To me, the fact that you couldn't pet the dogs (and cats) directly on the touch screen, only their silhouettes, really contributed to me not connecting with it the same way I did the original. I get that they wanted to show off the 3D, but they should have at least had an option to show them on the touch screen. I also found there was something charming about the original low-poly models that was missing
Yes! Same! I really connected with my virtual dogs because I could sort of physically pet them. I felt like I could bond with them. As if they were real and sentient.
This immediately upset me so much, I don't see how nobody during testing noticed this because everyone seems to feel it. Also second that the low poly dogs are cute possibly cuter than the new version.
Wait what the fuck you couldn't pet the dogs? Petting the dogs by symbolic proxy on a different screen doesn't count, if the dogs aren't on the screen you're touching you're not petting the dogs. What a boneheaded decision, no wonder this game failed
Exactly! I still bought it because I'm a cat person and really liked that aspect. But it just wasn't the same petting a silouette and not my actual pet. 😓
Pokemon went and did what you're describing (usually appear on the top 3d screen, moves to the bottom touch screen so you can pet them) and it was amazing
i felt like a big reason people didn’t like nintendogs + cats (but maybe me personally) was that it took out fan favorite features. i know a LOT of people are sorely missing the agility trials and i personally shelved the game in favor of the original ds version because planning out walking routes was my favorite thing to do
The lack of agility trials is exactly what made me lose interest. I missed the walking routes too but agility was my fave out of all the competitions & the only one I bothered to play through to champion level.
Honestly, I do think Nintendogs could work as an app. If they manage to make an in-depth console game, I would be impressed. But I bet it won't happen. A mobile game, though, could keep the franchise alive.
That's what I was thinking too. I'm not sure why they haven't already... Every other IP that fits is getting the mobile game treatment. This one is just a no-brainer.
That will kill the franchise in whole, cause all your doing is making an application not a real game - that will ask for your money 24/7 consumer mindset is what kills games in whole.
It probably also did so much better on the DS than the 3DS because of the DS + Nintendogs bundle, I know that's how I got the game and a lot of my friends were the same. The local Gamestop only had the bundle so if you wanted a DS you were getting Nintendogs whether you liked it or not lmao
The 3DS had Nintendogs at launch, I still have a pink one and my copy of +Cats that came with. I'd actually be willing to bet the majority of its sales came from that bundle though.
To be fair, a super sleepy puppy flat-out ignoring a frisbee is the most realistic thing in the game, haha. When my actual puppy is sleepy, and I try to make him play, he looks at me like I've lost my mind. 😂
@@c-train3630 I'm absolutely a cat person, so I'm glad I can have a game where I can take care of forever but also forget about, unlike a real dog lol. Also, they don't destroy my stuff lol
The change in the walking game really upset me. I liked planning the route and it was rewarding that my dog’s stamina would increase the more I walked them.
A Nintendogs app would work great, but part of me would be sad to see the series leave consoles. It really would be perfect for smart phones tho, a much better fit than Animal Crossing and Mario Kart. But I wouldn't say no to Nintendogs+Cats++Fish+Parrots+Bunnies on Nintendo Switch, I'm all for those classic casual franchises making a comeback
Plus, this would be a great way to explore different types of agility competitions. They have them irl for cats, dogs, and rabbits; why not birds as well?
An app actually exist, it’s cat sweetie and dog sweetie. It’s the same cat and dog from nintendogs, theses app are cool but you have to pay with real money at a moment like all app…
The dogs in the original were so much cuter and "involved" with the player and/or space I think, too. If you didn't play for a while they'd get nervous and bark and whine for you, or if they thought you called their name, even if you didn't, they'd excitedly come run up to you. They always tried having eye contact with you, just from tapping the screen once, they'd perk up and look at you. They'd lick your "hand" for a full minute if you were really close to them. They'd get irritated when you pet them for too long, they would fight with the other dogs and look around the space as if they were watching a fly. They also didn't slide around like the 3DS models do, 'cause imma be real, for how cute and realistic the dogs are in Nintendogs + Cats, their running animation sure looks goofy and choppy as hell, which makes sense, considering all the resources went into their looks, but still, a shame. They look stilted. Some other small, but ultimately when put together, "big" things that bugged me about the 3DS version: 1. Being told how to teach your dog a unique trick? Not finding that out on your own? When I found out (in the original) I could teach my dog how to backflip from a walk, or by playing the Flower Waltz record, it opened up the possibilities for me. I experimented and found out I could make my dog do a handstand, "breakdance," hop on their hind legs, spin around while they begged, etc. I guess it might be nice to know what cool tricks are possible in the 3DS version, but that also takes the fun and mystery out of it. 2. The walks were lame. I don't want to make my dog weave perfectly through a string of cones, with twitchy controls, just for a lame present. I don't wanna collect trash and recycle for an item, I wanna be excited by the strange rare items I can find on the walks themselves. Also the Miis, gross. They looked so uncanny next to their furry friend. The one thing I really did like from the walks though was the inclusion of the café. That was something pretty cool, and a throwback to the cafés seen on walks in the original that you couldn't enter at all, as they were just for show. And going to the beach was pretty cool. 3. The competitions were too hard, and not that fun to be honest. I loved agility trials in the original, and then they were gone. 4. Just overall how the dogs acted within the space. They really didn't do much, they were cute but they weren't *cute* if you know what I mean. Yes I understand I basically just wrote an essay on Nintendogs lmao. Don't worry, I'm aware. But we all gotta be passionate about something, right? The original Nintendogs is my something :)
My biggest issue with the Nintendogs 3DS game is that the dogs all were too similar in size. They all were so tiny on walks! Why is the Great Dane puppy so small?? Why is my French bulldog the same size as the boxer?? I hated that and couldn’t get into it. The dogs on the original have pretty realistic sizes.
Thank you for your little essay, I haven't played the 3DS Nintendogs and after looking into it this evening, I never will! The original Nintendogs is so full of these wonderful little subtleties that makes the pups feel just on the edge of real & alive, I'll forever treasure them and the nostalgia that comes with every little playing sesh. 😌
I remember it was hard for my mom to buy a 3ds. They were really expensive. And the dog game was expensive too. Like $40 to $50. My mom was like "Pokémon or dog? You only get one" I choose Pokémon.
@@Fu9280same, anything that wasn’t sims3 pc expansions I had to wait years until I got that game I think it was always 2-4 years later that I got them when they were marked down in retail stores
What I miss in this video: + the cafés you can visit with your dogs are an adorable idea! - the cats behave like dogs (you'll especially notice this when you're giving them a shower or pet them) Personally I hope for Nintendogs for the Switch. It could be interesting with the motion controls of the joycons! Only the part with the microphone is unfortunate, but maybe we could use an app for that similar to the Nintendo Online app? Other than that, I completely agree with you.
I was. So upset when I saw that the agility portion was gone. I think I took about 20 dogs to champion level. Yes, I bought every version on Nintendogs. No I am not ashamed. It was the reason I got a DS
I'm honestly suprised this game isn't more popular? This was my first game at the age of 6 and I put so much time into it and even bought a second copy to have more pets.
Petz4 was a PC game, but it was arguably the best in the petz/dogz series. There were dress up mechanics, loads of interactive items, plenty of rooms, mini games, and you could have PUPPIES.
The OG Nintendogs is a certified classic, I used to love carrying that everywhere with me. Miss you Chloe and Max, legends. Also, Professor Layton music? Legend.
This is one of the most underrated games of all time. This was the second game I got for my Nintendo 2DS, and it’s my second favorite game overall. It’s all about taking care of my two favorite animals in the world so that’s an automatic win for me. It also usually made me feel better when I was stressed, angry, or upset. It’s a shame that it’s so forgotten, but I honestly feel like nearly all my favorite pieces of media are either hated or unpopular. Despite the reception, and some problems it might have, this game will forever hold a special place for me. ❤
@@StefanyDjuba Besides this one, another one of my favorite games that I find very underrated is Animal Crossing City Folk. Most people seem to dislike it for being a rehash of Wild World, but I personally find it better than that game since it feels like a more streamlined and complete version of it. It’s my second favorite Animal Crossing game. There’s also Pound Puppies and Dog With a Blog which are mostly forgotten by the majority of people, and those happen to be two of my favorite shows of all time. Plus there’s also the gen 5 MLP series which seems to be getting a lot of hate, but I love it no matter how flawed it is. Then there’s the 2017 MLP movie, The Emoji Movie, most of the Equestria Girls movies, Toy Story 4, and The Lion King 2 which are all either hated or just not very well liked by the majority, and those are all among my favorite movies. Those are pretty much all my favorite unpopular pieces of media that come to my mind. It’s perfectly fine if you agree or disagree with me on any of these, just respect my opinions too. Since you say you could relate to this, what’s your favorite unpopular media? I’d like to know.
@@princessstar512 omg hard agree about AC:CF and the lion king 2 and pound puppies. Meantioning Dog with a Blog just brought back flashbacks, although I watched Martha Speaks more lol. Speaking of nostalgic media, there's an old kids show I used to watch all the time called Raggs which seems to be completely forgotten. It was a show about a bunch of colourful dogs (just people in costumes) doing whatever and solving problems kids could relate to, interspersed with songs from their concerts? (ig they had irl concerts because they were based on a kid's band from the 90s) Think bootleg Wiggles but a bunch of dogs. The reason why I'm so confused about why no one seems to remember it is because one, the costume heads were mechanical. The mouths and ears moved and the eyes could move and blink. The company that made the costumes has done a bunch of robotic and sfx work and I think it's awesome. Especially considering it was during the early 2000s and work done for some random kids show based on a kid's band from the 90s. Those original costumes from the band are nightmare fuel lmao. I had forgotten all about the show until I saw an ad for it on Roku TV and instantly all the memories came flooding back. Song tunes I couldn't quite place, weird flashes of memory of colourful dogs in a wacky house, and I went on a deep dive learning about the show. Unfortunately there isnt much information about it which sucks. Because I feel like media means a lot to people and can have a huge influence on people. It took a lot of work to make these shows and the production and history should be preserved! I'm not saying there's much entertainment value in the show if you've never seen it as a kid. It has some moments but it's definitely just a kids show meant for kids with cool technology. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
@@felsiccanis Personally I’m unfamiliar with that Raggs show you mentioned, though that could be because I mainly watched Nick Jr and Disney Junior as a kid. It’s nice to hear about the nostalgia that you get from it though. Plus like you I did also watch Martha Speaks as a kid, so I can relate to you. I really love shows about dogs. I always see it as a good thing to like media that’s hated or unpopular. (Just as long as they’re not supporting something offensive) Keep loving all the things you do and don’t let anyone stop you. It’s nice to know we can agree on a few of these as well.
You can actually take other paths during walks, more optional paths get unlocked as you do more walks. I had 100% the game, i had the gamers house, all prizes including the crown for my Shiba Inu to wear. I loved Nintendogs + Cats honestly
Yes! I needed a video like this. It's honestly so well edited and you bring up so many great points. I was so sad to see how much Nintendogs tanked once it went to the 3DS. It's nice to see someone explaining why this happened, thank you and keep up the amazing work!
Honestly when I played the original nintendogs, I didn’t realize my microphone was busted so I could never get my dog to sit, so I remember never being able to progress… I was so pissed LOL. When I got it on the 3Ds I was so happy it worked this time I really enjoyed the game 😅 I had no idea so many people hated it
I was obsessed with Nintendogs on the DS, but I remember specifically choosing not to buy it on the 3ds because Nintendogs had a bunch of different DS versions, so I assumed it would have a bunch of 3DS versions, and I wanted to wait to see what versions came out before I bought it. Well, they never released other versions, but by the time I realized that, I was an older teen who didn't care about nintendogs anymore lol. That's also why I never ended up getting Pokemon Sword/Shield. I waited for them to release a 3rd version and by the time I realized they weren't coming out, the games were old news that I didn't want to play. I feel like Nintendo's multiple version strategy has kind of backfired with me, lol.
Huh, I somehow never considered making Nintendogs an app instead. That...makes a LOT of sense. My friends and I have been talking about this series non-stop lately for whatever reason, so this was well-timed, and I completely agree with your criticisms. I've tried brainstorming ways to reinvent the game, which I'm normally good at, but I come up flat. Things like Neopets have a lot more wiggle room because there are some fantastical elements to them, unlike this franchise, which is (mostly) realistic. I really hope Nintendo still chooses to revitalize it one way or another down the line, but only once they know how to breathe some freshness into it!
An app actually exist, it’s cat sweetie and dog sweetie. It’s the same cat and dog from nintendogs, theses app are cool but you have to pay with real money at a moment like all app…
nintendogs is an absolute vibe! the cafe music from the 3ds version is amazing (BOSSA BIAS) and so many other songs are chill. P.S. look for the evil clown in the vase
i had both and i feel like (in my case) i loved playing so much with nindendogs ds because EVERYONE was playing it back in the day lol. imagine: birthday parties in which everyone was on their ds getting the special dog you get when you connect with someone who had it already lmao
I actually started playing both the ds and 3ds versions last week and I thought, “Wow this would be great if it was a mobile game” and then this video got recommended to me.
@@amazingnobodylee YES that was my exact thought. Making it a mobile game would absolutely butcher it because of all the ingame purchases, and it also just.. wouldnt be as fun in general? I just wouldnt play nintendogs on my phone, it would feel far too different from playing it on the nintendo.
sorry for commenting so late, but i wanted to touch on something you brought up: the success of the ds as a platform. you hit the nail on the head when describing all the casual games on the ds like brain age & the original nintendogs as “pre-smartphone mobile games”, which is a big reason why the ds sold so well. once the iphone came out and smartphones became more commonplace, the same people who bought a ds for those kinds of experiences now had no reason to buy one anymore (which is why sales of the 3ds were driven by nintendo fans much more than the casual market its predecessor had captivated). don’t get me wrong, there are other factors to consider when talking about the failure of nintendogs 3d compared to the original (such as its lack of innovation over the first game), but the platforms that both games released on also helped shape their destinies considerably. anyways, my name is kaphizmey and thank you for coming to my ted talk lol
Also it came out while everyone was still suffering from the 2008 recession and the 3ds was so expensive in that environment that you just couldn't get it at launch. Since youre not looking to get it at launch you just forget it even exists as new titles come out and you pay more attention once you're able to get a 3ds. I couln't get my 3ds until 2017 while I was almost don with college. I completely forget NintenDogs+Cats existed.
I think Nintendo just needs to create a Nintendogs Console instead, maybe something that breathes and makes noise, yknow something you can actually feed and walk. That'd be really cool
This game RULED my life as a kid, it's sad to see it not get much attention. I played it nearly to completion (besides the Obedience Trial because I accidentally tossed my AR cards in the trash when I got my 3DS in 2012) and collected every item I could find. I even got several promise rings and had 2 Robopups after lots of walks/competition grinding and waiting around with my DS asleep. I still love to listen to the Cafe Petrov music and take out my 3DS to check on my dogs and cats on rare occasions. Poor Bella is probably starving by now =(
I'm really mesmerized by how good the dogs models look upressed, almost like from an PS3 game, and then massive chasm of quality between them and the environments and Miis
They'll probably do one on Switch that has the "Free Updates" model, where the game only lets you have one dog at a time (from a selection of 5 per version, with no way to unlock the others through progression), only be able to participate in one type of event, less items to collect than the predecessors, Bark Mode is locked behind NSO, only one cat to pick from per version, no other animals to start off with, Ted Rumsworth and Archie Hubbs are redesigned as Sportsmates, only one path to travel from during walks, and you can only teach your dog 5 tricks at a time at launch. And for post-launch content, they'll probably do it as follows: 15 new dogs are added, 4 more tournament types are added, including every returning tournament from the previous 2 including one new one, more cats, birds, hamsters, and rabbits are added, new tricks are added, new walk paths are also added, new items are included, leg strap compatibility, and paid DLC that costs $37.50AU that gives you a never-before-seen campaign with tons to do. And if this is the direction the next one goes in, I'm going to lose any remaining faith I've had in Nintendo.
Don't forget amiibo support that only gets you random items, including items that can only be obtained this way, such as the Mario Kart, ? Block, Big Bro Hat, Little Bro Hat, and new ones like Chewable Garlic, Yoshi Egg, and Super Crown. And last but not least, Online Requirement to play the game; without online, you can only pet your dogs, but be unable to use toys or essential items like food, water, and care items like Shampoo, brushes, etc. Also, you can only visit the Kennel to play with the display dogs. Lastly, you cannot save. If there's no save file, you are forced to visit the Kennel first, but you won't be able to buy a dog.
I only had the 3DS version, so I know virtually nothing about the original ! This brought back memories... it was one of the first games I ever got ! The music was delightful, playing vynils was my favorite back in the day.
I played this game to death, and maybe have too many hours.. But about the dog bullet- it still exists. Just train your dog up a bit, I have a hyperspeed Shiba who could catch a frisbee as far as you can throw it lol. I promise it still exists.
you're my new favorite game review / discussion channel. not only is your content funny, well-scripted and BASED, you also have such a huge number of games under your belt. just watching your videos i hear songs from games that mean a lot to me but aren't often discussed. i always have to double take like, "oh is that a song from x? surely not..." and lo and behold it is. i cant wait for your new videos and keep up the good work!
I never played the sequel, but I have played Nintedogs so much as a kid. My sister and me shared the game, and I have so many memories with the game. I still enjoy playing once in a while, always on my blue dsi with the broken shoulder buttons, because the pink dslite my sister owned back then broke in 2015. I never play it on my 3ds or my red dslite I bought from a classmate a few years ago, because it just feels right to take out the dsi every time I want to visit my puppies. Always gives me this happy, nostalgic feeling. Nintendogs is my childhood.
I loved this game and have fond memories of this. I always love that you can get a cat, as I couldn't have a cat growing up, so I loved owning this because of it.
I loved Nintendogs so much especially the 3DS one. The graphics were so cute, the music was adorable. I do think a lot of the lack of success is attributed to the original audience being older when nintendogs 3DS came out. They also had a nintendogs + ds bundle with the original which boosted sales for sure. I really wish they had nintendogs for Switch.
Was trying to find a video to watch to kill some time and I'm happy I found this one. Nintendogs makes me smile and I found your jokes funny! thank you!
As always you make some of the best video game discussion and criticism videos on UA-cam! I think you're totally right about the changing environments being a reason it didn't sell. And I'd buy a Nintendogs app in a heartbeat
I don’t normally like to replace original versions of games with newer ones, but because my cousin lost her copy of Nintendogs, I let her have my copy, but not until I bought Nintendogs + Cats! I even sent her the Nintendogs copy I earmarked for her in my Ocarina of Time 3D box, as I received both a regular and special edition box with my pre-order! (I put Nintendogs in the former)
I loved the original Nintendogs so much that when Nintendogs + Cats launched, I got all 3 versions up-front. Personally, as someone who's grown up with cats, the models looked perfectly fine to me, but they dropped the ball in just about every other way. Not enough breeds and simply not enough to do with them compared to the puppies. Yeah, cats _can_ sleep for upwards of 16 hours a day and you typically can't train them the same way you can a dog, BUT most cat owners will tell you every cat is different and plenty of them can be just as energetic and train-able as dogs. Even if that wasn't true, they still could've done more to make it "+ Cats" as in Nintendogs and Nintencats in one package, instead of the "Nintendogs and cats are here too I guess" that we ended up getting. And while it might not've helped _that_ much, it probably would've helped boost sales at least a little.
Actually the cats could do something other than just exist- if you left your 3ds alone, like genuinely not be in front of your 3ds as it can tell you’re there, the cat would leave and come back with a gift! It can be random things like snacks, recycled things and I think certain accessories too!
I like the 3DS version more because it also has cats especially since we no longer have a real cat so a virtual cat is the next best thing. Maybe I might get back into playing Nintendogs plus cats soon although some breeds like the Labarador did look more realistic on the original DS version whereas on the 3DS version sometimes the colouring can be a bit off but the animals still look realistic. I'm not so keen on the Robopups though.
What happened is that the 3DS game was absolutely nowhere near as fun as the original. The walking sucked because originally planning the route was a lot of fun. The petting sucked because instead of swapping screens, you had to pet a silhouette. And the cats sucked because they did absolutely nothing fun or interesting. Finding rare toys was less fun and overall they were less quirky. Everything that made the original game charming got the fun sucked out of it. I generally didn't enjoy the 3DS game as much as I expected. Only after returning to my old Chihuaha and friends did I truly realise how good I had it with that game.
Nintendogs and cats was my childhood :) I used to have a female golden retriever that I named Matthew because I mistook her for a boy, but I couldn't change it back once I named her so I was stuck with it 😅 I don't know if she was glitched or if I'm remembering it wrong but on the frisbee competition she'd always run at full speed through the sand pits that are supposed to slow your dog down, and we'd always win the frisbee competition because of it. Then one time I took the cartridge on a plane journey with me to see my aunt when I was 7, and I must've lost the cartridge containing Matthew because I couldn't find it when I went back home. It was really upsetting for 7 year old me 😅
Great video, super informative and funny too. I remember being fairly disappointed with Nintendogs and Cats when I got it shortly after its release when I was a teenager. It felt too similar to the original game, and that cats were super boring. By the way I love the sims 1 music at 3:26 lol :)
It’s been 12 years since it’s last game outside crossovers! List of new dog breeds: Japanese chin Pekingese Affenpinscher Wolf Fox Arctic Fox Fennec Fox Blue Heeler Cockapoo Bernese mountain dog Aussie Terrier Portuguese Water Dog Sheepdog Chinese Crest Dog Greyhound List of new cat breeds: Sphynx cat Munchkin cat Scottish fold Lykoi Robo Cat
I loved both the DS and 3DS versions of Nintendogs as a kid and still occasionally play them. It was the first game I bought on both consoles. This was a very interesting video. I would kill to see Nintendogs come back in some form, I think it's a missed opportunity that it hasn't (but maybe I'm also just nostalgic for the pet sim era). Just a nitpick but your walk time DOES increase over time and your dogs still can be trained to get faster at catching discs. Both take time to get to though!
Funny, we are the same exact age and I didn't think twice about picking up Nintendogs + Cats when I got my 3DS on launch day haha I agree that it felt like a downgrade though, but it's mostly just because the idea was so much less novel at the time. I still had fun for like 30 hours
My family couldn't afford a Nintendo for me, but my friend had one and she let me "have" a nintendog. Every time I visited I'd sit and play with it for hours
My cousin had this game when we were kids and my younger sister would OBSESS over it. Me on the other hand I kinda gave it a pass and just watch at the time cause he had a pet irl (RIP Love, I'll remember you forever and your sassy fun attitude still love how we walked in my backyard the one time and you made me flaceplat you silly, long live Lucy)
I LOVED my copy of Nintendogs 3ds. I wasn’t old enough to play the first game, but I remember my mom preordering 4 copies each with different breeds for us. I loved that game so much, my first dog was a golden retriever named Princess.
I've been looking for a video like this for ages! I've first played nintedogs on the Ds but it was a friend's copy. Everyone had Nintendogs back then and there was an explosion of those pet simulator things ("catz" "Bearz and friends" ecc) When I finally got the 3DS, I also bought a copy of Ocarina of Time and Nintedogs! I've played with my puppy Rex for hours and hours, day after day, having no idea the game sold "poorly". The switch is missing the mic. In order to bring Nintendogs back, they either have to pull the Hey You Pikachu thing and pack the game with a special microphone, or make an app for smartphones, which would work really well. But if they haven't done it yet, it means they are prioritizing other franchises.
Nintendogs on the switch kinda already exists, sure it’s not officially nintendogs but it’s basically the same thing, with the most amazing title: little friends, dogs and cats. I’m not even joking it’s the same game but a different title and on the switch.
As a kid I didn't even realize Nintendogs+cats was a sequel, I thought it was another flavor of the first one like the " Chihuahua Labrador and King Charles (?)" Cartridges
HOLY! I missed like a couple of vids and you jumped like 20k subs! Congrats! My dude! Also this was a really helpful vid for me ‘cause I’m making a animation on nintendogs.
I feel like MOST 'oddball' genre games that come out and appeal to TRUE casuals... like grandmas and such... they just die. The consumers there were NEVER going to buy a sequel anyway. They wanted to mess around with this little toy for about 3 weeks and that's it. They're done. For life. When the new one comes out, they go "Oh that thing? Huh. What's better? Graphics? Huh. Ok. Anyway, ya gonna watch The Voice with us, son?"
In my case I didn't like how they changed the Agility contest, and it was me or the dog was less likely to listen to you? It was quite frustrating when walking compared to the original.
I honestly didn't know Nintendogs had a 3ds title and I loved Nintendogs (I had the chihuahua version). I played it so much my dog was a beast in disc competitions too and she had so much stamina for walks I could just cover the whole map. I saw the 3ds title and yah I didn't like the models either.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm not sure why they haven't already... Every other IP that fits is getting the mobile game treatment. This one is just a no-brainer.
That will kill the franchise in whole, cause all your doing is making an application not a real game - that will ask for your money 24/7 consumer mindset is what kills games in whole.
it wouldn't work as an app or a modern game because they'd charge real money for items/coins
There's a version on the switch, it just has both cats and dogs so it's under a different IP
I'd actually be willing to bet the majority of its sales came from that bundle though.
that’s how i got my pink ds with a plastic case and games holder, still have it to this day ! :)
That's how I got the teal colored DS for Christmas as a kid. Loved Nintendogs to death.
To be fair, a super sleepy puppy flat-out ignoring a frisbee is the most realistic thing in the game, haha. When my actual puppy is sleepy, and I try to make him play, he looks at me like I've lost my mind. 😂
I was so disappointed we weren't able to do cat competitions:( I wanted to go on walks with my kitten too
Thats why i dont like nintendogs. I love kitties.
@@c-train3630 I'm absolutely a cat person, so I'm glad I can have a game where I can take care of forever but also forget about, unlike a real dog lol. Also, they don't destroy my stuff lol
Originally idea was whatever you could do with a dog you could do with a cat also, but they changed it because it look weird to the developers
@@paradoxzee6834 thats their taste
Thats why im not thrilled about nintendogs.
I agree, I want to take my cat for a walk and train him to exercise. I want a dlc for it
Something I noticed is that the Miis they use in the background are the Miis from Wii Sports, so you can potentially see Matt’s pet
something about matt from wii sports being a proud owner of a pet dog or cat is so adorable to me
Yeah, me too
Interesting, they usually use the 3DS/Wii U era console Miis. I guess early games used the Wii ones instead?
I wonder if Matt's pet is also a god at sports?
is Matt the trainer?
The change in the walking game really upset me. I liked planning the route and it was rewarding that my dog’s stamina would increase the more I walked them.
Same!
there's a robot dog??? ive had this game since i was like 7 how have i never known this 😭😭
A Nintendogs app would work great, but part of me would be sad to see the series leave consoles. It really would be perfect for smart phones tho, a much better fit than Animal Crossing and Mario Kart. But I wouldn't say no to Nintendogs+Cats++Fish+Parrots+Bunnies on Nintendo Switch, I'm all for those classic casual franchises making a comeback
Nintendogs + Friends. Please Nintendo..
Nintenpets?
You can just emulate the ds version
Some other small, but ultimately when put together, "big" things that bugged me about the 3DS version:
Does anyone remember playing surprise symphony in the og and they'd get scared? I did that to punish them
I remember it was hard for my mom to buy a 3ds. They were really expensive.
And the dog game was expensive too. Like $40 to $50.
My mom was like "Pokémon or dog? You only get one"
I choose Pokémon.
Lol nice :3
I think you probably made the best choice haha
I had to wait until they come out a few yrs
@@Fu9280same, anything that wasn’t sims3 pc expansions I had to wait years until I got that game
I think it was always 2-4 years later that I got them when they were marked down in retail stores
What I miss in this video:
+ the cafés you can visit with your dogs are an adorable idea!
- the cats behave like dogs (you'll especially notice this when you're giving them a shower or pet them)
Personally I hope for Nintendogs for the Switch. It could be interesting with the motion controls of the joycons! Only the part with the microphone is unfortunate, but maybe we could use an app for that similar to the Nintendo Online app? Other than that, I completely agree with you.
It's such a damn shame Nintendogs died. I really liked this series
I was. So upset when I saw that the agility portion was gone. I think I took about 20 dogs to champion level. Yes, I bought every version on Nintendogs. No I am not ashamed. It was the reason I got a DS
I agree, agility was my favourite thing to do in this game
I'm honestly suprised this game isn't more popular? This was my first game at the age of 6 and I put so much time into it and even bought a second copy to have more pets.
2:39 I like how the cats and dogs look as realistic as possible, but then there is just a Mii in the background
I think we should all get the game and start a Nintendo Dog + Cats revolution and make it the new trend
that would be cool,for real💯
Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard
On it
Petz4 was a PC game, but it was arguably the best in the petz/dogz series. There were dress up mechanics, loads of interactive items, plenty of rooms, mini games, and you could have PUPPIES.
The 3ds had so many amazing comfort titles. Just hearing the soundtrack makes me insanely happy lol. Great vid btw
tell me more about your favorite unpopular media. I could relate very well to this myself
Damn I didn't realise I wrote so much lol
I loved Nintendogs + Cats honestly
what prizes other than the Crown were there?
I'm shocked there hasn't been a Nintendogs mobile game. Feels like a match made in heaven.
Yes! I needed a video like this. It's honestly so well edited and you bring up so many great points. I was so sad to see how much Nintendogs tanked once it went to the 3DS. It's nice to see someone explaining why this happened, thank you and keep up the amazing work!
I decided to pull out my 3ds for the first time in a few years after watching this and the nintendogs + cats just so happened to be inside
i had this game as a kid and for me it will always have a soft spot in my heart, i loved playing it so much and thought it was a ton of fun
It’s the same cat and dog from nintendogs, theses app are cool but you have to pay with real money at a moment like all app…
apps are cancer just trying to get as much money as possible before they close
I play it on a DS emulator on my phone. Problem solved.
nintendogs is an absolute vibe! the cafe music from the 3ds version is amazing (BOSSA BIAS) and so many other songs are chill. P.S. look for the evil clown in the vase
i had both and i feel like (in my case) i loved playing so much with nindendogs ds because EVERYONE was playing it back in the day lol. imagine: birthday parties in which everyone was on their ds getting the special dog you get when you connect with someone who had it already lmao
I actually started playing both the ds and 3ds versions last week and I thought, “Wow this would be great if it was a mobile game” and then this video got recommended to me.
I wouldn’t want it to be a mobile game as they’d definitely shove in app purchases in it
@@amazingnobodylee YES that was my exact thought. Making it a mobile game would absolutely butcher it because of all the ingame purchases, and it also just.. wouldnt be as fun in general? I just wouldnt play nintendogs on my phone, it would feel far too different from playing it on the nintendo.
@@ReddyRAD theres a certain charm to playing a game on a 3ds for some reason
I GOT THE MISSILE REFERENCE! At least I know someone who loves Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective!
4:02 ...yeah... you need to train them first.. after that they'll bring you back the frisbee in seconds, I wouldn't really count that as a problem...
sorry for commenting so late, but i wanted to touch on something you brought up: the success of the ds as a platform.
you hit the nail on the head when describing all the casual games on the ds like brain age & the original nintendogs as “pre-smartphone mobile games”, which is a big reason why the ds sold so well. once the iphone came out and smartphones became more commonplace, the same people who bought a ds for those kinds of experiences now had no reason to buy one anymore (which is why sales of the 3ds were driven by nintendo fans much more than the casual market its predecessor had captivated).
don’t get me wrong, there are other factors to consider when talking about the failure of nintendogs 3d compared to the original (such as its lack of innovation over the first game), but the platforms that both games released on also helped shape their destinies considerably. anyways, my name is kaphizmey and thank you for coming to my ted talk lol
That "Missle" reference just got me, all the feels! Thank you for that and the video! 😌
Nintendo should just make a whole dog for us
Im so happy someone finally mentions the music!! Its so good and memorable both the original and sequel
I can't believe I'm seeing this video, Nintendogs + Cats was literally the ONLY game I played on my 3DS!! I adored it!
Well I was 8 when Nintendogs + Cats came out, *my* very first Nintendo/videogame ever. (we also had games on our Pc, but I don't count those)
This game RULED my life as a kid, it's sad to see it not get much attention.
You can just say Animal Crossing
I only had the 3DS version, so I know virtually nothing about the original ! This brought back memories... it was one of the first games I ever got ! The music was delightful, playing vynils was my favorite back in the day.
I played both games. The original is a legendary game. The multiplayer was also a nice thing.
I always love that you can get a cat, as I couldn't have a cat growing up, so I loved owning this because of it.
nintendogs is a certified hood classic… I would know
I have searched countless mobile games and none of them reach the experience of what that series had to offer :T
we need a mod where the bull terriers all say hoy instead of barking
I did like that in nintendogs + cats, that the dog's personalities affected the dog's performance overall and in certain sports.
I adored nintendogs + cats! I loved its new walking style, it’s new dog breeds, and of course, kitties!
The 3Ds one was my favourite I’m shocked it was considered so average. I guess it might be because I didn’t have the original
You know - I actually would be really excited for a Nintendogs app.
I really do think a $15 eshop title could really help bring the series into the limelight of a console game
RIP Nintendogs 2005 - 2011
This needs to make a comeback along with my sims kingdom
The mic is bad? I feel so frustrating trying to talk to my pupper.
I like the 3DS version more because it also has cats especially since we
no longer have a real cat so a virtual cat is the next best thing. Maybe I might
get back into playing Nintendogs plus cats soon although some breeds like the
Labarador did look more realistic on the original DS version whereas on the 3DS
version sometimes the colouring can be a bit off but the animals still look realistic.
I'm not so keen on the Robopups though.
This was my first game on 3ds and i was addicted to it... miss the game so much
What happened is that the 3DS game was absolutely nowhere near as fun as the original.
3:56 this is so realistic tho lmfao this is exactly what my dog would do 😭😭😭 unless he's been properly hyped up he is not playing fetch for no reason
not the miracle mask music cranking in whole talking about the 3ds flopping man
Nintendogs and cats was my childhood :)
I used to have a female golden retriever that I named Matthew because I mistook her for a boy, but I couldn't change it back once I named her so I was stuck with it 😅
I don't know if she was glitched or if I'm remembering it wrong but on the frisbee competition she'd always run at full speed through the sand pits that are supposed to slow your dog down, and we'd always win the frisbee competition because of it.

"Like Neopets..."
*Shows a Djinn from Golden Sun.*
To be fair. I didn't even know this game existed. I heard nothing about it. Maybe it was their advertisement?
Funny, we are the same exact age and I didn't think twice about picking up Nintendogs + Cats when I got my 3DS on launch day haha
I agree that it felt like a downgrade though, but it's mostly just because the idea was so much less novel at the time. I still had fun for like 30 hours
Shout out for the professor layton music
I think now is the perfect time for them to do it, people who were into the game are now adults with their own spending money
My family couldn't afford a Nintendo for me, but my friend had one and she let me "have" a nintendog. Every time I visited I'd sit and play with it for hours
I played Nintendogs a lot as a kid.
Poggers for doggers. This classic game is the best video idea yet
Everyone had Nintendogs back then and there was an explosion of those pet simulator things ("catz" "Bearz and friends" ecc)
When I finally got the 3DS, I also bought a copy of Ocarina of Time and Nintedogs!
I had nintendogs+cats golden retriever edition and absolutely loved it
Nintendogs on the switch kinda already exists, sure it’s not officially nintendogs but it’s basically the same thing, with the most amazing title: little friends, dogs and cats. I’m not even joking it’s the same game but a different title and on the switch.
Got really happy when I heard the Monte D’or music in this video. Good to know Miracle Mask still has at least some relevance.
I only ever had the sequel as a kid, and I loved it. But I can see why it would work better as a phone app than a modern console game.
As a kid I didn't even realize Nintendogs+cats was a sequel, I thought it was another flavor of the first one like the " Chihuahua Labrador and King Charles (?)" Cartridges
"if the formula ain't broke, slap some cats on it" is a phrase the world should live by I think.
HOLY! I missed like a couple of vids and you jumped like 20k subs! Congrats! My dude! Also this was a really helpful vid for me ‘cause I’m making a animation on nintendogs.
I finally get the joy of being one of the 6 people who got that one!
A yes my favorite Neopet, the Earth Djinn from Golden Sun.
Your voiceover quality sounds so good! I hope I can get mine to sound so crisp and clean some day! Do you have any tips?
In my case I didn't like how they changed the Agility contest, and it was me or the dog was less likely to listen to you?
It was quite frustrating when walking compared to the original.
Yeah these dogs were so stubborn. They would just ignore me lol
