Jageshwar Mahadev is situated amidst a dense deodar forest. This place of Lord Shiva is world famous for its temple group. You can also guess its antiquity from the fact that the Archaeological Survey of India has taken it under its protection.
Jageshwar Temple is situated at an altitude of 1870 meters and Jata Ganga flows right next to it. The main temple of Shiva is surrounded by 124 smaller ancient temples of different deities. Jageshwar Dham is one of the largest group of temples located in a single complex in the world.
The main temples here include Jageshwar Temple, Maha Mrityunjay Temple, Hanuman Temple, Surya Temple, Neelkanth Temple, Navagraha Temple, Navadurga Temple, Batuk Bhairav ​​Temple etc. Pilgrims have darshan of the Lord after taking bath in the Brahma Kund near the temple. According to local belief, this is the eighth Jyotirlinga, for which it is written - Nagesham Darukavane.
It is also known as the Valley of the Gods. It was rebuilt in different periods from the 7th to the 14th century. It is believed that Adi Guru Shankaracharya visited Jageshwar Dham before going to Kedarnath Dham and renovated and rebuilt many temples. Most of the temples were built by the kings of Katyuri dynasty.
The Archaeological Survey of India has also established a museum here. More than 174 idols recovered from the area of ​​temples of Jageshwar group, Dandeshwar group and Kuber temple group have been kept here. These sculptures are from around the ninth to thirteenth century. In this one can see Uma-Maheshwar, the Sun God holding a lotus in both hands and a four feet high bronze statue of the local Paun king etc.
Jageshwar Dham is located in Almora district of Uttarakhand and the distance from the nearest railway station Kathgodam is 170 kilometers. This temple remains open for darshan throughout the year. You can also enjoy snowfall here between December to February. However, the best time to come here is from April to June and September to November.
