Most teenagers don’t have posters of Frankenstein on their walls, and The Shape of Water didn’t inspire a raft of other love stories about humanoid fish-men. From Dracula to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Lost Boys to Twilight, it’s the sexy vampire who’s been our favorite supernatural pin-up for centuries, a creature that’s long been associated with the lust for more than just blood. Here’s our Take on the continued allure of the sexy vampire, the roots of this cultural obsession, and why our love for them refuses to die.

Vampire Academy is such a good read. It's puts a new spin on the whole vampire thing but also gives in to the tropes associated with it. The Vampires are just like normal humans, but also alluring, sexy, intoxicating, ugly, evil, and very dangerous. The vampires in Twilight were alluring and dangerous and that made romance with them problematic. That's not an issue in Vampire Academy. Also the author delves into pretty intelligent themes on sexuality for a YA like living in polygamous marginalised societies, giving answers to why women stay in the home and lots of symbolism about slut shaming. Definitely worth a read if you wonder society acts the way it does.

i’m only 7 minutes in ( i will delete this if it does not hold true for the rest of the video) but i had some issues with your take on Dracula. lucy is an ingenue in the book, only bringing up marrying multiple men in terms of not wanting to make her suitors unhappy by rejecting them, and the closest she gets to “open about her desires” is just being clearly in love with arthur. meanwhile, dracula himself generally comes across as less a charming seducer than kind of rape-y. less importantly, the three vampire women he lives with are not identified as sisters. i did like your point about how dracula’s attentions cause lucy to become a “crazed sexual demon” and how the fear of vampires is a fear of sexuality, though.

They are in no way weaker. The way vampires were portrayed in tvd was just kinda bad as it just glorified them. They kinda just cheated to forward the plot. Like the daylight rings and even the fact that they have reflections and don’t have a reaction to crucifixes/crosses. I could go on. @@Hannah-rn7td I am watching Buffy and I’m presently binging it. Giles, Willow, Zander and even Cordelia can kill vampires. For someone really strong Buffy kicked Spike’s ass a lot. The vampires aren’t that strong compared to TVD. And for it being the better show that’s debatable as something like that is subjective. College courses isn’t really a demarcation of it being good, in my book. Buffy is a really good show, love the characters and everything. Since it’s from Buffy POV it makes sense to make the vampires relatively weaker, so they are beatable but TVD is from the Vampires’ POV, hence they have short cuts and are stronger, which actually make more sense(because with their special abilities it’s understandable how they have remain secret) There’s no logical reasons that the vamps in Buffy aren’t public knowledge. So I think TVD has better vampires but I guess it is a subjective debate. But in respect to OG vampire lore Buffy is better at that. Let me also be clear I think for the 2 shows situations their vampires styles make sense, I just prefer the TVD one.

Well, its really not a new thing the idea of the sexy vampire. The vampire most likely originated in the Balkans, in fact the word "vampire" is one of the only serbian words within the modern English language. The vampire was often said to be sexually active, he often scouted out human wives in order to have children. So its really not a new concept of the vampire being a predatory both in a physical and sexual way. Its sad that the origins of the vampire were overlooked. Many people within the south slavic villages still engage in protection rituals against vampires. The belief is still VERY strong. The vampire has always had an allure, there are meant to defile nature.

I think one of the interesting aspects of the Vampire icon is that it often is able to be representative of various dark outside elements of humanity and society. There’s the sexual aspect as explored in this video where vampires are able to be as overtly sexual as they want and indulge in whatever sexual attractions including those of the LGBT+ community. There’s also the vampire as the dark side of power in that not only do their supernatural powers give them great physical strength but vampires are often high ranking elitist socialites who literally feed off of others to make themselves more powerful, and often wanting to make everyone into vampires like them. Hell the dark side of power aspect even relates to the vampires as outsiders given how certain nations have painted themselves as the outsider group while secretly creating corrupt dictatorships that force people to be like them such as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. They can also serve as outsiders of faith and religious values, which of course has become mainstream with the Atheist movement, and one can have good vampires who can show their values while still not believing in religious values, or you can show the dark side of certain atheists who believe their lack of faith makes them smarter or better than those who practice religion(working back into that power allegory). And there’s even the potential allegory of vampires and mental health with the book Carmilla saying vampires are created in instances of suicide, Dracula having a B plot with psychiatrist and recovering addict Dr Seward interviewing the seemingly deranged Renfield, Lucy Westenra going from nice to monstrous like a bipolar victim, and even more PG vampires like Marceline being a recovering victim of years of trauma and loss. There’s a lot of layers to the vampire and it’s why it’s one of my favorite types of monsters

Interesting take. I have to say that I've never cared for vampires as a whole. They were either hypersexualized, or boring (and no, I didn't bother with Twilight). The only instances of vampires I could deal with were Blade, American Horror Story: Hotel (kind of), and the anime "Shiki".
