A tribute of this kind is badly overdue. I'm pleased that Top Gear UK has seen fit to finally deal with that lack of notice of the history of the Willy's Jeep and its impact on automotive history during and after World War II. Thanks a LOT, guys!

I own a 58 Willys Cj5, a 44 Ford GP, and an 85 AMC Cj7, grew up riding in and learned how to drive (at age 11) in my Dad's 70 Kaiser Cj5 Renegade....I love Jeeps, I'll never not own one....
What a shame that you could not use a real WW2 jeep in your you tube video. The jeep you are using is a post WW2 jeep and is not the same Model as a 1941 - 1945 jeep. It puzzles me as there's thousands of real WW2 jeeps still out there.
Same thing with a Model-T. You can still pull them out after 80 years of being parked and get it up and running again as long as the engine/transmission isn't locked up. Everything was built to a higher standard back then, than anything produced within the last 50 years could ever hope to be.
Here in the philippines the wwii army jeeps was converted/modified to mass transport public transport .... Became jeepneys, the main and most popular land vehicle in the philippines
There’s Only One….no doubt about it. But that M38 which you’re carting about on the trailer is not the WW2 Jeep that was the original ancestor to the present day Jeep.
There's plenty of Willys Jeeps around , Aussie Alby Mangels found lots on a South Pacific island that had been abandoned at the end of WW2 in the Japanese theatre along with heavy trucks and hundreds of 44 gallon drums full of diesel
This is a beautiful history lesson and very beautifully told by Top Gear. Time and again American ingenuity and leadership shows up in the forms of these great innovative and revolutionary products - Jeep Wrangler - that are great by themselves, and also inspire other nations to build their line of products. How amazing it is that all the American car manufacturers got a chance to submit their designs in a fair manner for an enticing project like this, and the mighty Ford even after losing the design bid, took it in stride and helped the American government build the jeeps. Amazing! Respect to Ford for showing camaraderie and supporting the American government's plans. And respect to the American government for selecting designs based on merit, instead of just giving the contract away to a popular car-maker of the time, and potentially ending up with a less effective vehicle.
The 80s and 90s Cherokees and Grand Cherokees into the 2000’s only every came with square headlights. Even some SJs and J Series trucks had square headlights.
Well that’s what Jeep U.K are calling it on their website. Perhaps you should take it up with them, particularly if they’re putting the wrong badges on their cars, as clearly shown at 0:34. Scandalous!
The vintage jeep in the video is an m38 which is the jeep from the Korean War not from ww2 the ww2 jeeps were the Willy’s mb and the ford gpw and In the Vietnam war the main 4x4 1/4 ton truck was not a jeep but was the m151a1 nicknamed the mutt which was made by ford for the U.S. military during the Vietnam war.
You can actually buy willys jeeps fully restorated in Germany, it just takes some years until you get it and costs a little fotrune but they are great really love this car
He is driving an M38 the Jeep not used in WW2, but there are plenty of original Willys MB jeeps around (and Ford GPW's). They could of at least got an original for this video😕
Before willys Dodge was the first vehicle from horseback used in the army. Before Willys Dodge trucks were serving as 4x4's in 1932 with trucks to supply the lines. Before jeep was called jeep in 1963. Solders used the name to describe the Dodge 3/4 ton command cars and 1/4 ton willys.Jeep was nick name.
When the EMP hits and you need to go into the thick underbrush of wooded areas, which one do you think will come out on top? Super expensive super computerized technical wide spaced modern wrangler or the plain jane simple old Willys Jeep that was assembled quickly by ordinary laymen?
Don't know why LR discontinued their best seller for the awful unpractical, if needing a working off roader, new Defender. The first 1948 Landrover had the same 74" wheelbase but better mounted cart springs and had an Agricultural hitch option with PTO. Dearer than a new Fergy though, but had more uses.
This is Jack Rix presenting this video - this is the same person who, at the video launch of the new Land Rover Defender in Namibia last year stated: "Africa - what a country!" (the video was removed from UA-cam shortly afterwards, after various "gaffs" had been removed, then reposted.....). Words like "educational" and "accuracy" rarely appear in the same sentence as Jack Rix's name......

I love the history side of this video, but why does it feel like I’m watching a Jeep ad? The new Jeep is still the same as the last 3 years?! It does look nice compared to an 80 year old relic but come on. I’m just waiting for him to tell me how I can buy one of these jeeps and what the financing is at my local dealer
He misidentified the Jeep he was driving as an M-38. (Nope, there's one in my garage). He's driving an M-38A1. Why do a video and use a much different car from the 1950s when there's lots of the real thing around?
Love the original Willys Jeep, a real
Icon thats for sure. I learned to drive manual on a 44. When bought it was a 6 volt system.
A tribute of this kind is badly overdue. I'm pleased that Top Gear UK has seen fit to finally deal with that lack of notice of the history of the Willy's Jeep and its impact on automotive history during and after World War II.
Thanks a LOT, guys!
Wow! Nice to see this Willys in action. I drove one in the early 80's, on road and off road. Off road it was one of a kind.
a group of soldiers can disassemble and reassemble a Willys Jeep in less than 3 minutes
Not all soldiers. I’m one, and the only way I could think of to disassemble it that quickly, would be to hit it with a Javelin

The jeep you’ve used is an M38a1, not an original WW2 Willy’s MB or Ford GPW, it’s not like you couldn’t have gotten one of them either.
We have a willys jeep and i wanna drive it someday..
And the willys jeep actually looks coller than the wrangler for me
Beautifully made.

"after a bit of fiddling, willys came to attention" brilliant writing 😂
Big difference is one lasted 80 years and still runs, other won't last five years without major work

It also started the Toyota landcruiser
If it’s built in Holland, it’s a Nekaf. The Dutch army used them in the 50’s ans 60’s…

The 80s and 90s Cherokees and Grand Cherokees into the 2000’s only every came with square headlights. Even some SJs and J Series trucks had square headlights.
3:59 in a Willys, privates are pressed together 🤣🤣
Land rover, Land cruiser, patrol, all inspired by the jeep.

Kaiser Willys Jeep CJ2A Is my favorite
you are forgetting the toyota land cruiser series..
Lot of them are still running in India.. cj-3A also manufactured in India
Land rover isn’t even the most successful Jeep inspired vehicle. It's the land cruiser.
what about mahindra?
Land cruiser is shit
Wow!
how can l watch you'r programme on tv
That become a my government(high rank person) vehicles (the new one)and still need a Suzuki samurai or land cruiser LC 80 for towing Or rescue them

Is it me or his coming the Richard hammond of the current top gear.its only time soon we need him on prime time telec
I am pretty sure that wasn't Willy's Jeep
Look more like CJ5 to me
It’s a Willy’s m38 also Willy’s made the cj5 for several years until being bought by amc
The Donut Wheelhouse episode on Jeeps that just posted clearly has a much more accurate account of the original Jeep's genesis
