Torpedo Man 1st class retired. In April 1973 I attended a class that included depth charges. There was one real reason that a ship captain might want Mark 6 depth charges. Because Mk6 sank slower they would be slightly safer for the ship at shallow depths. At 50 and 75 feet the ship needed to be going at flank speed to be safe from their own depth charges when the charges were dropped off the stern. At speeds above about 12-15 knots (13-16 mph) sonar started to degrade and it takes time to get up to speed and back down. The time slowing down wasn’t so much of a problem because the explosions messed with sonar for a measurable period of time, however the sub captain could use the time the ship was speeding up and was deaf to dodge.
I'd imagine mixing the mark 6 with the mark 9 also created a diversion in the explosions so if the 9's dropped past the sub the 6's could hit it or the 9's could explode below it and the 6's above.
@@sheilaolfieway1885 the fuse mechanism is water pressure activated so your assumption doesn’t work. Both will explode at the same depth. What would happen in a mix would be that the time from dropping to the explosion would be staggered unless all would go at the same time by sympathetic detonation.
I could not find production numbers for the Mark 9, but they were introduced by 1943 so there was probably a lot of Mark 6 in inventory. But the mark 9 were definitely more useful as they could reach greater depths more quickly. There's an excellent article on the subject here: www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WAMUS_ASW.php
@777Dubliner I would assume the Mark 6 would have been faster and easier to manufacture as well. Seeing how it looks like a barrel compared to the Mark 9 with it's fins and curves. The US Navy might have needed quantity vs quality at the time where submarines were the primary tools of the enemy navy.
I assume that the mk6 is much more easy to manufacture, the tear drop shape require special designed machine to manufacture while the barrel shape allows it to be manufacture easier and may not need customized machinery.
A US Navy warship encountered a Kreigsmarine U-boat on the surface in the Gulf of Mexico and began a depth charge attack as the U-boat crash dived. A Mark 6 depth change landed on the open deck of U-boat and simply rode it down to the preset detonation depth.

i might be the last guy to fire a Mk 6 using a K gun. Late '67 my ship was being scrapped and one remained and the Navy didn't want it (we were Coast Guard) so the Capt. gave his newly minted gunnery officer the honors. the engineer said he didn't know what held the deck up under the wood. OK, depth set at 300', pulled the lanyard, we were going flank speed (19 knots) bang, the k gun worked and some seconds later a really big splash astern, lotta dead fish. No damage to the ship.
Imagine being in a submarine and feel the shock of depth charges exploding close to you. Considering the fact that the sinking of a submarine means certain death for the crew, it must be really horrifying.
Honestly of all the jobs in the navy during ww2, submarinerers has to be the most terrifying, hundreds of feet under water while explosions threaten to send you to the bottom of the ocean, no chance of escape or rescue.
In the deep ocean? I'd have to say none, as they would reach crush-depth before reaching bottom. in shallow water, there is a chance of the firing depth-gauge failing to operate, allowing it to reach bottom. The type 6 would, due to shape and materials used, deform and deteriorate more quickly than the type 9.
@@barneymm2204 Thanks for the reply. I remember learning about ASROC's in Boot Camp but nothing about depth charges. I was an AME so not in my lane. Depth charges seemed effective in WW2, at least in the movies.
Nope just Anti Submarine Torpedos and Anti Submarine Rockets. But depth charges are still a thing. They are incredibly rare today, but the do still exist in some navies to hunt submarines in coastal waters, when the waters are just too shallow for torpedos or to just scare a sub away. Mk.11 Mod 3 is the type of depth charges that does still exist today.

Also, while underway, a US Naval Vessel DOES NOT fly the Union Jack from the staff located at the bow.

energy from the explosion is transferred through the water, the sudden explosion and implosion will cause the hull of the sub to warp, enough structure instability would cause hull implosion due to difference in pressure. just like a tin can get crushed by a hand
