How to FILL Raised Garden Beds CHEAP and EASY

  • Today I want to share how to fill a raised bed garden and save money. I have used this method for years in my garden and the results have been incredible. You will see in detail how I fill my raised beds, the results I have had with this technique, and a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
This idea comes from an old gardening technique called hugelkultur, where you fill the bottom of your beds with logs, sticks, leaves, and any organic matter that you have. You will save money because you will only need to fill the top 12 to 18 inches with quality soil and the rest will be filler. On top of your logs and sticks layer you can add native soil, compost, or old potting mix like I did. So never throw your old potting mix away, reuse your potting mix to fill the bottom of your raised bed garden.
Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤️

Hi James! Thanks for the clear description. Tucks still going strong at 14 years because he eats better than any other. 🐕
I plan to follow your instructions the next week or so. My only concern is termites. I have seasoned logs and sticks from last summer to add to the bottom. Grape Vines too. There's a termite colony nearby and I am wondering if I should dig a trench and treat against the base of the raised beds with termite pellets that dissolve in water. Since the soil inside won't be treated, I'm guessing it will be safe, but want your opinion since it will be within a few feet of my house.

🥰🥰🥰 Boss Man Tuck!! I had planned on making your version of pallet beds this year but now that I see you are switching to Birdies and that they'll last longer and are maintenance free for years, I think I'll go that way. I'll get one this year to try it out and then plan for more later. I have a neighbor who's a tree service guy so I can get lots of logs to fill my bed. I'll be following you to see how the self watering bed goes and to see how square foot gardening in a Birdies is done. Thanks for all the information you provide and the inspiration and energy you bring to our gardening lives.🌻🍎🫐

If planning to start a single raised bed in the future, look up local Arborist and ask if you can go and pick up some logs.
Note: Many Arborists deliver but they will only drop a truck full which is way to much.
Give them a tip or case of beer, and if you take a chain saw you can cut it up to size that can fit your truck and easier carry and stack in you yard.

Or just go to a local recycling center and bring a bunch of 40 gallon bags to put mulch. Many people also leave logs along the road in the winter.

    Hi Tuck.
I've got 5 gal pails for my indoor 5x5 grow tent. Would I gain anything by puting maybe 4 inches of rotted material, nothing green, in the bottoms of my pails. Would that be a source of microbes? Would worms stay in the bottoms of these pails with drainage holes or would I have worms all over the inside of my tent, Ha!
Thanks for all your stuff, Tuck. Hard to believe he's 14. Go Tuck, Go

In a new 12” high raised bed, for shallow-root vegetables where there really is no room for decaying logs, wondering if a layer of cedar mulch on the bottom would be a good idea, or just of waste of cedar mulch?
Also, have a yard-full of pine cones & long pine needles I rake up every year. Have read concerns about adding such things to the bottom of a bed. Thoughts or comments?

It currently has about 3" or so gravel on the floor, should I rake the gravel away to expose the soil floor before I put the open-bottom cedar raised bed down or is the gravel OK under all the additives? Can I put cardboard on the bottom? Thanks.

Raised beds can be built from free recycled materials, so poor or not affordable is B.S. anyone willing to put a bit of research and elbow grease can do this without excuse’s . Where there is a will- there is a way ! Im terminally ill and disabled on a shoestring budget and have scrounged enough used pallets and other materials for free and a few dollars for fasteners. Seeds were free from university agricultural department, the dirt and compost I went into the forest and found beautiful black soil under and around oak trees that have many decades of leaves composted naturally. Don’t rob it all from one spot, but gather a bit from a large area and you’ll get free quality soil and won’t harm the surrounding environment plus you get free earthworms in the process. Just sift out any roots that you may gather up to keep from having noxious weeds

Hello James. I am sorry that I am trying to get in touch with you this way. I have tried repeatedly to get in touch with you. I am loosing the ability to plant my seeds this year. I made the decision to support your channel. My seed tray lids arrived soon after my order. The trays however are not here. After waiting weeks to get the trays, I tried to cancel. No response from your team. A few days later the email that I originally received said the trays were sent. They are floating around our state. They will not deliver them to my post office box. I can not change the address because they were mailed with the wrong name. They came from the west coast of our country. Not from New Jersey. So I guess you are using drop shipping. I have spent hours on the phone. Sent many messages. I will not order from you again. Not because of the delay. But because you do not have any customer service that can or will help me. I am actually very angry. I am going to be starting my seeds in plastic cups. We are so late in starting our seeds. It’s my fault. I placed the order assuming I would get them in time. I will still watch your videos. But do not trust your store to deliver. Rudy

    @Yankee_Doodle_Stacker 6 місяців тому +1

Um No. The way to fill these beds is to use straw bale gardening. for 6 dollars a bale you get a perfect grow for cucumbers, melons etc. And at the end of the season what do you have? 6 inches of free compost in the bed. do that for 3 years and you are golden and have a lot more money in your pocket. After the conditioing cost of the bales they need no fertilizer as they feed the plants as they decompose. I have beds nearly full but honestly I transfer the compost to my tomatoe beds where I grow them in dirt still. Everything else the straw just works too well not to.

I certainly will do, never thought of doing this, saves money and good rich soil. It feeds the soil over time, slow release fertiliser.

We live in northern MN and I gotta say, kind of envious of your growing season, but you know, that's just another victory to earn. Love ya Tuck!

I did this with my raised beds. I put sticks in the bottom of my big flower containers also. Leaves and compost. Thank you for this video. Live to Tuck ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊

I would say, as an older person, physical necessity, the knees and ability to control the water is why I’m going raised containers. There is only two of us so it isn’t like I need a huge garden space. This looks perfect.

Love the terra-cotta color!! So excited the see what you grow in them and on the trellis 😁 made my own bed this year with an old pallet and making an arch with some animal fencing. Hoping and saving to get one of the taller metal beds for my parents soon 🙏🏼
