds tasty
huh, ive been living near Goes since i was born and.... learned some new things lol, also, a wendies? lol
Viandel has the crunch coating
I'm from Bruinisse (next to Goes) Wendy's is my go too
Hey...Goes..that's 6km from where i live...just a bit of water in between 🤣
Ur Goedemorgen sounds great man
You should also check out the beaches
where i live there are 4 wendies in one mall they sell s delicious and healthy Ceasar salad with chicken bits
4 wendy's in a single mall?! is that the mall of america?
Local Snackshop (snackbar) of course!
You stayed in the watertoren?! I did that a couple of years ago!
This stick has a piece of frikandel, another type of frikandel, and yet another type of frikandel. That pretty much sums up the refined Dutch cuisine ;-) I have a sweet spot for Chinese restaurants. Not the trendy fusion ones but the ones that haven't changed for decades. They're having a hard time because there's so much more available nowadays. And there's frikandel. Thanks for the video.
what’re your favorite authentic chinese restaurants in the netherlands? 😋
@@buncharted I don't have one in particular. If the interior is quite dark, if there are Chinese porcelain vases in the windows, if there's a fish tank, if the menu is a bit confusing, and their website clumsy or non existent, that's a good candidate. It's no guarantee but worth a try.
@@buncharted Rose Garden in Dordrecht looks like the type of restaurant I have in mind. Haven't been there though.
Always love to watch your video's! If you go to Middelburg and you're in to fish and want to go for diner....go to fishrestaurant 'Basalt'! The best fishrestaurant i've ever been...next level! It's a pity that it is 350+ km drive from where i live...😢
Looking forward to the next video! ❤
we went to basalt!!! 😄🥰
@@buncharted O really?!! 😅 That's awesome! Did you like it?
All the best,
Pascal:)
i’d say “you’ll have to wait until tuesday to find out” but honestly - how couldn’t we? 😂
it was phenomenal!
@@buncharted it can't be otherwise 😉 seeing out to your next video, keep up the good work and visit Groningen sometime and experience the 'eierbal' from 'Koning'! 🙂
That non-alcoholic IPA is indeed really good. I almost couldn't tell it wasn't an alcoholic IPA. There was probably some alcohol in it though.
I live in goes Zeeland btw
Nice. A video with our favourite americans.
As a fellow Ohioan, I was surprised to find Wendy's in Tbilisi, Georgia. There are several. We ate at the one near the hotel and it was the same as in the US.
The second piece of meat is viandel, frikandal with a crusty layer on it
The food at Slot Oostende, it's better than that Wendy's. :) And there're loads of good restaurants in Middelburg.... also a couple of really good snackbars.
we didn’t have enough space in our stomach but it did look really good
My mom was from Vlissingen, Zeeland. I guess you're skipping the big sail event up north. Maybe for the better. It's busy as hell here in den Helder right now with all the tourists visiting.
we couldn’t make it this year but we would like to see it sometime - maybe in 2024?
@@buncharted those events happen roughly every five years. Same for Sail Amsterdam. The Navy Days in Den Helder are an anual thing though.
Did you say "Het is goed" in perfect Dutch?👍👍 Yes, I heard it....
She dropped several Dutch sayings....
My best snackbar: Friet & Visje in Utrecht.
Yeah it's a same Owner with Cafe de Bure and I help little bit to produce this place at Google Guide 😅
There is an infamous saying about Goes. Hoe dichter bij Goes, Hoe natter de poes. Feel free to translate that..
hahahah what’s the history of this???
Lol, never heard that one and i have lived here most of my life.
@@buncharted A little lingo folklore I guess..Just like "Hoe dichter bij Dordt, Hoe rotter het wordt".
@@buncharted Prolly sailor's talk. Zeeland produced many of our maritime hero's/buccaneer's. Goes, although now more inland most likely had a maritime history itself. Zeeland is one of the parts of the Netherlands that has been extensivly 'poldered'.
No way, there is a Wendy's here in The Netherlands, I must go there
better than american wendy’s 😄
@@buncharted I hear also a lot of bad things about american Taco Bell but the Taco Bell here is pretty good
You should sleep in "theehuis Heidestein" which also has the most beautiful dutch nature. Not cheap.. but definitely different.
Friet en stoofvlees ❤❤
Come to frisian for suikerbrood and sonnema berenburg
I am Dutch and never was in Goes.
Middelburg is awesome!!
Beste friet in heel europa. - een echte Goesenaar
That "Zeeuwse bolus"... We also name a freshly downloaded turt a bolus;). You'll figure out why...
The only chain I ever ate at in the Netherlands was Pizza Hut, in Maastricht. They had outdoor café seating and everyone was eating their pizza with a knife and fork. I remember it being really good. Do they still use utensils for pizza, or are hands fine now?
in the netherlands or in the US? both countries prefer using their hands i think. we went to an authentic-ish pizza place recently and there were a ton of negative reviews about how they don’t slice their pizza (but that’s true of italy!).
@@buncharted Netherlands. And yes, I thought it weird.
At 3:28 the appropriate Doors song would have to be "Riders In The Storm." Oh, wait. It's ON the storm.
Goes as Goose 😂
Now I know that Wendy's in Goes serves frieten with stoofvlees
I am from Flanders, never heard of horse meat stoofvlees, we use beef. But maybe in poorer times horsemeat was used…. Try the porc cheeks stew whenever you visit Flanders
Wouldn't horse be more expensive than a cow?
@@spoenk7448 No, horse is or was cheapest. Example in the poorest district of Brussels, les Marolles, there used to be a lot of “boucheries chevalines” selling only horse meat (all gone now). At my budget universitary restaurant the also served horse steack to cut costs
I'm not from Flanders and have only visited it just a couple of times. But horse meat is most definately served! In fact they make the best steaks!
@@dirkdemeirleir264 The weird thing being that here in Amsterdam the restaurant with the best steaks uses horse steaks, because the flavor is more profound. You're 'budget' university restaurant really knows what they are doing. That's for sure!
Not related to this video, but keep August 6-9 in your Agenda. It is the Pasar Malam in Dordrecht, right where the normal market is. Pasar Malam is Indonesian for Evening Market, however in The Netherlands it is more of cultural event (with lots of food).
Have fun in the best province of The Netherlands!
Aaaaaaah that's why the red hair ❤
I’m from Belgium my husband is from Zierikzee ( Zeeland)
The bolus was introduced in Zeeland by the Spanish and Portugese Sefardic jews who fled at the end of the 17th century to among other provinces, to Zeeland.
It is a choroz interpretation .
Stoofvlees, the best condiment? with fries! Unfortunately I've never been able to find any good ones above the great rivers. Here in the South and in Belgium there are some fantastic ones. The fortune (one of the) of being close to Belgium.
i’m a convert, it was fantastic
@@buncharted Happy you like it. It's especially good in winter. Good to warm you up. Would you call it a gravy in the US?
i think i’d call it a beef stew. gravy in the US tends to not have any meat in it - and it’s pretty thin.
@@buncharted OK. Thanks, I always wondered. There won't always be beef in it though. Horse is still pretty common. The same for kroketten. The good ones are often made with horse meat as well.
oh, right! this one was horse as well. we’d call it horse stew - but no one in the US eats horse, so i’m not sure they’d ever call it anything 😂
I grew up in a fries shop, so I got to know and eat different snacks and later my parents had a brown cafe / lunchroom and every Wednesday afternoon I went to lunch In my parents' restaurant and I come to order everything from the menu that I felt like and I didn't have to pay anything because I still lived at home at the time. Now years later, my parents no longer have the restaurant and the fries shop, but my father still likes to cook for me and the rest of the family, so I still come home for dinner regularly and sometimes I invite my parents over for dinner now that I'm old enough to spoil them.
that’s an awesome story!
after all that, what’s your favorite snack?
@@buncharted I don't have a real favorite because I always like to try different snacks / new snacks. But if I really had to choose, I would choose my father's homemade shrimp kroket and a tasty kaassoufflé and kroket that's what I would choose.
Beer!
Next time you eat a bolus. spread some roomboter on it! thats the way to eat a bolus :D
I believe Wendy's opened up in the UK after Brexit. Is the American Wendy's good? I've been desperate to try it but never had the chance before. Glad you guys enjoyed Zeeland :D
i'm not sure if we love it because we grew up with it and it's nostalgic or if it's actually good, but by fast food standards, they have good burgers and their spicy chicken sandwich is very tasty!
Just wanted to explain that a “bolus” is also something you would flush in the toilet, just to increase the knowledge of how twisted the Dutch mind really is. 😊 so proud 😂. Also some fun activities nearby. In Vlaardingen aug 19 disco terras in the parc. From 24 to 26 aug. Jazz in de gracht in The Hague. Just so you guys know about it.
Well, it does end up there whichever way you view it....
Alex, kurk? A kurk is in a bottle of wine. KERK, the E is like a è……..but you know by now, I will help you!❤️Hil
old habits are hard to shake!
