A good choice for "If you're going to learn one repair technique..." My students are always impressed - ok, "mildly appreciative" - when I make one of those adjustments on their horns.
A repair tech told me years ago that he usually liked to leave a little bit of play in the bis adjustment, because it's so hard to get both the bis and the G-sharp perfect. "Jazz players don't care, but you classical players, you want to have the 1 + 1, so I have to work harder!" (He said it tongue-in-cheek; he went on to say that working with classical players had made him better at his job.)
