Have done church security over 20 yrs. Radios are one of our main source of preventing issues before they happen. Not once did I ever have to draw my weapon. We train and train, even have SWAT come in and teach us proper procedures. One item that I thought was really helpful, was our local PD issued a statement in writing that we had the right to search backpacks, large carry bags and long trench coats. It's all about team work, and discipline. TY, God bless

So, I'm thankful we have a Sr Pastor who has allowed us to get quality radios. There's no reason why a team shouldn't have radios. We've never had interference with our sound system. Funny story just last week at the altar call I was on one side of the platform and our girl that was upstairs watching the cameras radioed down to me and let me know there was a guy on the other side waiting for prayer, went over to him and he gave his life to the Lord. No one but the people who had radios knew she talked to me. Joe, maybe it's time to put together a video on the benefits of radios to help educate some people.

Well, it's better than nothing but EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION is a 2-way thing.
Pastors with reservations especially concerning interference can consult professionals who can select radios and programme frequecies that will not interfere with P.A. systems.😊😊😊

Our church had active shooter training rhis spring. Communication is key. Bought more radios, every security member and usher who might wear a radio was given their own ear piece. Also an staff pastor is radioed. Information desk and different locations around the facility,(nursery, children's church entrance).

We use Motorola radios that are licensed by the FCC. They are able to reach more than a mile so we can communicate with parking patrol. Ushers/greeters don't carry (which they should). We use silicone in-the-ear earpieces, though these are not particularly satisfactory. I switched to a Surefire EP-7 hearing protection piece. It has a foam tip and a core that you can remove and replace with the barbed end of the hollow coiled tube connected to the external speaker. Combined with a Walker's Silencer Ear Protector for the opposite ear to reduce the volume of sounds in the sanctuary, you still hear conversations but hear any communications without interference. I use these same hearing protectors at the gun range.

Not sure what the difference would be as that system still has a transmitter that has to be able to send a signal to all the receivers. I think it imperative the team be able to communicate back simple "affirmative", "negatory" and\or other information to the rest of the team.
GMRS, MURS or other business frequencies shouldn't be interfering with the frequencies of a wireless sound system, much less wired mics, which are shielded. I knew the lead of church security in the largest church in South Florida and they had no issues with two way radios at the main church campus.

I’m close to quitting as security supervisor at my church because the staff wants to let a staff member dictate what we do and when and he’s clueless

Unfortunately you are not alone. There are a lot of folks I hear about where the teams are run by someone who knows nothing about security concepts. Pray for them and try to educate them, little by little.....that is about all we can do sometimes.

Our admin is the oversight for every ministry except for security team, head pastor is our oversight. This is how it's been at our church since before we started going there and it's a fortunate thing since now my wife is the admin and I am the head of security... 😎

Joe, it concerns me that ppl who are not informed makes directives that make the job of security more difficult. Almost every police officer I’m aware of uses the secret service ear mic.

Yes it is unfortunate.....at least they have some form of security if they are having this issue so that is a step in the right direction! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Have you considered a mesh network such as bear tooth?

I have not. Do you have any experience with it?

@@ChurchSecurityAnswers no, but I'm researching mesh networks for local use. Beartooth seems to be the industry leader. An android phone can be used to make all comms per person. E2E encryption with frequency modulation. Can also be used with ATAK.

In my opinion one way comms are useless. Fortunately, our church supports radio use. All security, safety, medical, guest services, and maintenance volunteers and staff as well as Sunday school teachers are equipped with high quality radios for all services.
