I review the PRS Mark Holcomb SE Guitar. IMHO It's one of the best guitars priced under $1200.00. One of the best PRS guitars yet.

Jarod, you’re right about everything you said about the Soldano. I bought the Astro, in large part due to your video comparing it to the SLO. I might check out a Tonex next. I trust your opinion. Other gear reviewers I’m skeptical, but if you or Kyle Bull say it kicks ass……. I trust that I’m gonna get a good kick ass per dollar ratio out of it!!!!!!
Thanks for being a genuine dude!

+1 for the ToneX for me. As a frugal player with a perpetual case of bad G.A.S., I have a lot of gear (mostly carefully shopped for used) that I consider especially good-for-the-money, but if I had to choose the #1 piece I would replace in a heartbeat if lost/stolen, it's the humble little $399 ToneX full price new.
Next on my list, and maybe worth an honorable mention to value-oriented players like myself is that Fender FR-12 which looks to possibly be the ultimate budget combo paired with either ToneX + HXFX or maybe that new Kemper Player which is another good looking bit of affordable gear.

Hey Brother, outside of my Q.C., I am very pleased with my Allen & Heath CQ 18- T digital mixer that I can also record to an SD card with before throwing tracks into my DAW.

I've been playing forever and have owned all the high end stuff but at this point, I'm on stage with a $900 Schecter, a $700 Charvel and a $400 Boss Katana. Dead reliable, great sounds, great effects, covers a ton of ground for those of us in cover bands, etc.
If I'm not playing through the katana, it's the $400 UAFX Lion pedal and OX Stomp.
A few other guys in town who gig every weekend are also running Katana combos with $1000~ish guitars because it gets the job done. They all have their boutique gear at home but when they're out making money on stage, it's the affordable gear that's at every bar in town.

Amp1 Iridium. 800$, sire guitar 350$, plumes overdrive, 99$, and a Randall 4x12 with the jaguar speakers, 300$ used. You can just use the iridium direct in or with an IR loader pedal straight to the board. That works, too.

For the most part I only buy budget gear. After playing for decades I have learned that if a budget piece has good bones than it works just as well for me as any more expensive piece. Especially guitars. Once you learn what to look for and learn how to do your own set ups even budget guitars can be mind blowing.

I’m starting to hate affordable gear advice from UA-cam. Got a Helix because the vids always sound great post EQ but don’t after 2 years with a FRFR cab I’m still a tube lover! Which is different from what the channels promise. Cheap amps like the Katana get talked about a lot and while a great product I think after a certain point you understand why things cost what they do and spend more money over time cutting corners.
Another example! The Epi 1959 was a Gibson killer…supposedly. Played an actual Gibson and it’s night and day! Thanks for the vid tho

    • @intelligentmastermined
      @intelligentmastermined 2 місяці тому +2

I dont think the Helix is supposed to be a total replacement for a “real” setup. I mostly use it when I get a bug to tone chase and then when I get my fix I go back to my normal rig.

    • @derrickmusedm
      @derrickmusedm 2 місяці тому +2

@@intelligentmastermined its marketed as a replacement but never explicitly said....its a subliminal for sure lol every review talks about how gigging/recording is so much easier, etc which is true to a degree but any budget alternative never satisfies me in the long run IMO. Eventually you will get to a point where u want to know what the expensive products are about and after tasting it its hard to look back.

Great video, Jarrod. As someone who buys low-mid price range Squiers and Epiphones, upgrading the bridge, nut, tuners, pots, and pups, I'm all for affordable gear. Even after upgrading, I'm still under $600-700 in toto and the guitar plays like a $1500 instrument. As well, for recording guitars, I can't recommend highly enough the IK Multimedia AXE i/o One. Dirt cheap for what it does, and it does a lot. Plus it comes with Amplitude 5 SE and ToneX SE, which are amazing tonal resources. And it goes without saying that the ToneX pedal is a steal. Of course, I also love my Stealth 100 head.

I have four amps: one is the Redseven dirt, amazing amp and it's the only one that is not "affordable". The others are a jet city 50 (slightly modded) , a prs mt15 and a Victory kraken. Did the require some manteinance? Yes. Was the manteinance expencive? Not at all. Do they sound Great? YES! Am I happy with those pieces of Gear? Absolutely. And I saved some money

Great vid bro. I think the iconic can hand with more expensive stuff all day and I'm sure if you were to get one as your first you may not need another amp.

A lot of famous bands sounded the way they did because they had whatever gear they could beg, borrow or steal when they started out. So they made it work and came up with something and developed a sound of their own.

Jarrod I was totally blown away by this video everything sounds awesome. I especially enjoyed the Schecter banshee Mach 7 I will most likely be ordering one within the month time I will also let you know my thoughts on this guitar as well. I have own a few modern Schecter within the past year. I have owned the Apocalypse c7 and the silver mountain c7 blood moon really loved the blood moon really like playing a multiscale guitar and bass. I play mostly Death metal, black metal and some classical music. Thanks for making this channel!! Love it!!

A good affordable amp for people just starting out would also be the solid state Marshall mg100hdfx half stack.
It gets a lot of hate from snobs but I also own high gain tube amps and the mg100hdfx actually holds up extremely well and will easily get anyone into metal territory if they know what they’re doing.
You can find those mg100hdfx 100 watt half stacks used all over the place for under $400.
Throw either an sd1 or even an old metal zone (that pedal works surprisingly well with that particular amp) and you’re pretty good to go especially for a beginner under $400.
I may even actually get another one at some point.

5150s aren't just good "for the price." They are good, period. There's a reason why they've been the go-to amp on modern metal albums for the last 2-3 decades.

Ive owned mt15 for 2 years..and compaired it straight up to the new iconic white tolex i had just got and mt15 smoked it for tones same cabinet and everything unplug and plug...that being said the iconic was very close and louder then ...it wasn't 3 days later sounded just weird..lost something...sent it back...i was sad...Ive since bought a Randall 100 watt RG1003h...not too shabby $550 blemish..can'tfindablemish..solid state but mt15 was $750 and its my comparable..Randall does great for price comparison so far

I have the Schecter Banshee FR-6, same guitar but 6 strings and it is great. Holds there with other Japanese and American guitars and it is somewhat cheaper. Only think for me is that I wish the neck was wider(43mm).
DSL40CR is also great amp. Only thing is that is has shared EQ.

Most people who complain about affordable gear just don't know how to set it up or have a bad ear for tone .
Tone is subjective ,but some people couldn't dial in a good sound on the most expensive gear .After playing for over 50 years and still owning too much gear ,I've always tried to get the most out of any gear regardless of the price.
    Great video.

Also have the mt15 and the archon MK2 50 W these amps are both killer but when ..I bought the PRS mt100 and I totally sent it back ,there were so many issues with it.. I hated it the crunch Channel and some of my preamp pedals sound better than it ..just my opinion

Idk if this adds to the topic but I desperately want a tonex pedal in place of my EVH 5150iiis el34 100 watt head. Not because I don’t like my amp because I do. I love my evh. But I want to be able to consolidate my entire rig to my pedalboard. I would like to be able to go to a show and not even have to lug around my big ass amp and cab.

Afforable is a term thats very subjective. Affordable for who? That said most people will find the PRS MT15 a better choice over something that costs $1k or more. The Soldano Astro for example, "great for the price" it better be great for $1,600 lol. Like others have said...something thats built in China and costs over $1k is not what I call a good value.

You can definitely buy great sounding gear cheap... and I've bought my fair share of cheap gear only to have much of it fail within a couple years. Mostly pedals though... a couple mixers, cheap microphones, cheap PA, a couple cheap guitars that had bad electronics on arrival, an amp that kept blowing fuses and fixed 3 times under warranty though thankfully. So I stopped buying gear that is TOO cheap. Buy too cheap, buy twice has been true for me over the years.

I hear ya. I definitely have a threshold for how cheap I'll go on gear. It seems that if you get below a certain threshold, it can be disastrous LOL

    Prs snobs are the worst.
But yeah I haven’t ever owned anything crazy. Most expensive guitar I’ve ever owned was probably a thousand bucks and the most expensive amp I’ve ever owned is a black star ht venue 60 watt combo. And I get kickass sounds out of that.
The general consensus is the more expensive stuff (especially guitars) make small differences in tone: I think the snobs shut on cheaper stuff just so they can defend their own purchases. And there is no reason to have to do either of those things.
