    I grow nettles in my garden, to help my tomatoes out, and for my consumption. If anyone cares to do the research, you'll find nettles have some wonderful nutritional and medicinal properties. Anyway, to keep from cooking most of the nutrients out of nettles (or any plant) I simply toss a few (fresh) leaves in my smoothies, with apples, clover, dandelion and what ever else I can find around the lawn. Something that most do not know, most wild edibles are packed with way more nutrients than cultivated veggies. That's probably why they're more bitter. So I slip a few wild edibles in my apple smoothies, and down the hatch. So, that's my 2 cents worth (or 2 pence for you). Great video.

      Exactly. In reality about 90% or more of what grows out there is edible. Stuff like soja, tomato, normal potato and grass (like corn and wheat 🌾) .. are actually less edible to us than most of the wild herbs, tree sap, sprouts, leaves, roots, mushrooms etc

    I'm a big fan of the five mentioned here. I've been having great success, also, with purslane, plantain, amaranth, violets, shiso, wood sorrel, wild carrot, and more that I'm forgetting. They just keep giving. Many work well in smoothies.

      Where do you live where you can grow amaranth? That's so cool... hope I can grow it too.

    I would add purslane to that list. It is delicious, tender and full of omega 3 nutrients. Also, it grows abundantly.

      Yes I would love to grow purslane as I find it hard to identify in the UK so I thought I should buy the seeds. Which are the best there are different varieties aren't there?

    Clover! I've had it used in a soup to make...clover soup! Asian friends taught me this. Very delicious and delicate. And they tell me it is "good for health."

    Why would you dispose of the dandelion root??!!! Roasted dandelion root is so nice! Also if you roast it until it darkens it can be used as a caffeine free coffee alternative! :)

    Ground Elder can be used as a substitute for Parsley, because it has the same flavour.

    I have every one of those weeds growing in my yard. I also have what I think may be watercress...

    My son loves woodsorrel for it's sour flavor. I've also been eating purslane as I pull it from the garden. Look up purslane, it's delicious and very nutritious. But also look up how to tell the difference between it and purge as it is toxic and they look similar if not shown the differences. In a couple years, I may try some clover flower tea after I'm done nursing and the clover has had time to spread throughout the lawn more.

    Plantain is a great abundant weed and can be used for drawing out poisons from wounds or bites and stings. I have used long leaf plantain for infected gums to instantly heal them,they should be washed and chewed and made into a poultice for the infected area. Also they make an excellent vegetable as they have a mushroom taste.

      I've tried eating the plantains and they do indeed have a mushroom taste - very good eating.

    First let me say that I am so glad I subscribed to this channel! I am learning a lot! Clover sprouts are sold in our stores. Would that be the say as mentioned below? We have used dandelions to color eggs.

    not weeds, but I thought to share about brassica leaves which are edible. We grow the plants for the head or flower, as in Broccoli, but the many large leaves get discarded, and thus waste food. Leaves of Cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are also edible, as are carrot tops and sweet potato leaves.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  10 років тому

      Good point, thanks. I also remove the tough outer part of broccoli stems and the inside can be cooked in stir-frys or similar. Same with cauliflower.

    I think the nettle stinging demo was a little unnecessary...also, if you're gonna eat dandelions, leave the flowers alone. Just take the leaves. The bees rely on dandelion flowers when other flowers are in short supply.

    I don't suppose bindweed is edible? Thanks for a very informative video!

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  9 років тому

      +Speedmarx Bindweed is edible but tastes very bitter, so isn't recommended. The leaves are said to have a purgative effect, so perhaps best left alone!

    but isn't a weed by definition an un wanted plant so any edible plant can be a weed if its grow in an area you dont want it

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  4 роки тому

      That's very true John. A weed could just be a 'volunteer' crop popping up where it isn't wanted. But for the sake of this video we're talking about classic weeds - the sorts that sprout up just about anywhere and that are rarely wanted.

    The copper is just for comic relief, right? Who can afford copper pipes that size? I've found aluminum foil more effective, and it doesn't patina like copper.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  10 років тому

      Pat Fox Yes, just for comic relief. You can get copper adhesive strip which goes around pots and raised beds but the jury is out on how effective it is.

    This video could be highly dangerous since it encourages people to use
    garden plants as medicine. Someone could mistakenly identify toxic
    plants as the ones shown in the video and end up poisoning
    themselves......
