You do realize the original Parthenon in Athens was shattered by an explosion in 1687. A great deal of rubble was stolen, and smuggled out of the country. Many of the frescoes remain in the British Museum in London after they were removed by Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin in the early 1800s, even though Athens has built a state-of-the-art museum to house these relics. The original Parthenon remains a must see like many of the other ancient sites worldwide, many of which are in even greater ruin. If you expect the people of Greece to "fix up" the original, maybe you can get them a good price on sheetrock, putty, cement and glue. Of course we'd have to put a McDonald's next door to really give it that American authenticity.
How I wish they would. Would be incredible to see back in its full glory. They can still use the remaining foundation and restore it so part of the original is there
As an American I don't think we're trying to compete with the original. It was created more because it's interesting, brings history back to life, and of course it attracts tourists.
