I'm just glad we're all coming into agreement that opening cards is, in fact, gambling. Good video!

We've been in agreement about this for a long while, no? They list odds on the pack. You're gambling. You hedge your bets buying hobbies or jumbos. You hedge your bet buying bulk. But at the end of the day, bet away.

    • @markymichaels

It’s always been gambling. But, atleast ya have some value even if ya “lose” rather than nothing if ya scratch a ticket or gamble on a sports game. Even base cards are “worth something”

Not gambling at all. I don't open them for value I do it for fun. It doesn't matter to me what I get or how much money I make. It's fun for me.

I don't buy a lotto ticket to make a living. I throw 2 bucks at it to have a nice dream of what I'd do with that money when it gets obscene. Doesn't change anything about the lotto.@@juansullivan9366

I owned a card shop up until a few months back(closed for family reasons) the issue is most people that came in to buy boxes to rip were just gambling, didn't PC anything and didn't want to sell on eBay, or card shows,Facebook etc. but they would want to sell me the cards back and expected the prices they seen on eBay,most would just end up piling up the cards at home until it was overwhelming and their wife is yelling at them. I told a few guys that were doing this, if you're just in it for the gambling aspect just buy scratchers, then if you win something it's a lot easier to cash out without all the extra cards lying around.

I think the main issue with me is what you noted about the effort to getting the value back out. With scratchers it's cut and dry. Even with your card values you have to take into account the ebay/sales fees, the cost associated with the time to list/cost to ship/etc, and the taxes at the end of the year depending on how much you sale. All of that eats into the perceived "value" at the end of the day.

Interesting video, thanks for doing this! One thing I've discovered this year after opening more full cases is there is a lot of value just bundling up base cards (both complete sets and random bulk). There are a lot of set collectors that scour eBay looking for cheaper ways to complete sets. I was stunned with how much my Bob Ross bulk went for.

    • @Ballcarder

The down the road value has worked out for me as well. Went back through my old card boxes and pulled out some Brady rookies that back then I thought were just commons. Then the players that make into the HOF. You pull those second and third year cards out and there’s some nice value there. Sure the ceiling is higher on a lottery ticket, however the odds are much much worse than hitting a ceiling card for baseball. Nice comparison. Enjoyment level is much higher opening baseball cards. The value with cards includes work, so many will opt for lottery tickets despite the odds are really designed against you. On the flip side, cards fluctuate in value quickly. And a $50 card today could triple in a few months. I prefer cards, but will buy a powerball once in a while.

I think this is a fascinating question. I don’t do any type of lottery but based off this video it was a lost on the lottery but it is guaranteed money even at a lost. We all love baseball cards and want to justify its financial side of it but we all know it’s a loss type hobby unless we really know what we’re doing. But with this video those baseball cards predictions besides the buybacks aren’t guaranteed at all. Those lots and single smaller cards aren’t a guarantee. I pulled a Ken Griffey The Kid card in update two months back. I’ve had it in my eBay store for 51 raw all this time. I just sold it at a 25 percent off deal. You just never know.

Thanks Stryker for a great side-by-side comparison of the two. I much prefer baseball cards, because they are much more collectable, and hold their value past the expiration date of lotto tickets (unused/expired redemptions excluded). Also, it's way more fun to me to look at my PC collection of my favorite players and even boxes of base than to throw out used lottery tickets.

Well...i've never gotten to see a lottery ticket play an MLB game like last year when I was 8 rows up on the third base side at Dodger Stadium and saw Aaron Judge pound a line-drive home run that never got more than 30 feet off the ground. Most amazing goddamn thing I've ever seen, just pure power...and every time I see a Judge card I think about that. So cards 100%.

That is the primary point right there, I collect cards because I love baseball, I'm proud of the PC I have built the past couple years and would never sell a good many in it. If you are in it to be a merchant only then I do feel sorry for those that choose that. Baseball is so far above the other major team sports when comes to the romanticism of the game. The experiences and feelings that you have at the ballpark can not be rivaled on a football field or basketball court. Baseball is personal, our heroes look like us, act like us and the real ones still play the game and appreciate it like we did. Sorry to ramble but I get juiced when I read somebody has an experience at the ballpark.

You're welcome to watch the videos of hobby box breaks, search the price comps of every single card, put them in a spreadsheet, add them up, average them out across a 10-box sample size (30 boxes total ~5000 cards), and report your findings back to us. I've done many scratch ticket books and you're guaranteed 50% value back. Usually you get 50-70% back. With card boxes you usually get less than half value back unless you hit a monster like that $100 card you got. You can estimate the "value" of cards but someone has to be willing to pay that for them wheras scratch tickets are easy cash.

I agree with a few posts I’ve read, that while the cards have a perceived value while the lottery tickets have an actual value. Easily redeemed. What’s your time worth? Post them, package them, send them. Not to mention cost and fees associated. Lottery tickets, just go down to the store and get your money.
That being said…. Lottery tickets are not fun. Opening packs of cards (in my opinion) is fun. 😁

Ive been thinking of doing this exact video for about a year now and it's awesome to see you do it. So I believe in this scenario the scratchers win. When you take into account time and effort, the scratchers were a no brainier win. But that said, you did Chrome 23 blasters. IMO the worst baseball product for the price even with buy backs as the odds are so terrible in those. I'm shocked you didn't even get 1 auto. Had you done 2 hobby boxes, I feel like the cards may be the better option.
If you do this again, I'd do a $500 challenge. $500 in random scratchers and $500 in a curated mixer of cards.
Fun video for sure. Hope the Shohei grades out for you. That was a sweet pull.
Also, Walker seems to be hotter than Corbin in actual sales prices that I've seen. Why? No idea, but Walker has sold well for me compared to Corbin. More views, more sales and equal value. I assume it's a Cardinals bump.

I liken opening packs to sports betting because I have a topical interest in baseball. Opening packs is gambling and I treat it as such. I consider any money spent on gambling as money spent for entertainment purposes only. The only thing I gained, even if I "win", was entertainment because in the long run you always will lose money. Gambling companies wouldn't be in business if that were not the case. The argument "well at least with ripping packs you can add to your collection" is a red herring because you can buy singles for your collection for much less money. - WW

Another thing you need to consider when selling cards is that on top of the high ebay fees, you also need to pay taxes on the sale. So take an abbitional 22% off any cards you sell on ebay. you will get a tax form directly from ebay if you sell over $600 in a year. Your net is usually about 60% of what you sell the card for.
If you do local flea market you can make out better but you are "legally" supposed to pay taxes on those sales too.

This was great but I don’t think the average person can recoup the money from selling cards like you can. A lot of folks don’t know how to grade. Aren’t there eBay seller fees too? My guess is the average person couldn’t get half of your estimate for cards, so unless they are doing it for PC there is no reason to gamble on cards. Or lotto for that matter. At least Vegas odds will give you 49% for black jack

Enjoy this comparison video between scratch offs and card box openings! For me its a no brainer cards have a much better fun factor and from my experiences ive done way better on ripping a box of cards for ROI than scratch offs. Happy New Year Stryker!

This is a comparison I think about sometimes when I’m at a convenience store. I barely ever play scratch tickets fwiw. Interestingly, my best hit from both baseball cards and scratch tickets is right around $150. However, some of my favorite cards aren’t necessarily worth big money but it’s a player I enjoy collecting, so in addition to the potential monetary vale of cards, it sometimes yields something of enjoyment that scratch tickets (or any other kind of gambling, really) doesn’t provide.

Litter ticket are like gold... Wen u win it holds its value... Not to mention its slot smaller investment for a possible bigger return... Cards have value but u don't always get what u think or what its actually worth... N its a bigger investment for a bigger return... Not to take away from cards once in a while u can hit a nice one...

That was interesting. Definitely the baseball for the fun factor. The editing was good and it kept things moving. The pace and commentary kept me engaged throughout. Personally, the scratch offs were as tedious to watch as they probably were to open. It was cool to see the comparison tho. Happy new years!👊

    • @AnotherHollisBuild
      @AnotherHollisBuild 7 місяців тому +1

@@StrykerBreaks so I thought about it a bit and I think something you could do to make the scratch offs more fun to watch would be to only show winning scratches. It would lessen the amount of scratching the audience would have to watch and get straight to the good part. Don’t show any losing scratches, only a winning scratch makes the cut. You could scratch em all and I bet you could do a recap with only winning scratches in less than a minute or two. It would still get the point across and make the video move quicker in the beginning. I don’t wanna see you scratch, I just wanna see what you made total.
And next time…hit the 500K! That would do it right off the bat!🤘🤩🤘

On lotto tickets, if you get tired of scratching, you can just scratch off the code and scan it in the lottery app (I'm in Ohio, I assume Michigan has an app also) and it tells you if its a winner and how much. You can also redeem them for points if it's a loser. Thanks for the video though, I always joke with the wife and kids that buying boxes of cards are like playing the lottery, haha.

  • @buckeyebreaks

That was kind of eye opening, and my eBay store sells around $2200-$1800 a month and I was a bit surprised at the total value of the cards. Especially since, honestly that might have been the worst run of blasters I've seen for this product. Putting it in the context you did it's a little similar both ways. With boxes you never got that big hit however $80 of buybacks bumped that total. Same can be said for the lottery Tix, you never got that big hit, like $500 or even $100. Really enjoyed this video and look forward to more of the same. Thanks brother.

Card collecting is 100% gambling just more wholesome. I spend time with my kids opening cards organizing them and we have some great fun doing it that are lasting memories. If I get lucky and hit something huge awesome but at the end of the day there is a different fun factor you are left with after opening cards

The lottery tickets win in this instance. It takes way too mich tome and effort to extract the $ from the cards. And the redemption credit isn't cash either.

If you are looking for an immediate turn around, the scratch-offs win in this scenario. There are a NUMBER of factors that go into sports cards. Grading being the big denominator. If the card comes back a PSA 9 you take a huge hit. There's also the time it takes to list cards, wait for a sell/auction to close, etc. I see the long-term upside in cards, but again, it's not without a little elbow grease. Honestly I would say with the pros and cons, this is more of a tie than anything.

Great video! Super interesting content.. from an ROI perspective the main difference is lottos are one and done while card values can fluctuate overtime, especially if you get a rookie who later booms in the sport. There are two issues with this as a long term investment strategy - market volatility due to real life performance or otherwise (see Wander) and over saturation (meaning your base cards, as an asset, will have a value cap).
Long-term, it’s probably wiser to invest in the GOATs and/or gamble on specific rookies and just rip for fun/with house money if you can. Otherwise, it’s pretty similar to lotto tickets.
