The satellite messaging is a HUGE deal to me. I do a lot of backpacking, backcountry skiing, and a lot of other off-the-grid outdoor activities. For emergencies, I carry a Garmin Inreach sattelite communicator that costs $300, and have to pay at least $15/month to get 10 messages/month on it. Unlimited messaging costs $65/month. Having this functionality on my phone would be huge and save me a lot of money without compromising on safety measures. I have a server set up at home for a couple of hobby projects, so while watching this video I set up a quick python script to send weather data to my phone over sms. Yep, unless Garmin does something to their business model, time is ticking for the inreach.
Satelite messaging works on the iPhone but the Garmin Inreach does have a much beter antenna for satellite communications. Something to keep in mind. Also the Inreach is rugged and can (and should) be clipped where you can easily reach it when you fall. If you have a phone in your backpack and you are halfway down a cliff you probably can't grab it.
replacing an InReach for a phone while not compromision on safety measures? dude I do hiking and that phrase make NO sense at all. The InReach is more rugged, has a better antena and a better battery than any phone. If you change it for an iPhone you are compromising your safety quite a lot.
The cool thing about the Icon Color thing is that it works on ALL icons out of the box. My one plus phone also had a feature exactly like this, but a bunch of third party apps didn’t work with it so it was basically useless
Well the thing with the calculator has a really long history. There originally was one that looked like the one on iPhones just bigger. Steve Jobs hated it and said that they should redesign it and has shot down everything they have done until they ultimately gave up and of course he died. Ever since then they never wanted to make one unless it would be perfect for the iPad and not just a scaled version of the app for the iPhones.

I feel there are lots of 'new' features that were available on the old Macintoshes - Remote access was available to the central Help Desk (or to Apple Support) in the 1990s; Math Notes features were available on HyperCard in the 1980-90s; You could Type to Siri when it was released 15 - 20 years ago. I still want the Knowledge Navigator! That concept was introduced around 1986. And, I want to change Siri to converse with the JARVIS voice, and snarkiness.
Android (at least on stock and Pixels) has had Material You since Android 12 and that can also apply to icons if you enable it. It comes down to the app developer making an icon that supports it though, most do, but older apps or some that seem to just refuse to for whatever reason (like Netflix).
This actually reminds me of the format war between beta and VHS. Basically, sony would add a feature to try and distract customers from the fact that beta had shit recording time. And then vhs machines would have that feature in the new models. Same here, Everytime one company adds a new feature, immediately gets copied by the other. I like it

However... they kinda busted OneUI and my phone has been kinda funky recently. And I don't know if it goes quite as far as Apple does but thats something Apple has always done better~ when they hone in on a system/functionality, they usually perform it better and more thoroughly than android does.

Must say.. not going back to MacOS, since they removed support for 32 bit apps, i never used my macbook since, and actually sold it. I know about "security risks" and compatability with apple silicon... feels like a half assed swtich. I even installed windows on my macbook around bootcamp, without macos installed to use it, with popOS on the side, but didn't get that to work perfectly
I think the T9 dialing might just be it for me, that was the most jarring change i experienced moving from android. I just couldnt wrap my mind around why it didnt work.

@@Table_knife you're right, I forgot that caveat. Useless for Non-Artist Professionals*, or 98% of iPad owners. Saying that assuming that artists make up like 2% of people who can fully utilize the iPad as productivity tool. I mean other professionals CAN use it for like 80-90% of most daily tasks, but I've found that even the most basic tasks require 2 to 3 times more gestures/clicks/taps or workarounds than just using a conventional Mac and that last 10% actually becomes the most important part because even IF an App 'equivalent' MacOS program exists, it nearly always a curtailed experience where I just have to pick up my MacBook anyways to finish whatever I'm doing. My 2017 MacBook Pro, being like 3x slower than my M2 iPad has proven infinitely more capable in day-to-day tasks.

They really need to update notifications between iPhone and Apple Watch. I want my iPhone to give me notifications while wearing my watch … I know you can do this by turning off wrist detection, but you can’t access sleep data if you have a wrist detection turned off. Sucks.
It is very funny to me that Apple created the same functionality as Recall and was even more vague about data storage, but everyone is alright with it when Apple does it because of the way they market it.

The game porting toolkit is gonna be huge for me. As someone who owns a PC purely because most games (and some other misc software) doesn't run natively on Mac, it's gonna be so nice to actually bridge that gap and not have to worry about "oh well is this game gonna get a mac port" but rather "when is this game gonna get a mac port?" I hate Windows and I can't wait to fully move in on Mac and Linux.

As an Android user with no intention of switching to the apple eco system, I find it funny when people downplay apple's innovations by highlighting the parts that are (even partially) catching up to Android and completely ignore the actual cool stuff to fit the narrative

I can't remember the last time Apple make a unique feature or just had similar or more features than alternatives at the same price. Why is Apple the only brand that we praise for doing the bare minimum at a more expensive price point? I'm not even an Apple hater, I think this is just a normal thought process for someone to have that ends up thinking instead of doing what everyone else does and thinks what everyone else thinks.
A part of that is because this is for the people who already bought the device/soon to buy (which is what matters when you are talking about a free OS update), the buyers have already weighed in on the pros/cons and decided to put the money down on the hardware...Seen from that perspective, these decade long missing features is just more pros...Sure it's embarrassing that it's old...but it's still a pro. For example: my excitement when I saw window snapping on Mac was like FINNALLLY...Do I think it's utterly stupid that it took them THIS LONG to add that in when windows has had this for god knows how long...yeah. But that was factored in when I bought the machine, and it's pure benefit that this is finally coming...In my specific case, I already CONSIDERED not having window snapping when I bought a mac, and (to me) the con of that missing feature was not enough to justify the pros of the mac (see: windows modern standby). It was already part of the calculus of decision making, so a change that shifts the balance that further benefits your side (aka your final decision on the hardware) gets praise. There is no "you could've had this a decode ago if you chose windows instead". When the perspective really is "windows has gotten so bad that I would RATHER give up my window snapping to get out of this MS Operating systems".
@@skifree0 I feel like you're giving way too much credit to 90% of consumers. They, most likely, are not weighing pros and cons if they have an Apple product. They bought it because it has an apple with a bite in it because it's more expensive for worse specs and featureless software. Again, why is Apple the only company that people just buy from without consideration? You shouldn't have to be hyped for a decade old feature being introduced on your device with worse specs at a higher price point. Showing off decade old features at an apple event as if it's some sort of revelation to your brainwashed audience is not a good look. They are still lacking features. The specs are still worse. The price is still too high.

Don't use Prime all that much but always worked fine with me. And the thingy is something that I always liked and wondered why no one else did it. Guess everybody will have it, now that Apple does. :v Anyway, only mentioned it because there's a lot of people talking about it like it's something unheard of, witch absolutely isn't.
Oh, and they now have multitouch, rubber banding, icons in a grid, rectangular phones with rounded corners, full glass screens without keyboards, an App Store and… oh hang on… that’s what the rest of the industry borrowed from Apple. There’s going to swings and round abouts so it’s good to have some perspective when making comparisons about who had what first and when. Just a thought… A developer who uses Android, Windows and iOS.
I reluctantly switched to an iPhone back in December after being a die-hard Android user for 13 years (I need a phone I can get repaired/replaced first party same-day and I'm willing to pay a premium for that) and I cannot express how RELIEVED I am that Apple is FINALLY closing these gaps, not a moment too soon.

T9 Dialing, really? Defiantly retro, feels like as we try to move past SMS/MMS and make almost everything better than we ad T9 dialing and call it a feature. Maybe just put a keyboard button on the dialer app page and use a keyboard to search your contacts by name or number? I’m mean cool for retro but why at the same time.
i feel like these features they where intenally holding back until they needed a stop gap for when sales are just low and they don't have anything innovative in the pipeline. aka now. i'm just not an apple fan. never will be. no company should restrict people on HOW they decide to use there tech. and HOW to have it serviced or upgraded.
This won't get me to swap from my Android device because I've grown used to it and just don't feel like swapping over. But if they had this stuff back when i was a teen and first getting my hands on smartphones I might've actually gone with an IPhone as this added a lot of things that pulled me over to the Android side(aside from affordability)

- window manager: you could install a variety of window managers on MacOS since forever. From simple ones like Magnet to full blown Tiling managers.
- Games support is not a Mac (or Linux issue). The developer chooses to target a certain platform, not the other way round.
- Copilot is a privacy nightmare, not a feature 😂

Must say.. not going back to MacOS, since they removed support for 32 bit apps, i never used my macbook since, and actually sold it.
I know about "security risks" and compatability with apple silicon... feels like a half assed swtich.
I even installed windows on my macbook around bootcamp, without macos installed to use it, with popOS on the side, but didn't get that to work perfectly
The more I think about is, T9 dialing might be cool if they integrate swipe on the numbers keypad for T9…..
I think the T9 dialing might just be it for me, that was the most jarring change i experienced moving from android. I just couldnt wrap my mind around why it didnt work.

@@Table_knife you're right, I forgot that caveat. Useless for Non-Artist Professionals*, or 98% of iPad owners. Saying that assuming that artists make up like 2% of people who can fully utilize the iPad as productivity tool. I mean other professionals CAN use it for like 80-90% of most daily tasks, but I've found that even the most basic tasks require 2 to 3 times more gestures/clicks/taps or workarounds than just using a conventional Mac and that last 10% actually becomes the most important part because even IF an App 'equivalent' MacOS program exists, it nearly always a curtailed experience where I just have to pick up my MacBook anyways to finish whatever I'm doing. My 2017 MacBook Pro, being like 3x slower than my M2 iPad has proven infinitely more capable in day-to-day tasks.

They really need to update notifications between iPhone and Apple Watch. I want my iPhone to give me notifications while wearing my watch … I know you can do this by turning off wrist detection, but you can’t access sleep data if you have a wrist detection turned off. Sucks.

It is very funny to me that Apple created the same functionality as Recall and was even more vague about data storage, but everyone is alright with it when Apple does it because of the way they market it.
Ignoring the very real differences in the execution of the two features to make it seem like it's just a matter of marketing doesn't seem that funny to me, but whatever floats your boat I guess

The game porting toolkit is gonna be huge for me. As someone who owns a PC purely because most games (and some other misc software) doesn't run natively on Mac, it's gonna be so nice to actually bridge that gap and not have to worry about "oh well is this game gonna get a mac port" but rather "when is this game gonna get a mac port?" I hate Windows and I can't wait to fully move in on Mac and Linux.

I can't remember the last time Apple make a unique feature or just had similar or more features than alternatives at the same price. Why is Apple the only brand that we praise for doing the bare minimum at a more expensive price point? I'm not even an Apple hater, I think this is just a normal thought process for someone to have that ends up thinking instead of doing what everyone else does and thinks what everyone else thinks.
A part of that is because this is for the people who already bought the device/soon to buy (which is what matters when you are talking about a free OS update), the buyers have already weighed in on the pros/cons and decided to put the money down on the hardware...Seen from that perspective, these decade long missing features is just more pros...Sure it's embarrassing that it's old...but it's still a pro.
For example: my excitement when I saw window snapping on Mac was like FINNALLLY...Do I think it's utterly stupid that it took them THIS LONG to add that in when windows has had this for god knows how long...yeah. But that was factored in when I bought the machine, and it's pure benefit that this is finally coming...In my specific case, I already CONSIDERED not having window snapping when I bought a mac, and (to me) the con of that missing feature was not enough to justify the pros of the mac (see: windows modern standby). It was already part of the calculus of decision making, so a change that shifts the balance that further benefits your side (aka your final decision on the hardware) gets praise.
There is no "you could've had this a decode ago if you chose windows instead". When the perspective really is "windows has gotten so bad that I would RATHER give up my window snapping to get out of this MS Operating systems".
@@skifree0 I feel like you're giving way too much credit to 90% of consumers. They, most likely, are not weighing pros and cons if they have an Apple product. They bought it because it has an apple with a bite in it because it's more expensive for worse specs and featureless software. Again, why is Apple the only company that people just buy from without consideration? You shouldn't have to be hyped for a decade old feature being introduced on your device with worse specs at a higher price point.
Showing off decade old features at an apple event as if it's some sort of revelation to your brainwashed audience is not a good look. They are still lacking features. The specs are still worse. The price is still too high.

I once asked Siri to recommend restaurants nearby, she answered there was one close but probably too expensive for me. Never used Siri again.
How did siri "know" it'd be too expensive, unless it's always listening which is creepy. I've never had Google say anything like that, though I don't use the assistant really.

Just a thought… A developer who uses Android, Windows and iOS.
I reluctantly switched to an iPhone back in December after being a die-hard Android user for 13 years (I need a phone I can get repaired/replaced first party same-day and I'm willing to pay a premium for that) and I cannot express how RELIEVED I am that Apple is FINALLY closing these gaps, not a moment too soon.

T9 Dialing, really? Defiantly retro, feels like as we try to move past SMS/MMS and make almost everything better than we ad T9 dialing and call it a feature. i feel like these features they where intenally holding back until they needed a stop gap for when sales are just low and they don't have anything innovative in the pipeline. aka now. i'm just not an apple fan. never will be. no company should restrict people on HOW they decide to use there tech. and HOW to have it serviced or upgraded.
This won't get me to swap from my Android device because I've grown used to it and just don't feel like swapping over.
But if they had this stuff back when i was a teen and first getting my hands on smartphones I might've actually gone with an IPhone as this added a lot of things that pulled me over to the Android side(aside from affordability)
