I work part time in a children's science center and museum. I spend my days talking to children about sharks, stingrays, dinosaurs, and other science related subjects. It is not the most high paying job but it is a lot of fun.
My wife retired in May 2022 from a high level executive position (Also insanely high stress). Later that year she started volunteering at a non profit 2 days a week. They asked her if she wanted to do a bit more so they started paying her for those two days but she was going in sane with boredom. Last year they offered her a full time job as a data analyst. She took it is back to full time with zero pressure doing what she loves best. My suggestion to anyone retiring is find a hobby or some side hustle.
Find a hobby or some side hustle is something I hear often. I like to refine it a bit to think "find something you like to do". Trouble is most people just aren't wired to find things interesting. They roll their eyes at everything. You guys worked in a challenging environment so clearly you're wired for challenges. Telling people who aren't wired that way to be like you doesn't really do them any good. For example, in my career I worked in tech startups. Most people would consider it stressful, demanding work but I loved it. 60-80 hours a week no problem. And most I worked with felt the same which is a main reason it was so much fun. But sometimes a very intelligent person would get in and just get chewed up. The were smart enough to pretend to like it and were 100% involved, but the stress chewed them up to the point of serious mental breakdown.
I think a better message to people would be to find their own path. Don't get hung up on what others say or do. If you enjoy reading the newspaper for 4 hours in the morning, go out for lunch, take a nap, play Freecell, watch TV and go to bed everyday then that's perfect for you.
I don't think there's anything wrong with capable people getting self-worth from a job or gig. But that's not for everyone.
@@MrWaterbugdesign Agree. I was never a workaholic type person. Quit my 9-5 in 2000 and self taught myself HTML and created a nutritional supplement website by hand. Made a decent living as most of my items were on the first page of any google search. Things went south when they changed their algo and by 2006 I had switched to affiliate marketing and made a killing for 5 years but that too took a dive and I just focused on hobbies, mostly playing music. For me at my age now I'm content with playing guitar, going for walks at the beach, taking care of stuff around the house etc but my wife has always found her happiness in a job. It's a win win for both of us.
The "key phrase" is "non profit"
Non profit means, 100% profit, that's why they could pay her to volunteer.
Churches, charities etc are all non profit, which means they don't pay a dime in taxes, they get tons of federal, county, city and local aid.
99% of the time,non profits are as useless as tits on a boar, as 98 to 120% of their donation's are squandered by BS admin job's and the higher ups linings their pockets.
I said 120%, yes I did, there so greedy they actually over spend more than they take in, so nothing goes to the actual "cause" as there always out of money, as they constantly beg for more n more.

I'm most fortunate, I'm 73 and the specialized construction equipment I operate allows me to continue working. The plus plus for this job is........the contractor pays me $80 an hour, with between 30 and 40 hours each week. They also pay my housing, utilites, $900 a month for my personal vehicle and last but not least......it's in Hawaii. I've been here a year this far, with what looks to be another five or six months. 6 is one I'm going to try. The city I'm retiring to has a wwii museum and a wwii landing craft. Either one would be fine.
I met a guy who babysat oil and gas pipeline crossings. He will get out of his truck every 30 minutes or so and look at what was going on then get back in his truck. I suspect it paid pretty well since he was working for one of the major interstate pipeline companies. Seemed like a pretty good part-time gig. He said he got the job by attending a job fair, and claiming that there was nothing a 58-year-old would be hired for. The people at the job fair told him he’d be surprised and he was.
I've heard of that gig. Yes it can be well paying and if I remember right the more remote the higher the pay. Takes a person happy to be on his own, which I like.

I'm working part-time during Fall and Spring semesters for our local community college as a tutor and faculty assistant. I love it! I can set my own hours and I enjoy helping the staff and students.

This is great. What do you do as a faculty assistant? I got a masters specifically so i could do something at one of the colleges after retirement because the ed community is way more tolerant of age than the tech industry where I’ve always worked
A few years ago I met a 40 YO guy on a plane.
He would use his vacation time to organize beer tasting tours to Germany.
He did not make any money but he got a free trips.
In my case I have always owned a sailboat.
So 6 years before retirement I got my professional Captains license.
I have been teaching the 2 Captains Classes per year for the past 5 years.
When I retire in June 2024 I will have 2 fun jobs
1. Summer - 20 hours a week teaching people how to dock their boats.
2. Winter - 4 Captains Classes per year.
I will make enough to pay for my sailboat and have a nice trip or two.
I met a guy with the same beer tasting tour job. When I mentioned money to him he said $20 per day. I said that's not much, he said I know ................ but it's all I can afford !!!!!! 🤣
Does a Captain License teacher keep on average 1/2 the total tuition paid by the students? Can you give a % kept by the teacher? (since different areas will have different tuition costs) This sounds perfect for me too.
The Captains training school handles the money.

My retirement job is as cashier at a small family-owned market. I started in 2021 when employees were scarce & I was chafing from pandemic restrictions. I’ve had the privilege of helping make this business a success, making new acquaintances, and reconnecting with old friends (I work in the town I grew up in). Bonus: I have a brand-new audience with whom to share my personal stories & “pearls of wisdom”!😂
12) Also if you stay up North in the winter time you could be watching after the homes of snowbirds. Just walk the property twice a month checking the outside picking up trash or branches, clearing vents after heavy snow falls. Inside making sure the heat doesn't go off and lights are still working maybe adjust start and stop times on timers. Water house plants, feed fish, even re-adjust blinds so it looks occupied, if they have a vechicle drive it so it warms up now and then. I could see charging a flat rate of $200 to $300 for the season (more if you are bonded) and if you had 10 or 20 clients it would break up the winter blues and have a few extra dollars at the same time!
Sounds very useful and fairly desirable, for me it may not be social enough. Can you think of a more interactive version of this?
House sitting and dog sitting are huge in some areas
Can work in the reverse. My brother lives in the Phoenix area and many of the homes in his development belong to snowbirds. So he ended up watching the homes during the hot summer months.

Handyman. Light work, no climbing on roofs or other physically demanding/dangerous activity. I established relationships with a few real estate agents who wanted sellers to spiffy up homes prior to listing. I’ve done painting, plumbing, stripping wallpaper, changing electrical receptacles and fixtures and light landscaping. There’s dozens of other small things that usually need to be done. I charge by the hour plus the cost of any supplies/components.
Sounds odd, But in smaller towns with a Funeral home. A live person must be present , in the building, when the deceased is in the Funeral home, My ex mother in law took the job to spend the evening and night while there was a body in the Funeral home. Good money, a private apartment in a wing of the funeral home. If it’s not “ creepy” to you you might think about that. You might not find it “ fun” but it was a great income boost to her.
I've been doing pizza delivery and I'm having a blast! It helps if you have a have small car and deliver in the suburbs with few apartments.
Cool. In college I drove students to/from the airport. 1979 version of Uber. It was a lot of fun. Mainly just at the few days around holidays when almost every kid needed to get to the airport. I'd pack a bunch of them into my little Dodge Colt.

I retired from the Navy in 2021 as a Family Physician for awhile after.
Now trying to teach at my medical school or a minimal wage part job at a golf course. Bonus can hit all the balls I want and play golf also.

I am thinking of taking some technician training courses at the local community college and then working on classic stereo equipment from the 60's and 70's.
I fell into installing TV antennas after putting one on my own house (I've always been a radio hobbyist so I have enough knowledge of what I'd doing). With folks getting rid of cable TV and going to low-cost/free internet streaming they still want to get broadcast TV for live news and some sports, and an old-style roof-top antenna is the cost-effective way to do it. I do refuse jobs I don't feel safe on, such as steep-pitched roofs, and won't put them in/on condo buildings unless the unit owner gets a release from the HOA. Most of the jobs are local referrals from my relatives and neighbors on whose houses I installed antennas, so I don't have to drive long distances to jobs. I'm also a licensed electrician and do some small repiar jobs for folks, too. Its not a desk job but its enjoyable for me.
My wife used to run a pet sitting buisness, licensed, bonded and insured. A real legit buisness that made a good living. An yes, she did overnights an weekends, an sometimes did weeks at a time, staying at peoples house's while they were on vacay, family emergencies, or medical reasons. Paid very well but we live on the treasure coast of Fl, an people love their pets, so did we, but were dog people anyway, but some of the cats were cool to. Thx for the vid Geoff
How do you get a license for per sitting? I know there are courses to be certified through local agencies. Is that what your wife did? Thanks.
A legit buisness licence, from your county or state, but remember once you go this route, you have to pay taxes, an insurance because your legit, not a shade tree, or cash only supposed buisness.

If possible for the individual, I think this is a great “retirement plan” overall. Maybe find a “less stressful more fun job” around the age of 55 and do that job until you can’t or don’t want to anymore. I think. It beats trying to save millions to retire at 67….just my opinion.

I was a PGA club & teaching pro for 8 years in the early 2000s. If you are not at least a registered PGA apprentice with head pro approval then you will not be allowed to give lessons at a facility run by a PGA professional. A person can't just come in off the street and give lessons without drawing the ire of the club's pros.
"Leveling up" through the assistant pro ranks - from range & cart barn supervisor to full 2nd assistant - will have you focusing on pro shop retail operations & merchandising, running the tee sheet and helping set up/facilitate/clean up tournaments. The saying goes that if you want a job that allows you to freely play or teach golf ... don't be a club pro.
Canasta and MahJong … games I learned in the 1970’s from my stepmom. It looks like my pre-video-game generation is still playing cards.

Cottage food laws in some states allow home specialty baking businesses. I do custom decorated cookies. But cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, breads etc. all work. Also if you mostly work from home consider renting your vehicle on Turo.

Nice video, I really liked it. I have another one that I know a few people are doing in various RV Communities, it's an RV Park Host. Basically, they stay in their own RV in a park rent free or almost free and know and provide information to other RV'ers about the local attractions, who delivers the best pizza, where's the nearest grocery store, that type of thing. They can take a considerable load off of the park management's staff. Sometimes, they have a golf cart and will take you and your garbage down to the dumpsters (which in a bigger park, might be a rather long walk). Many times, they monitor the cleanliness of the RV Park's dog park and either let management know if there's a problem or actually scoop the doggie waste up themselves. It could give a snow bird something to do to lower his/her expenses while staying down south. They also might meet some interesting people while doing it. I've met a few people who are doing this in the last few years.
Pet sitting is not just limited to the US, you can travel and stay in a foreign country and get to know the local life for the cost of airfare.
My neighbor in this rural area is a horse and large animal sitter. She has a set client list who schedule her all over the country during their absence, her salary includes airfare for remote customers. People with expensive horses are very particular about their animals, and generally have deep pockets..
Me being the exception, my animals picked my pockets dry.

Seasonal worker in Alaska - while on a previous trip to Alaska we struck up a conversation with one of the tour bus operators. He was retired & just enjoyed driving a bus while located in the beautiful countryside of Juno Alaska & drawing a paycheck. From what I've read, seasonal workers in Alaska are quite in demand. I'm sure it may be the same in other popular tourist areas.

My original retirement plan was to retire at 62, work part-time, and save money. However, high prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.

I agree, having a portfolio-advisor for investing is genius! Not long ago amidst the pandemic crash in March 2020, I was really having investing nightmare prior touching base with a license portfolio-advisor. In a nutshell, i've accrued over $550k with the help of my advisor from an initial $120k investment thus far.
The decision on when to pick an Adviser is a very personal one. I take guidance from *Gertrude Margaret Quinto* to meet my growth goals and avoid mistakes, she's well-qualified and her page can be easily found on the net.

Such an interesting topic! In our case, we started an S Corp trading options and futures on the stock market. Not only does that allow business expense write offs, but it also is smart because it bypasses the $3,000 limit on capital losses from the IRS for a given year. No cap at all. Plus one gets to pay oneself a salary that helps secure social security additional years. There are costs but there are benefits too. And can work from their spare bedroom as long as it is for business not personal use. We love the business model and likely will never go back to being passive investors again.

@@EamonnHogan-eu3qc Yes. But far too much for this forum. Level 3 trading not investing focus. For example I have many trades on with verticals and naked call and pu options. I trade daily with weeklies and monthly. But the essence is it a business.

I hate this but as a retired executive I can fill in one day a month as a beauricrat . It’s easier than breathing. I sit at a desk and have 7 computer screens running with youtube on 2 of them. I hate this job, it’s so fun and easy I cant stop. Once a month gives me something to do.

I'd really like to work-camp during the summer months. That would be a dream come true. Imagine working at a gorgeous destination such as the Grand Canyon, meeting people from around the world and spending your days off hiking or rock hounding or just soaking up the scenery.

My Dad did that after retiring. He was a seasonal worker and did maintenance. Mostly cleaning which wasn’t particularly lovely but he was able to enjoy the park all summer.
My wife is a retired public school teacher and she tutors. Tutoring lets her interact with school age children which she loves and provides and provides extra cash.
I buy and sell 'stuff' that I find in 2nd hand shops. My specialty is precious metals (I worked as a repair jeweler for years). Lately, shops have been tossing me gold and silver (I rarely see platinum). Two weeks ago, I bought a 23 gram, 18K gold bracelet for $2 at a basement thriftshop and yesterday, I bought a 20 gram, 14K bracelet for $1. I have friends who deal in books, clothing, computer game cartridges, vintage pick-up trucks (!), smalls (things you can carry in one hand). I don't know anyone who deals in brown wood furniture though- it's a dead business where I live.
Great idea on the jewelry. Where so you resell for the best prices? My mom is a jeweler as well but she's quite disabled now at 88 years old. I think we could work together on something like that!
It’s a shame that few appreciate “brown furniture”. Solid wood is so rare in new furniture.
@@Savannah-ed4rv It depends on the item as to where I (try to) sell it. Silver, I bring to a consignment shop for 60/40 a split. Gold, I melt quite a bit because if it's damaged in the slightest (dent, kink, bad stone, anything), it's impossible to resell. I recently sold on realreal but the splits are too much and won't be sending another lot. I found a local 50/50 split shop that I'll try. What city are you in? What items do you have to sell?
Wow Canasta was around when we were also playing gin, gin rummy, and pinochle in the late 50s, 60s, and even early 70s
I’m an independent solar consultant with Upstart Energy who has been semi retired for years. I’m free to choose where, when, and how I work. I love helping homeowners go solar and it’s profitable too.
You know what I do? I get paid to cruise around, listening to the radio all day, hopping out fifteen or twenty times to get a little exercise. I DoorDash. I net close to $20/hour after vehicle expenses, and I literally can work when I want, and not work when I don't want.
I have a motorcycle and I want to try this when I retire. I hate driving cars but riding a motorcycle is pure joy to me.

One of the tax companies was advertising for a seasonal tax preparer. They offered training and weren’t asking for a degree. I had thought about it myself.
It’s what I do! If you work for HRBLOCK, you can work as little as 20hrs a week. It’s not a mindless job , but you can feel fairly confident when you start your second year. Plus you will work with great people. You could work in your snowbird location too!!

I have met several sailing instructors in the past few years that were retired something or other. Same concept as a golf pro. Figure out how to do what you enjoy while someone else pays the tab, maybe even make some extra cash.
One need not be chained to a cold-weather climate to do tax preparation. One could have clients across the country or globe.
Here in Southern California, golf pros charge $200 - $400 per hour.

Wow. It turns out my idea of "fun" isn't compatible with any of these except maybe reselling stuff on eBay. I guess I'm weird. Of course, I knew that.
It would be helpful if your videos had chapters that we can go to. That would help to pass on things that are not of interest and focus on things that do.
You can go to the transcript in the video. That can move you past anything not of interest. You can also click on the little wheel in the top right corner for the settings. You can actually speed up the video. I do it when someone talks slow.
@Dbb27 this is true, but set chapters work much easier since each chapter is not highlighted in the transcript with bold type or some other indicator.
@@keithwalters1389 unfortunately it’s not in content creators best interest to get us through their videos quickly. Doesn’t keep control of the advertising. I do like putting them on speedier time frames. I can cut them by at least a quarter.
@Dbb27 then again if there are specific chapters that interest you on a video and you want to see it again having set chapters makes it easier. In turn you're watching the video multiple times

If you were telling a friend or family member what to do in Australia their 1st time, what would you tell them to do for transportation there and between cities, what cities to go to, what sites and experiences to do, where to eat, where to stay, and anything else they would need to know. What about being a live-in dog sitter where the dog comes and lives with me in my home. Just me and the dog, no other ppl and no other dogs? Would that be something in demand by pet owners? I don’t feel like living in someone else’s house.
I think some people do that from what I've read on different websites and things here on youtube. I think you can set it up whatever way you want and as long as the client is happy with it, then you're good to go!
@@Savannah-ed4rv I may try it. After my GSD passed, I started bringing my sons GSD to my place (they didn’t get along) to watch her when needed, instead of making several (4) trips there every day. Just keeping her here with me like every day life is so much easier than having to make trips and all the reminders going off.
@@GNX157 I think it is a good idea! As a pet owner and an rv traveler I normally have my pets with me but I would love to have a backup for ER trips to my aging mother, or if I myself am ill. In my experience, it can be tricky to have someone come to my home to care for pets ... it is still odd to pets and maybe more odd than "going away". Best wishes!!!
A few years ago, a friend paid me $2000 for two weeks of cat-sitting. I chalked it up to her being overly generous because she knew I was in a bad place at the time, but my talks with pet owners since then has told me, yes, if you can build a clientele, you could live off of this. Thankfully I'm not in a bad place anymore, but if I ever come back to the States, I'll look into it just because I love animals and don't mind extra money.

Kennel rates are approximately $50 in my city and your dog runs the risk of contracting a respiratory disease. I would think a house pet sitting gig could easily be $100 a day.

However being a golf pro means you had have been very good golfer and in very good physical shape .as far as the ebay stuff you make it sound so simple but it is far from simple .I know somone who does it and took years for his wife and him to get the drill down .

My niece is both do live in pet sitting, but normally for a week or two at a time at the most. I don't think their clients are necessarily High worth but they're willing to pay a couple hundred dollars a week.
I have 5 dogs, not overly spoiled “fur babies” like some, but they are beloved pets and more importantly, expensive hunting dogs. Kennel costs are $50 per dog per day so a 10-day vacay adds up to A LOT and they are mixed in with other dogs for “play time” and you sign a release that the place is not responsible if something happens, not to mention disease factor like kennel cough. Yeah I can pay someone to come live at my house for 10 days for a lot less than $2500.

My nieces both do pet sitting and they got their clients through word of mouth, beginning with a couple of their neighbors. They've never worked for Rover or any other agency.
