  • Ajax no 2 (104 pound ram) Industrial built spring hammer or better known as a Federhammer in Europe. this machine was just the helve and frame, built new Jackshaft system so machine runs at 250bpm. new belts, built the treadle and brake system. Also due to massive wear on cast iron dovetails I built a Bolster plate to sit on top and bolted it to the base, drilled and tapped bolts for the lower die to mount. Runs great and can hit very hard or just touch the steel.

    Hi Brad,
Looks great. I'm in Toronto building a similar mechanical hammer from scratch (75lb ram). Would love to correspond. You can see some photos and videos here: instagram.com/powerhammerbuild/
Had some questions about your drive system. Did you machine a crown on your flat belt pulleys? Where did you source your flat belt, and how is the seam joined? My current belt is joined with an alligator clip. I'd like to get a seamless (scarfed and glued) belt but no idea where to source it.

Hi there, happy to correspond, I got
The flat belt made by a company called Old Country Leather they were a very good price compared to everyone else and they did an excellent job scarfing and gluing leather belt I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have I did not Crown the police because with the rim on each side it retains the belt with no issues crowning the top Jack shaft pulley could help it track better but so far I've never had any issues with wear my pully where the pulley drives. The leather drive belt on my hammer actually has two seems when running the hammered you cannot tell that there are two seams and as they have the hammer belt broke in and got more and more flexible so leather belts will tend to stretch and you may need to make an idler pulley to take up some of the slack.
