I hate how (ahem) streaming media blocks or removes educational uploads such as this one because they simply cannot tell the difference between a sport and a crime. You can see ALL KINDS of worthless and offensive BS on here and thats all gravy, but God-forbid someone shows how to work a tool. Im glad you reposted this, I hope someday our country wakes up and cheers from Florida! Subscribed. F**K the algorithm!!
This was very helpful for me. Even while in the military, I always used iron sights on a long gun. Once I got out, my main focus was handguns. By the time I started getting interested in using optics, I felt a little embarrassed about my lack of knowledge. I also suck at math; so when folks start talking about mils and MOA, my eyes glazed over. Thank you, for dumbing it down for people like me.
I hunted for 6 years ( the lenght of my carier) with a fixed 4x 24. 50ies copy of a ww2 german scope, which was their copy of the soviet PU. Military build, rugged, shitty as shitty gets performance in anyounes book. Did the job without fail. So.
Thanks, I'm another glazed over mathematician. damn, keep it simple . If you want my money KEEP IT SIMPLE!! The only thing that I learned that helped me all my life was the times tables up to 12x12. And I learned that in the 4th grade. The rest of the 10 years was a skid stain on my underwear!
I also hunted as a kid with iron sights and qualified sharp shooter in the military during the Nam era, it's only been in the last 5yrs I ever used a scope and that's only because that's how I purchased the rifle and no iron sights was on it. But all in all I'm old school and still like iron
I have to say Joe that you are the man. As an Englishman in the UK I found your explanation of scopes perfect. Also I think your accent and delivery a charm. Keep it up man.
Came by this channel looking to learn about rifle scopes because my first experience with a scope I was with a buddy and his dad but didn't get any points across, made it seem easier than it was. so looking down a scope I was confident it was all lined up but when I pulled the trigger there was nothing on the other side of my scope. It was absolutely terrifying for me to lose a round I fired in all honestly. regardless of being on a private range I never picked a rifle scope back up in the event I lose the round again.... It sounds silly but until i saw this video I now know it was the parallax that was fucking with me. I greatly appreciate this video. Honestly... and your accent hits real close to home, love it!
This is a timely video, Joe. I own a pile of scopes and most have become paperweights. Looking forward to learning the meat and potatoes of scopes so I can save money and just buy the correct one the first time. - Mike in CA.
New to long range shooting and enjoying it very much….just learning about scopes and appreciate you breaking it down to basic levels….nice job and thank you sir
Thanks i got all I needed to know. When I was into photography it cost me a lot to find out that it's all about the glass. In the camera and in the enlarger. Cheap glass, cheap fuzzy image!! Simple. Pay for what you get!
Great to hear someone speak naturally from the heart and not be concerned with artificial political correctness. An excellent primer on scopes sans the typical garbage all too often seen in present times: thanks for the work and video!
Remember when this was first up, I always had problems with parallax and I finally understood, I don’t know how this was offensive.... anyway thanks Joe for putting it back up!
Well, I appreciated the video. Not only informative, but entertaining. I'm not gonna reveal my age, but been hunting for many years. I typically used my shotgun, so no scope training needed. I've recently purchased an AR15 and need to brush up and educate myself. Thank you again for your training and advise.
Out on range today and helped a guy sight in at 25 meters. I determined his 100 meter grouping would be about 3.5 inches high but it was more like 11 minutes high and just about 4 minutes wide. The culprit was parallax and no means to correct or make hold consistent. I suggested to the shooter that he drill an aperture hole in his lens cover but for sure don’t buy a scope that can’t be adjusted for parallax. It can ruin your day.
Hey Joe, thanks. You provide a comprehensive verbal and visual of parallax, but would you please peel this onion once more and explain the "plane". We know it's not an aircraft or huge field in Kansas, but to know what it is and the difference visually and verbally between a 1st and 2nd focal plane would help. Thanks.
Thanks Joe...I've always shot using the irons. Been on the fence about getting a scope, being on a fixed income I want make the right purchase the first time. Thanks again...keep up the great work.
Looking to add a decent scope to my AR build. About the only thing I know about scopes is how to spell it. Thanks for the video. Its starting to make sense . Gonna watch some more now
I have a Burris 3x9 scope on my Thompson Contender 223 with a 16 inch barrel that worked superbly. I did not shoot the weapon for 20 years and stored it in my Gun safe and never touched. When I removed the weapon, and sighted through the scope, all I see is a very small image, something like looking through the wrong end of a pair of Binoculars. No external adjustment affects the image at all. I am perplexed as none of my other scopes have ever done this. I am ex-Military and have owned a legal FFL gun store many years ago. I would appreciate you ideas. I really enjoy your videos! Thanks, Sam
I use a illuminated radical because my eyesight is not as good as it used to be and it seems like the illumination helps me see the radical a lot better
Thankyou very much for explaining all that. You are a good comunicator and funny. I've put an ar scope on my air rifle. Now I should know what all those dials are for. Look out rabbits I'm gunning for you.
Great video, very informative and straight to the point. I actually took notes as this is my first rife and my first scope. This will definitely help me pick out the right scope for me.
Havent found a true beginners learning program. Always one or two points are assumed leaving me with questions. This was a good summation Just need more practical detail that can be understood by dummies like me
You are great! I went to shoot with a new scope. I could hardly see anything clearly. Yet when I saw and shot it was always on the bulls eye wow! That means the scope was properly zeroed. But I am having seeing through the scope. Is it the ocular problem or what I do not know. I want to see the target clearly every time. Where am I going wrong please?
I got my Tasco 4x32 from a YT giveaway once. It's only sitting now on a PCP airgun - but oh do I like it. Turrets do have caps - but they are still finger adjusted. No screwdrivers nor other tools. And it's a basic duplex crosshair - which I love. I surely like to use it even though I have lately wanting to go up from 4x to 3-9 or the likes.. But Cyclops did already help me lately deciding my next scope.. This channel has damn good videos of scopes!
Hi Joe liked your videos. I’m a new member here my name is John pleasure. I’m reaching out because I just purchased a Leshy 2 and I am lost in the scope world!! I just love it, no one can do videos like this man, straight talking and pure entertainment!!!
I agree, he makes it easy to understand.
Probably the best explanation of parallax ever.
Thank You

I know what you mean. I was in the military and they taught none of this stuff. Ive decided its past due time to learn.
It would make sense mainly dm's, and b4 qualified soldiers would need this kind of info

Happy to help!
5 star video
Fantastic explanations. Straight to the point, no nonsense
I have to say Joe that you are the man. As an Englishman in the UK I found your explanation of scopes perfect. Also I think your accent and delivery a charm. Keep it up man.
I HAVE WATCHED SEVERAL OF YOUR VIDEOS AND THEY ARE ALL EXPLAINED IN A EASY TO UNDERSTAND WAY
Easy to install, looks great, optics are clear and brite. Bought a second for my other riffle.
Make sure when you marry that scope to the rifle, like any marriage, it will last with expensive rings. Scope tubes are fragile. Do Not over torque.

It was nice to have a refresher course. I wish I had the ability to explain things the way you do.

Thank you sir, I appreciate your explanation. I understood you better than these other videos .thank you again.great explanation..
Luv that he's well informed. Just this one video alone gives so much information on types of scopes.
Thanks for that
Love your holds no punches straight forward approach!!!
good job old man! the world has needed this for a VERY long time❣️❣️
As a newcomer to hunting this is an excellent video covering all my basic questions about what everything means. Thank you!
Thanks for that
Watched a lot off different videos on Rifles and Scopes but think I found my go to to guy for learning! Thanks
Thanks i got all I needed to know. When I was into photography it cost me a lot to find out that it's all about the glass. In the camera and in the enlarger. Cheap glass, cheap fuzzy image!! Simple. Pay for what you get!
I appreciate this video very much. I knew next to nothing about scopes and now I feel confident to go pick out my first one. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Optics, liquor and hookers huh? Your dad is a f-ing wisdom legend.
Without a doubt !!
Jesus. I had to rewind it to ensure I heard it right. He is a real Man, Genius! Now, I regret thinking about the past. God.
Class quote that, love it

Very helpful video for a new rifle, and scope owner 😅

Love the explanations , I agree on the illumination part, and it gave me a good laugh at the end.

This man has a unique talent for instructional videos. Well done.
Thank You for that
Thank you for a very simple explanation for a first time scope buyer!
Thanks for the info. We aren't all ex military and there's not a lot of folks that talk to noobs with much enthusiasm or second thoughts.
Again thanks
You are more than welcome to

Thank you for this. I'm new to rifle shooting/scopes, and yours is the only educational video I've found useful as a beginner. Subscribed!
I’ve had turrets move on a beater gun ! It was bounced around from truck to tractor to 3 wheeler , one easy shot miss that scope was replaced.
Excellent video, I just purchased my first rifle, and now it time to find a good scope. Thanks for the tips
Glad it helped some

Great video Bubba, I have a 3x9 thats set up for target practice. If one removes a scope, do you have to bore sight it if you return it?
This is just what I needed thank you!
Building my 1st AR and looking for a good scope. This info your sharing is worth it weight in gold. Thanks for sharing.
