I miss a reference to Paulo Freire and his pedagogy of the oppressed. He pioneered the idea that it is not enough to tell people what to do or abstractly educate people in skills, knowledge and concepts which they cannot connect to their lives and needs and may actually just help the ruling class in integrating the oppressed in a better way into an oppressive system. In his theory it is important to first get to know the subjects you want to educate and their needs. Then you can devise the content of a course in a way which is emancipating to the participants of the course. Concretely he set up literacy programs in the early 60s in Brazil. Obviously the content was oriented towards getting adults to be able to read, write and do basic arithmetic. But the content was adjusted so that the words participants had to spell and write would connect to their daily lives. Or arithmetic was practiced in a bartering context, because that is what the participants really needed: calculations that ensured that they would not be screwed by merchants. Of course these concepts of emancipating education need adaption to the context in which they should help to liberate people. And education needs at least as much willing activity of the participant as from the moderator of a course. It may even need the moderator to "derail her course" and let it go in a completely different direction as was originally planed to pick up on the needs and desires of the participants - it's a rather demanding concept of education. In my opinion, Paulo Freire's ideas are, however, highly relevant today.
We don't need to be told what to do to change things. We need ideas that suggest options to meet the goals we want change to achieve so we can develop a plan we believe will work! A road map to begin that thru trial and error we can detour to a better path when it is present!!! Just a competent starting point!!!
It is not a lot to ask for. But it is not like there have not been many many starting points tried in the past. From decades before Marx wrote and which he wrote about. Generally scathingly, since he thought he knew best. People were trying to find a better way to manage their lives and work at the same time as the world was being industrialized and capitalized on top of them,. They got it. They knew they had to assert control somehow and assert the value of what they contributed if they chose to. Expect a long struggle and take hope in the fact that the people have lasted this long and are only getting smarter and stronger. Forward Generations XYZPK!
Thank you for this ABC of the practical common ground finding in our necessity to define the steps to become emancipated as first condition to change the capitalist system . The liberation process starts by a collective unification in order to politically modify or fix the wrongs of capitalist practices for which we need to understand our common ground issues, what is in the way of our emancipation. Our ABC of solutions defined , to fix and transform.
The Baby Boom generation, which learned their values through commercial advertising is turning over the leadership role they held to the Gen X people. These people terrify me. Their values were learned in Econ 101.
It might be argued that a self employed person fits the category of emancipated labour.. and the cost is thus shifted more and more toward the individual, taxes are lowered, services become privatised and the self employed person is told 'you are free, free to choose what ever provider you like.. because you are free'.. but the self employed person isn't free, its just got more burden. More tax and less services.
Yes. "Freedom" is not much use if you don't know how to use it. Everyone knows about fools and their money. Freedom to self destruct and no one bat an eye. Not good enough.
I would say that realizing we are in an economic--the area of our lives that feeds, cloths and shelters us--structure that is hierarchical where the controlling force is at the top should be the one thing people become fully aware of first and foremost. Because everything else in people's lives flows out of that singular fact. An hierarchy is a perversion people have been squeezed into for centuries--it is antithetical to the human psyche. How to change the hierarchy en masse would require coming together and turning your backs on it, forming worker coops and the like.
Not much land to be occupied left. Its all property of various forms. Private, state, public, federal, and national property are forms of property. Every inch of ground in the US is property in those forms. And every form of property is regulated by the market in this particular moment. This is why there are so many homeless for they do not have the money to buy property. They occupy urban property which is public property thinking the property owners in this category of property resent the homeless the least or help the most out of the other category of property owners. State, Federal and Private Property are defended by force. Occupying these lands is asking for trouble. About the only land that belongs to the nation is the land the national highway system is built on, and these could be occupied, but it would involve a Federal response to an occupation. A response litigated in federal court. Potential involving the National Guard depending on how rowdy the occupation is. Either way I think none of these are good strategies for social change. Our present situation calls for universal action. All the particular threats to humanity have added up to a threat to all humanity and the planet. Its time for the Age of the Average Person decide the fate of humanity and its time Mass Action be its usher.
