I bought an original Hissatsu to go with my VBSS kit many moons ago, but never ended up carrying it on a boarding. I had a gun after all, and a whole team of people who also had guns, so I figured the odds of my having to stab someone were too low to justify having to haul yet another thing up the caving ladder we used. I probably would have carried the folding version, but it wasn't out yet. I also bought a Hisshou when they came out, but more because it looked like a fun thing to have (and it is!) than any intention of taking it downrange. I can't speak for everyone's military experience, but I can confirm that in twelve years of active duty and three deployments to combat zones, dismembering someone with a short sword never once occurred to me as a possible solution to a problem. I like James Williams's stuff though. I don't think I was ever particularly "tactical," and I get less so with every passing year, but I've been fond of a good knife since my Boy Scout days and one of the folders he made with LionSteel joined my collection about two years ago.
Great change up into some of the funner blade products. I vote for more Pete, more of the Cold Steel style two handed gladiator, backyard warrior stuff, walking sticks with swords in them. That would be fun.
Back in the day I carried a 9" Western Bowie in Yemen. The Yemeni loved it, many carried a Jambiya. Good times. No I never used to cut any human limbs. I'll bet it could make a pretty deep gash, and a great camp knife.
I have the fixed blade version of the CRKT Hissatsu. Surprisingly good fit and finish from CRKT at the time. I always wanted to get the Hisshou but could never justify the expense when a Cold Steel Kukri machete would do a similar job for under $20.
The only blade I paid more than retail for on the second hand market. Thankfully not much more. No regrets on that, as nowadays they go for like $750 on ebay. Glad I got mine when I did. She's a beast of a cutter. Just need to have a proper saya made for her.
I own the Hissatsu, which is like the Hisshou's little brother, fixed bladed. I carry it daily as a defensive option. It's quite a blade, but takes some creativity for proper concealment. Regarding the Hisshou being issued to soldiers and general large blades and bladed weapons being used in combat zones, there's some small bit of controversy. Of course a lot of people would say that you'd never use a knife/sword/weapon like that in this day and age, a gun would always be a better option. But, there are some precedents specifically in breach and clear situations, where you're going room-to-room in an interior building. As some people in the armed forces or police agencies can attest, this is probably one of the most dangerous situations you may find yourself in, as you just have a lot of blind corners where people could easily take advantage. So, having a sidearm or even a knife to fend off someone going for your weapon is actually kind of viable. I remember a story making the rounds of a soldier that swore by a Tomahawk that he would keep with him on deployment, apparently it had saved his life. So carrying a short sword like this to "de-limb" an enemy combatant as they grab hold of your rifle, it doesn't seem too far-fetched.
Wowzers!!! I was planning on making my own short sword out of 1095 I didn't know how it would turn out finished but that sword gives me some idea of what's possible wow what a beautiful piece I don't know about hacking off limbs it would definitely cause more than a flesh wound.....
