Been using this from October last year. Excellent. Absolutely satisfied. Brilliant performance. Good camera. Gets a security patch every month. Running Android 8.0 as of now with April Security Patch. Great at gaming. Looks good. Very decent battery. Has 32 bit DAC inside headphone jack, one of the best sound qualities you can get through headphone jack in a smartphone. Real champ 👍🏻✌🏻

Making a comment after using it for 3 years .. Best ever phone i purchased ❤️
I have been using flagship devices since the era of the S3 and Nexus S. This time I said "Fcuk it!" and got this Mi A1 instead. I am very happy with my choice. The camera is the most noticeable you-are-not-using-a-flagship part, but it still was able to produceo on par photos with my wife's S6 which is a flagship from only 3 years ago.

After 17 months, this phone is still super snappy. It is currently on Android 9, 11/2019 Security Patch. Decent camera, sound quality and power. Clean software. Still worth it under $200 price point at the moment.

One of the most common reason is that because of battery life being depleted so fast on inconvenient situations, they don't have a place to charge their phone. And now with new phones, you can't remove the battery anymore and swap another one like in the outdated models like the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Note 4. So should this happen, users will take their sim card out and install it in the back up phone while their primary one is dead or until they find a spot to charge it.

Lou, I have this exact phone in black and I can say I'm extremely pleased with it. It gets the job done, period. Decent photos, good battery, and since I don't use it in the office too much the battery lasts me 2 days. Xiaomi did one hell of a job.

I have installed Google Camera from pixel 2 and is marvelous.
Great work.
Is one of the best budget smartphone and although the camera is not a the level of the pixel 2xl it's very good it's has a good portrait mode and there is a version of 64gb for 230 dollars that is the one I recommend. The camera has slow motion video and 4k 30fps, the only feature I really missed is optical stabilization, I now it's not a smartphone with no vessels or is not design is very original (iphone7) but it's the smartphone which has a little bit of all and there isn't something where it have lots of fails and for the the price it has it blows out other brands with similar "budget" phones.(Sorry if my English is not the best, I'am from Europe...)

The Mi A1 is pretty good for a mid-range device, maybe one of the best out there actually in terms of price to value ratio. Lew already mentioned it briefly in this video, but I want to emphasize it a bit more - the CAMERA. It doesn't come near any of the flagship devices and the lenses and software they use. The video recording on the Mi A1 has no image stabilization for example. Videos turn out to be extremely shaky, be it because your hand moves a little, or because you're walking or driving. You might as well not use the video function at all, that's how bad the shaking is. The photos on the other hand aren't as much a deal breaker. Yes the lenses and software isn't comparable to the pixel 2, but you still get a decent photo IN GOOD LIGHTING. That much is for sure. I would not recommend using the camera to take pictures in low lighting though (in the evening, at night, in dark rooms, etc.) - a lot of details get lost in the picture. The front facing camera is mediocre too. So there you go.
Overall, using the Mi A1 as a consumption device won't disappoint you. Good performance and stock android will cater to most of your needs. The camera is not something you should rely on when you buy this though. Keep that in mind.
If you want a better camera, look into the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (which just came out in February). It does have image stabilization for video recording, the camera is about as good as on the Mi A1, and you get a 20MP front facing camera (that's not a typo, it's 20MP) for selfies etc. That might be a better budget phone for you if you're into photography and Instagram/Facebook etc. However, the Note 5 Pro comes with the MIUI operating system, not stock android like the Mi A1, which for me personally is a deal breaker. Jesus, what are these Chinese companies doing. They should have stock android on all their phones - then I would get the Note 5 Pro for sure. But not like this...

I got it since October and it is awesome! It is still snappy. There camera is not the best, but after you get used to it you can make decent pictures: it takes some effort and a steady hand.

I have a Mi A1 and my mum received the note 5 pro last week. It is excellent, except for the camera. I will however try to install the Google Pixel Camera as I did on the Mi A1 and then it is okay. The display of the Note 5 Pro is outstanding, as well is the speaker. The batterylife is very good too. I however prefer the software of the Mi A1, although MIUI is supported for years as well so don't worry about that. With a launcher it is almost the same. They were even bringing out updates for a 2012 phone this year.

Cause of its slim metal body, case manufacturer innovates a killer looked casing. Thats why the Mi A1 was not just a mid range but also a flag ship killer..
