At 3:09, Sunny talks about a summer workout session with Fletch for Kylan Boswell to "lose a lot of the baby fat". Okay, we need any honestly check there. Nobody is losing baby fat at 19 years old, nor does that occur in one summer workout session. The real story on Kylan Boswell (which Sonny is yet to tell us here) has to do with his maturity as an athlete (and also as student and in every aspect of his life).
Kylan was off at Arizona at just 17 years old and shouldered very high basketball expectations for such a young man. A challenge for Kylan this season is find the right role. As a 6'2" 200 lbs guard with average quickness, he doesn't have the body to make him a great penetrator. Instead, Kylan will get opportunities on offense from the 3-pt line and from mid-range shots (including backdoors) when defenders overplay him or in transition, especially if other talented guards like Kasparas and Will can find Kylan in transition or on fastbreaks.
But let's come back to Kylan's weight. Yes, he's up to just over 200 pounds from high school where he listed at about 180. He has gained upper body strength and that can be helpful when defending and in making shots near the basket through contact. That's not "baby fat", but rather a lack of discipline regarding alcohol, diet, and other behaviors (partying, gambling, etc.) The worst of these showed by mid-season at Arizona even hours before critical games like in the PAC-12 regular season and tournament games. This is absolutely what Kylan Boswell's second chance is all about. We don't need any more of that. The shots of him passed out or around alcohol in any way (puke on clothing, etc.) We don't need shots of him at a blackjack table in Las Vegas (allegedly up until 3 am in the hours before big loss to Oregon in the PAC-12 tourney). Instead, we need a brand new much more disciplined Kylan. A guy who realizes this is it. He's on a team with super talented freshmen (Kasparas and Will) who will takeover of the main point guard roles and can create strong advantages fir Illinois on offense. If teams don't stop these two guys, they will scorch opponents for 20 to 30 points each. If teams start collapsing and helping against Kasparas and Will, they will leave Kylan wide open. This is where we need a disciplined Kylan to play his role as an excellent shooter and trustworthy ball handler and passer. No, Kylan will not be leading the Illini in scoring, but he should get open shots and attack the basket when defenders overplay him. He needs to be a great shooter (about 40% from 3 and about 80% from the line) and a serious defender and no-nonsense athlete that puts basketball first, in front of everything else, all the time. That will make Kylan Boswell a great contributor to the Illini and help him reach is his goals.
