Honestly I wish people would also help the kid that was "distracting" the kid. I used to accidently distract people and not know it, yet when i was sorry I was still "the bad guy". Please if someone is "distracting" someone explain that it's okay to not be aware that the person is struggling. She even said sorry and nobody reassured her.

I agree, the support should at least be mutual and it would really make a big difference to have awareness for both childrens’ needs but I think what the teacher did in this situation was a good first step, I appreciate how she didn’t scold the kid that was clicking and explained the situation. I’m sorry that you had to go through those things, everyone makes mistakes and i really appreciate that you were sorry when you accidentally did those things, I’m sorry that you apologies weren’t acknowledged. I hope you are doing better now and are being treated better.❤

I had so many kids shake my desk with their leg bouncing and I couldn't say anything for fear of being bullied more. To this day I still get enraged thinking about it. I don't mind anything else but don't shake me.

Fr but my school had a low budget and they did the best they could because a lot of kids were purposely breaking things making them buy more and I think I was quite lucky with my teacher cause my teacher took her own money to buy fidgets and she had them in a bucket for anybody feeling anxious or angry ect. This was all in primary school cause my mum pulled me out of school in year 5 and honestly I'm glad she did cause having a lot of my dad's personality I'd get into a lot of fights in secondary I can't stand chavs and road men which is bad cause I live in the UK

I had a friend in elementary school with ASD. He had frequent sensory overload episodes, and I had the honor of being the only student that could bring him out of it. I also could shut down an entire room of yelling kids in my class so he could focus on my voice. 😅

I feel bad for sure when distracting fellow students from learning, but I really can't help but bounce my leg in trying to concentrate.

E.X. I went to the principal to tell her about some bullying I was dealing with, I brought up that I was audio sensitive and that people would intentionally do stuff to trigger me (click their pen while staring directly at me and denying that they did it when I ask them to stop) the principal said she’d deal with it, they talked about the bullying but not the intentional triggering, my teacher also told me to “just ignore them” which I had tried and failed to do… so thanks teacher!

They can do something, from banning click pens in the class to allowing you headphones. Its amazing how quickly they will do something when you get your parents and possibly a lawyer involved when they fail to protect you from bullying. Tapping the pen can also be part of releasing anxiety. I have a fidget that I can tap and I have to hear the noise or it doesn’t work for me. My mom hates it and will be rude about is, so instead of tapping the pen/fidget, I’m biting my nails until they are wounds.
Edit: Also that ‘loud student’ wasn’t being loud. And just because they process things differently doesn’t mean it’s the other students fault. Kid needs to be deal with, without putting the blame on others. Those are normal habits, especially with anxiety.

@L_ghtBulb I get that but nobody is more important than anybody else. It's one thing to ask her to stop for a few minutes, it's another to ask her to stop entirely. Just because someone isn't loud doesn't mean their issues aren't as valid. I literally am physically incapable of complaining, it terrifies me but being reprimanded and losing my ability to soothe would have me really upset and shut down (I don't generally cry but I'd be as close as possible) I would learn nothing for the rest of the day and my brain MIGHT fully check out of that class entirely for the rest of the year.

The thing I'd be correcting right away is that the student cannot immediately freak out at the other student and become immediately mad at them for clicking their pen or fanning themself with their paper. So many kiddos I have to teach to talk to their peers with gentle language instead of immediately putting them down or getting angry when they haven't even expressed their needs or wants yet.

It’s not your fault that you clicked your pen subconsciously, it’s calming for some people, it’s not like you were doing it to deliberately provoke people, you also didn’t know about these things, I’m autistic and I really struggle with being over sensory but a huge reason why these situations happen in the first place are that people aren’t aware of these things or how to deal with them. At least you know now but that doesn’t mean you should completely change your habits for others at your own expense, just being aware that some people have sensory issues is already very helpful.❤

Formally diagnosed with ADHD, this was one of the most distracting things when I was in school. Kids would talk during an assignment or a test and it was always so distracting, not to mention the sensory overload from pure chaos happening around me. I didn’t get diagnosed until after high school, so I was unable to receive accommodations. Not to mention, my school didn’t care much for students with disabilities. They were just labeled weird and a lot of them ended up being lumped into one classroom, separate from the rest of the school like they were some sort of disease (they’re not). It was a bit of a culture shock when I switched schools halfway through my senior year and they treated the kids like normal human beings.

    • @angelalovell5669

Okay Sarah, you HAVE to start rereading your comments before you post. You just said that one person should take responsibility for their sensory issues (happens to be the ND kid) but the other one doesn't have to take responsibility for being self centered and unconcerned about others? What the heck is THAT about?
You just implied that the person who is part of a marginalised group that already has a harder time existing in our world than others, should have to be more vigilant, more responsible and more financially stable than someone who has less challenges to deal with. That is not only discriminative and illogical, it's also dismissive and rude.
And you haven't even covered the fact that in other situations, the person doing the distracting could be ND too (lots of people with ADHD feeling this in the comments) so how would that play out according to your logic? Does the person who can't work with the sound have to shut themselves off, or the person who can't work WITHOUT the sound?
And certainly not the least problematic implication is that the ND kid shouldn't LEARN because they're different. They can't just wear noise cancelling headphones all day every day in class, especially not to compensate for a neurotypical kid who's ignorant of other people's needs. You teach the kid about consideration for others, you provide some resources for the ND child but you don't cut off the ND kid in favour of the NT kid being selfish and disruptive. It's actually against the law to stop a child having the option to actively participate in class because of a learning difference. And I sincerely doubt you would approve of a teacher allowing one student to be noisy and disruptive to the whole class in general, so why are you so keen to let this kid continue that behaviour when there is at least one other child who's not just annoyed and distracted and unable to work well, but genuinely distressed and suffering? You have a natural bias towards whom you consider to be "normal" and you clearly think that those people shouldn't have to adjust their behaviour for anyone, even though they have easier lives than people who aren't generally considered "normal" by people like you.
Sarah, I know you were trying to problem solve this situation but your intense ignorance about neurodiversity, classroom dynamics, teaching techniques and just general manners and consideration for others got you out at a discriminative, crappy, cruel answer.
      Garbage response, try again.

Although sounds don’t usually affect my overloads, crowds and loud places that I can’t escape are too much. I don’t scream or have a breakdown like other autistic people, but I sit in a silent panic, usually covering my ears and clenching my lips to try and even out the noise with pain. It sounds morbid but it’s what I’ve actually done. This video was accurately represented, but just remember that this and my own situation isn’t the case for all autistic kids. It’s a spectrum disorder and varies with every case. Great video, though!
