"Somebody waving their bum at you and shouting Waaaaahh! *That's not enough for me!*" I can only imagine Mr. Kermode's deviant preferences between the sheets.
I really respect Mark Kermode because he clearly knows film and he doesn't go for cheap shots. He acknowledges that a certain film may not be his film, and he tries really hard to be objective, even when he acknowledges that the particular film he's viewing is not really to his taste he tries to view it through the lens of someone who does like that kind of film; as such I can honestly say that I rarely disagree with him...if ever.
Cohen in Grimsby attempts to do what he did in the dictator; make a film based on and reaffirming old stereotypes (be they racial or class based), and then at the end of the film provide a two minute speech (both times delivered by Cohen) in which he attempts to retroactively make all his terrible jokes some sort of satire, or at least clever insight. It doesn't work. It's just a more elaborate way of saying "no offence" after calling your friend an arsehole.
Have to agree with Kermode. If something is just going for shock value for the sake of it to get a reaction out of me it's not going to hit my humor buttons.
Normally I don't like Sacha Baron Cohen films at all, but in complete contrast to Mark, I found 'Grimsby' to be hilarious, yes it was coarse and rude, but also very, very funny. Furthermore, the entire audience wasn't just laughing, but exploding with laughter. It was one of the best communal cinematic experiences I've had for a long time. On top of that, the action scenes were really well done too. I can only suggest that Mark leaves his academic's head at home and go and see it again with an open mind. This is a rare example of a comedy film that I would highly recommend simply because it's genuinely funny despite its base tone. 4/5.
I agree with you, andy. I found the film funny. I'm not a big Baron Cohen fan and don't care for his crude toilet humour, but there were enough other funny scenes that had me laughing consistently. As usual, Mark Strong was brilliant.
But if he didn't find it funny, then he didn't find it funny. The fact you did doesn't change that. It is so childish to demand someone 'see it again with an open mind' when the source of the humour didn't make him laugh. It's subjective. Be happy you enjoyed it and don't get shitty when someone else doesn't, particularly when they are very even-handed in explaining why.
As much as Kermode's probably right about this one I do get the sense that he looks down on slapstick and gross-out humour and we probably shouldn't be taking our cues from him on these areas. Comedy doesn't need to be making a right-on point to be funny, y'know?
the film is a experience when shown with a crowd as everybody does react at the same time ,is it a good movie no, but not the worst comedy i have ever seen
i saw ace ventura 2 as a kid in the cinema and watching it again a couple of years ago im suprised that the 90s bbfc rated the film pg back then even if the movie was cut a little bit.
"Ukrainian Ben Affleck" had me dying with laughter in the trailer before Deadpool. Aside from that I thought it looked pretty average, attempting to ride on the success of Kingsman.
Same, expect without young secret agents. It's an average movie, but that scene with the elephant orgy went WAY, WAY TOO FAR. I could handle them hiding inside an elephants vaginas, but then... it.. it... Oh my god. And that's coming from me, your mighty ogrelord.
Grimsby was hilarious, everyone in the theatre was laughing out loud at all the right places. The more cringe making the joke the louder the older women laughed! The flashback scenes with the kids was really moving as well, it was all well played. Someone wrote, "If something is just going for shock value for the sake of it to get a reaction out of me." That is his style of humour. I for one like bad taste, gross out comedy. I can see that's not for everyone, but here's my thought, every film is just out for something. They are all engineered to make you react in one way or another.
From the trailer this looks like it could be hilarious but then so did all the other SBC films and all the best stuff seemed to be stretched out from the trailer, which then messed up the comic timing anyway. Like a textbook con trick
To be honest the trailer for this film has no good jokes in it, so if they can't even squeeze some laughs from over an hour of film into the trailer then the alarm bells start ringing. It has the old "suck the poison out.... oh no it's in my willy!" type gag that was old hat in the 70s and certainly isn't any better now. Shame though, I actually like both the leads in this, especially Mark Strong.
I thought it was fine. But I had the lowest of expectations to be fair. But it was a decent. There's worse things to watch. But that elephant scene will never be erased from my mind :/
I do have a soft spot for Sasha Baron Cohen but this film looks hmm, maybe not for me. I'm not into that crude, grossout humour stuff either. Never liked Carry On.
Mark Kermode, as great as he is, otherwise has no sense of humour beside mild jokes about the bourgeoisie. Anything he thinks is funny is an insult to comedy. But he's good with horror, et al...
Robbie Collin enjoyed a classist, bigoted, slip-up film??? NO WAY...The same man who likes Dunkirk for being pro-Brexit when it clearly isn't??? I'm Northern and Nobby really isn't.
Wait for it to be released on rental / vable whatever, roll up some joints grab some chips and put your feet up, the right way to watch one of his movies.
Its really weird to me that Mark Kermode reviews films from genres he doesn't like/understand. Example, a game called Beyond Two Souls was released that received a score of 6/10 from the review site i used to use. The reviewer said that she didn't particularly enjoy that genre of game. I played it and it was an amazing game.
i respect your opinion, but i found the movie hilarious. i'm a 49 year old, and i've gotten jaded about comedy over the years, but i laughed out loud all the way thru.
The film’s well acted, well characterised & is stylish, however the film’s poorly directed, poorly written, not funny & unfocused. (38%) (2/5 stars) (mixed)
Just seen it. At just over 1hr 20 mins, it's barely a film and it's a comedy (allegedly) without any laughs. It doesn't even warrant getting offended by it. Utterly inept. Total garbage.
Man Duckly If you share his attitude you would never have gone to see the movie anyway but I DO feel that if you don't like the actors involved, prejudge the movie before even getting there, dislike that genre of movie in any case you are the wrong person to give an objective review on said movie, obviously :D
Just seen it ...and it's is very very funny can't understand Kermode at all, he seems to me to be a stuck up prudie old man, yes it is offensive and smutty and crude and childish but it's also a lot funnier than the comedies coming out of america...and by the way Mark Strong is a sport for being in it, he must have loved the script, or is a friend of sasha b c causei don't think the pay check would cover the street cred.
I think part of the problem with gross-out humor is that its very much interchangeable to the situation its in. They aren't reliant on the setting or characters so its like there isn't anything being said that couldn't be said anywhere else.
in fact one of the most hillarious comedy movies of the past decade. This was reallly funny, unlike 99% of all US so called comedies, which just aren't at all. Sacha kept the balance between Monty Python and Inspector Clouseau so well and also adds a tribute to all the regular scum people on this planet. This movie is fresh, over the top, political uncorrect and full of offensive humor and has the balls to go right over the line, which most US comedies are not capable of crossing due to the unspoken censorship in Hollywood. Overall: phantastic comedy.
Unless you grew up in a shitty Northern English town, you'll never get the humour. The film takes a satirical look at the English working class, which is hard to understand as an outsider.
Wonder why Mark even bothers to review comedy movies. If the movie has a male lead actor or is focused on audiences over the age of 12, he always has problems with it.
since Mark may I say endorsed Spectre as a good movie I can't trust that his reviews are honest. Brothers Grimsby was a good laugh but Mark can't admit it as he can't have a laugh over "toilet" jokes. Mark, be mature!
I would give anything to have seen Mark’s face throughout the elephant scene
3 years old but that would have been inifinitely funnier
"Somebody waving their bum at you and shouting Waaaaahh! *That's not enough for me!*"
I can only imagine Mr. Kermode's deviant preferences between the sheets.
No one laughed at the trailer in Leeds. But then again, no one laughs much in Leeds anyway.
I saw the excorcist at a cinema in Leeds and everyone laughed at that!
I saw the excorcist at a cinema in Leeds and everyone laughed at that!
Certainly didn't laugh at this film tbh.
Maybe the worst film I've ever seen!
I really respect Mark Kermode because he clearly knows film and he doesn't go for cheap shots. "It just felt to me like someone waving their bum at you and going *bluuughh* "
I confess I giggled at that.

Thats really good mate
+RudeasHECK very true a lot of comedies try to do that now a days
Toad Lash
This is going since the 80s really, at least in America.
I can't imagine Mark laughing.
Kermode or strong
+Samuel Ward good point
Is part of his charm
He sort of lifts his left dimple when I've seen him laugh lightly.
Mark himself is proper funny
"Ah, ze toilet; for us, a mundane, functional item! For you, ze basis *of an entire culture*..."
Yeah me too. Would prefer to see more in this direction from Sasha.
But if he didn't find it funny, then he didn't find it funny. The fact you did doesn't change that. "Never been north of Watford"
I laughed twice in the clip, thats two more than most of the comedies coming out of the USA.
I can't think of a single funny movie from the UK except Revolver, but the humor in that was not intentional.
+pricklyphlox withnail and I.monty python films and many more
+Mark Fudge Rick and Morty though..
+pricklyphlox alpha papa
pricklyphlox
4 lions has to be one of our best comedy films. Shaun of the dead.. There aren't loads though..
More people have seen this review than people who watched the actual movie
As much as Kermode's probably right about this one I do get the sense that he looks down on slapstick and gross-out humour and we probably shouldn't be taking our cues from him on these areas. Comedy doesn't need to be making a right-on point to be funny, y'know?
Grow up, juvenile
Samwell Tarly, bottom left, 1:49.
Is it a funny movie. Yes. Is it a good movie. Not particularly.
All you need to know.
exactly. its as expected. enjoyable.
If it were funny it were good. But watch a movie like this sober, alone and in a rather neutral mood to get proper judgement from it.
the film is a experience when shown with a crowd as everybody does react at the same time ,is it a good movie no, but not the worst comedy i have ever seen
The film itself was a okay but the elephant scene was genius. Like Ace Ventura when nature calls but push to a whole new level!
i saw ace ventura 2 as a kid in the cinema and watching it again a couple of years ago im suprised that the 90s bbfc rated the film pg back then even if the movie was cut a little bit.
The Daniel Radcliffe joke had me laughing.
MintSauce ! and Trump!
"Like someone showing you their bum and going "WUARGH!"
I'll see anything Sasha Baron puts out because of how funny Borat is
+Kevin S Why? Borat (the character) is funny, as is Ali G, and bit torrents are free.
+Bot23 Can you not be a fan of someone's work without being a sycophant?
Bot23 He didn't even say he likes it he said he's gonna see it because he likes Cohen, what's wrong with that?
+WolverinesNation92 Agree, he's a comedic genius in my opinion. :)
Kevin S why is that a hashtag fail?
Sam Tarley from Game of Thrones! Who else spotted him? (1:55)
Ali g (movie) - 6/10
Borat - 10/10
Bruno - 6/10
The Dictator - 5/10
Grimsby - 6/10
Completely agree.
I'd go Ali G movie 6/10
Borat - 10/10
Bruno 8/10
The Dictator 6/10
Grimsby 7/10.
***** I love the Alg -g character but imo, the film wasn't up to scratch. His T.V. show was much funnier.
Borat 10/10?
You gotta be kidding me
***** Im british. In fact was born in Grimsby and have family who still live there.
Mark only laughts at minions 2. This low level slapstick is below him
lol. minions is more refined
He like slapstick, he dont like gross-out, but them again who does?
"Ukrainian Ben Affleck" had me dying with laughter in the trailer before Deadpool. Aside from that I thought it looked pretty average, attempting to ride on the success of Kingsman.

@@bobbyelias9642 you too soft then
Mayo looks like he's losing the will to live
Grimsby was hilarious, everyone in the theatre was laughing out loud at all the right places. The more cringe making the joke the louder the older women laughed! This looks pretty dire and I've found some of Cohen's other stuff hilarious before
Adam Sandler Baron Cohen.
From the trailer this looks like it could be hilarious but then so did all the other SBC films and all the best stuff seemed to be stretched out from the trailer, which then messed up the comic timing anyway. Like a textbook con trick
I don't know how Kermode puts up with Mayo. Mayo never ever seems interested in anything Mark's got to say.
I bet you enjoyed the Transformers films.
Who else saw samwell tarly at 1:50
but you like Nanny Mcphee
I just realised Mark has the same headphones that I do!
Never been north of Cambridge might have worked better.
I thought it was fine. But I had the lowest of expectations to be fair. But it was a decent. There's worse things to watch. But that elephant scene will never be erased from my mind :/
and the balls scene ? XD
are we talking 'freddy got fingered'....?
The main characters were atleast able to defeat the main villain
Oh, there's Samwell Tarly.
I'm from Grimsby. SBC got the accent wayyyyyyy off.
+thething00 Yooor from Grimsbeh ?
+I say what everyone really thinks so swivel Yeah, he's doing a Yorkshire accent! Come on Sascha do your research!
Can you spell?
Yes = you don't like this film
No = you like this film
Mark, "end" or "and"... 😊
People at my screening were laughing like hyenas
all the flaws this film had are instantly erased while watching the elephant scene. Talk about a classic!
This movie was painful to watch.
Never been North of Watford. I love that despite the fact I don't know what that means.
I do have a soft spot for Sasha Baron Cohen but this film looks hmm, maybe not for me. I'm not into that crude, grossout humour stuff either. Never liked Carry On.
"But Mark Strong". Or rather in the case of this film, "Front Butt Mark Strong".

From what I've seen of this film, it looks utter cack.
Loved the movie. Sasha Baron Cohen's best work yet.
The film’s well acted, well characterised & is stylish, however the film’s poorly directed, poorly written, not funny & unfocused. (38%) (2/5 stars) (mixed)
cant believe this bloke didn't find anything in this film as funny. youre off your head mate.
Laurel and Hardy were funny but not good movies just like this type of movie.
Just seen it. At just over 1hr 20 mins, it's barely a film and it's a comedy (allegedly) without any laughs. It doesn't even warrant getting offended by it. Utterly inept. Total garbage.
Badly done, Emma.
Mark Kermode - what's with the unbearable vocal fry and the ummm-eeers?
I always thought that all the iconic figures of cinema of all areas talk in a funny way, think about it
LOL pretty obviously the wrong person to review that type of movie :D he already decided he wasn't going to like it before he even got there :)
so critics are not allowed to have personal preferences? I share his attitude, so this is useful for me.

(Ele)phantastic comedy
His Yorkshire accent is terrible!
Very funny film.
why bother talking so much about it? stop giving it free publicity.
Haha this guy loves himself a bit too much
"insufficient laughter, once again". Yup. I'd agree with that.
Mark Kermode takes time, and trouble, to explain why this movie is what it is.
Hakuna matata. :)))
Is it just me or isn't the character of Nobby Butcher incredibly dated?
:)
+Gwasgray Yeah, I got that - he may have gotten away with this 20 years ago but it just seems really old hat
:)
Came off like a shitty 70s comedy to me
Unless you grew up in a shitty Northern English town, you'll never get the humour. The film takes a satirical look at the English working class, which is hard to understand as an outsider.
the movie is hilarious go see it
Get someone else to review comedy's and action movies and mark can review the boring movies
To much Michael Bay in your life
Wonder why Mark even bothers to review comedy movies. If the movie has a male lead actor or is focused on audiences over the age of 12, he always has problems with it.

Ah, yes. You're one of them who only likes the Oscar films
i think mark is just old...
Mark is too academic ; cohen's comedy is much more than grossing out audience it has social context etc BIG picture Mark
