I just wanted to say thank you for making a gasket and not slathering the thing if RTV. I could write books on how much I hate RTV.

I aim to please! RTV has its place in some applications, but I try to stick with what the manufacturer designed for. The most common problems I have seen with RTV is 1) not having surfaces clean enough, and 2) using way too much. Usually both simultaneously. One example: Toyota calls out a very specific bead profile for their engines mating surfaces, and I have seen quite a few rebuilds and repairs where oil passages get clogged from squeeze out. The car ends up right back in the shop with VVT-i problems...or worse.

Uh oh! What'd I do??? (to be continued)
You sure know how to bring 'em back for another, don't ya? Getting late here, but I will continue your series on this restore tomorrow. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Haha. It was a good opportunity for a cliff hanger. The next one has a celebratory ending! I need to get the rest of the videos finished. Lately I have been busy sitting behind a computer instead of in the garage, but soon...

'Intergalactic backorder' ...That's a great term.

Morgan Oliff At Toyota, it was the term we used for parts coming from Japan. For example, the last 1991 yellow MR2 door handle on the planet 🤣.

Thanks for calling out WD-40 for what it IS good for! It sure ain't a lubricant. Nice work on the EE! I'll be trying to get a '56 WiaD running next year, and though our drives differ, your videos will be a great reference for any needed repairs

That original motor seemed like a nice unit, glad you decided to put it back in. Your lathe is a work of art, a really beautiful machine. Only gripe is the chuck looks a bit skinny, I would look into getting a beefier chuck installed to give it a more serious look. :)

The chuck shown at the end of this video is a direct mount independent 4 jaw, 8 inch diameter, so yeah, it's a bit of a pancake but in great shape.I have some other chucks. At the end of Part 6 is a Cushman 8 inch 3 jaw. I like it and it's very low runout for a 3 jaw. I also have a worn out 5 inch Cushman, but it has two piece jaws so it is handy for using soft jaws. All of the chucks are rated for 4k rpm. I'd like to buy a new Bison forged 3 jaw with two piece jaws, but they are over $1000! Gator makes a clone of the Bison, but it's not much cheaper. Maybe one day...

    What a beautiful machine!

Thank you! I'm always blown away when guys understand electric. I kinda understand mechanical things, but wires are a total mystery to me! Yea, your neighbors probably wouldn't like that tractor in the yard. I live on 1/2 acre too, but I can fit the lawn tractor in the garage. I gotta get going on that again, lol. I had no idea the Monarch lathe was so complex and cool. I can't wait to see chips flyin.......

Great info. Thanks for sharing. Well spoken and it sounds like you covered all the key points. Where are you located? I have a 13"x40 Taiwan made lathe that I pulled the motor a while ago and may need help to get it wired up again. From what I've seen, your the "Go To Guy". Nice job!Razor!

AHHH!!! Just like mine! Nice going - good testing on the motor. Some of what you were describing about how the new motor was wound went over my head. Like whats a shunt winding? keep em coming!

Just use a treadmill motor like everyone else is, I hear they work great:-))) love the videos, beautiful machine.

+riphaven I have a friend who's messing around with some treadmill motors for giant spinning art projects. The biggest one I've seen is 3hp and I'd have to make an adapter if I want to use back gear. I ended up fixing it all. I may not ever need 5hp, but it's nice to have it! Thanks for the comment.

Not sure how often you make gaskets, but check out the Cricut machine. You can find them in the craft dept at Walmart. Connect it to a computer and make your own gaskets. It also works with vinyl sheet if you need to make custom stick on labels.

***** look online. They start at $75 and go up.

I've made gaskets kind of on the same lines as he did, except I use a small dead blow to tap out the out line. If done right the gasket is cut out by the edge of the flange.

nice job, I've been watching from the first, and must say you are far more patient than I. what hp is that motor?

***** makes the 1hp on my SB K10 seem pretty wimpy. I am amazed at the lack of chipped paint.
after cleaning, it looks new. A real find!
