    Bazadze jumped off the piste almost every other point to question the referee's decision. Poor form really. Whereas Szilagyi just carried on doing his thing respecting the referee. He deserved to win on sportsmanship alone 👏

      @@dootscat3798 yes, but he doesn't sprint at the ref waving his weapon around and also demonstrates sportsmanship when he disagrees with carding his opponent for something he feels he should be carded for too. There is a huge difference in attitude.

    Ahogyan az várható volt 14:10 után a grúz minden egyes kapott tust látványosan megreklamált a bíróknál, majd kikapott. Hisztis kisgyerek módjára rohangált a páston. Egy olasz veszett el benne... Szilágyi Áron pedig minden téren diadalmaskodott! A sportemberi nagyság élő szobra. Tisztelet neki.

    So, on Szilagyi's 14th point, I can understand where Bazadze would be upset, because the action should have been halted when Szilagyi stepped of the strip at 13:41, and the action should have reset with Szilagyi 1m back placing him off the strip, point Bazadze. However, earlier in the action Bazadze actually stepped of the strip at 13:39, so really the action should have been halted there. I have no idea why, upon video review, the referee decided to forgo the rules and not call either.

      @EstellammaSS Рік тому +5

      Because they don’t enforce it by the letter of the rules, but rather by an “agreed interpretation” of the rules. Which basically means the referee can call however he sees fit as long as he’s consistent and doesn’t deviate too much from what other refs are calling. It’s silly and lazy, they should just write it into the rule book and update it seasonally.
      I was told 1 leg off the piste will not be called during action because you don’t want people just stepping out to reset when they lost RoW. It is to give the attacker a chance to finish which is a very big deal in Sabre. My guess is to stay consistent this ref just decides to not call 1 leg off the piste at all.
      I personally fenced foil and the first few points are always spend testing how will the ref call on in-fighting/simultaneous/line and stuff, and I still get mad at times even though I got time to think about these on the piste. I can only imagine how infuriating it would be for Sabre fencers if they’ve met a ref that make calls they’re not familiar with. You can easily lose 5 points to that.

      You see Bazadze go on guard on the right side of the strip, not the center like he should, and the ref should enforce. But moving on, he's got his back foot completely off the strip. Szilagyi still had half of his back foot on, so the ref doesn't have to halt.

    14-12, no way Bazadze is getting that touche, clearly parry riposte for Szilagyi.
    14-14, Szilagyi does pump just a little bit, but it wasn't like Bazadze saw the pump and reacted to it, so I don't see a ref overturning that call.
    But the winning touche? Bazadze has been doing that a lot, attack immediately after opponent attacks, hoping to get the call that opponent was short, No, and then his attack Yes. And sometimes he's getting that call. But I watched that last touche at 50% speed, and I see Szilagyi's foot landing with the touche, not after. Bazadze just played that one too close.

      You mean 14-13? Szilagyi appeared to step off the side in a position where doing so would have meant he had to come en guarde behind his end line and therefore lose the point. Sandro thinks about stopping, but remembers he is already on a yellow and continues so he doesn't get another red. Really difficult from the video angle to tell if Szilagyi was in or not.

      For what? I'm assuming you mean favouring an opponent.
      t.128 says "Competitors must fence to their utmost ability in a sportsmanlike manner until the end of the competition in order to obtain the best possible classification, without giving away hits or seeking to be favoured by being given hits by anyone"
      t.149.1 specifies "does not fence to his utmost ability or who PROFITS from a fraudulent agreement"
      Largely that black card is there to prevent tanking in pool bouts or other arrangements to try and rig the DE draw in your own favour. t.149.1 appears to make clear it is an offence to gain something from an agreement.
      In this case, Bazadze made a mistake. Under the rules he had to be carded. Szilagyi felt this was unfair and explicitly asked the referee's permission to allow the lead to be reset. He didn't gain from it he's in a gold medal bout and just got a freebie so the agreement was only hurting him.
      Also arguably, giving away a point to make your job harder and win on your own merit is more sportsmanlike than going "tough titties Sandro don't look at the box"
      Besides I think Vasil Milenchev being the world's foremost sabre referee is more than qualified to make a judgement call on the legality of this
