      Responses like this deserve to be lauded, if not because it is so damn rare these days to encounter people who are capable of simply disagreeing. Political disagreements in 99% of cases, in current day, result in a bare minimum of ad hominem attacks and often escalate to harassment, death threats, maybe even actual violence. So..for you to simply agree to disagree amazes me. There's still hope that discourse isn't dead. Thank you. Thank you so much.

      Indeed. When you have lived your entire life surrounded by liberal college teachers and students, no wonder you'd assume conservatives are racist, greedy bigots. And if you live exclusively surrounded by right wingers, well no wonder you'd think leftists all poor, greedy, lazy nihilists.
      You just need to like, actually know people. And you'll find there's not that much difference between you and them, ultimately...

I was watching The Quartering, and he highlighted some of the comments you had made about the popularity of Manga, which I consider myself a fan of, but only because modern comics seem to want to destroy the stories that we grew up with. Don't forget manga are creator owned. The publisher is strictly the publisher but the author owns the rights to their comics and their characters. With american comics all those zombie franchises are corporate owned, so there's no direct connection to the creator, it's not theirs, they're contract slaves.

That's why you got instances of creators moving their series to other publishers (Famous example: Alita). This is entirely different from the west where you're just a contract worker on commission and you own nothing, because the characters are corporate property. Manga is very much an author thing. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on manga.
    As a Japanese, I would like to point out that in our manga history, female mangakas flourished since its beginning, and probably you already know that so many hit series are done by them.
    And there are almost no taboos in the contents that manga artists create.
    For so many decades, there were mangas that dealt with homosexuality in a very sensitive and positive way, and there were also mangas about hero team of several races.
    I hope that American Comics, like American movies and dramas, some day will be able to handle various genres of content and the public will be able to accept them.

    23:20 This would require things like humility and introspection on the creators part (something the Japanese as a society have a lot of, and we as Americans have very little of) so that ain't happening anytime soon. But I am curious just what is it that Comic Book pros complain about when it comes to manga? The fact that it doesn't use colored pages for the most part? That it has to be read from right to left? Or that mangaka have the FREEDOM to craft the narratives and draw the art they want to with out some holier-than-thou puritans breathing down their neck?

    • @SequentialTreasures
      @SequentialTreasures 3 роки тому +21

      They complain, by their own words, for the last reason you stated. But the REAL reason is that they are successful and have an audience that will support them, while the American comic pros don't have that. That's the true reason for their whining. Well, that and that the Japanese won't inject their toxic political ideologies into their work.

    The real answer to the pouches question was that heroes were always pulling devices and weapons out of somewhere. And Art Adams created longshot. When he created him, he wanted longshot to have these throwing blades. And he didn't just want him pulling them out of nowhere, so he gave him pouches. This was a huge influence on Leifeld who gave Cable a shitload of pouches, because he also used weapons. Also the fact that weapons were becoming a bigger deal in comics because people using superpowers like ice blasts and things like that were kind of boring. The 80s and 90s was the era of sharp things and guns. Longshot had knives. Angel lost his feather wings and got knife wings. Cable had guns and needed places to store ammo.

    I always thought Ultimate Spider-Man worked well cause it was the closest thing to a Marvel manga, not necessarily because of the style but because of the lack of external continuity and the fact that creators stayed the same for a very long run. I think one of the things that ruins comics is the lack of creative direction and that's why my favourite comics are long runs possibly detached somehow from the rest of the continuity, like Punisher MAX or the early Ultimate titles. It just feels different when something happens for the first time in the Ultimate universe compared to it happening for the 50th time in the regular one. That's also why my favourite classic Marvel comics are the ones from the 60s.
    If I had to think of one main difference between mangas and comics I'd say mangas tell stories in chapters like a book and they take way longer to develop characters and stories, while comics are derivative from the times where you could get an entire story arc in 20 pages. That's why you get 12 issue comic runs that fit inside a paperback which is smaller than the first volume of a manga series

      I agree with pretty much everything you wrote. Manga stories are allowed to breathe and creators are allowed to tell the stories they want to write. Marvel books get rebooted yearly and DC will shove odd external stuff in at random, and then there's the ever present threat of retcons and rewrites down the road. You don't have that with manga. Manga are more like traditional book publishing but in a visual episodic form. Comics used to approximate it when a creative team would go for years on the same book and tell a cohesive story but now that doesn't happen. Plus Manga volumes are ~$10 a pop and always have like 200 pages of story. Now manga is usually black and white but overall it's just a better value for your investment of both time and money.

    At this point Marvel and DC are gonna have to hit rock bottom to realize their mistakes, but lets face it they'll never learn. Manga get's it right cause you could read something like Fullmetal Alchemist or Attack on Titan and not be throat punched by an agenda while M and DC just want to shove the same thing over and over and over. I don't care about superheroes I want a story that's different not the same superhero regurgitated through woke frames. I know shits bad, I know we need diversity, but you know what creates diversity? Telling a story that's not about superheroes and instead something different and knew that doesn't push one side or another, but get's you to think or makes you not think it's amazing when you have the choice to think or not think when you read something.

    • @Kuikkamies
      @Kuikkamies 3 роки тому +4

      Not exactly. For a very brief moment during the time 1980s when Chrichton was writing the book, Deinonychys' name was under debate. While the book version isn't accurate to the findings either, Crichton used the name that was valid according to some paleontologists that debated that Deino was a Velociraptor. However, by the time the movie was being developed, the issue had been solved and Deinonychys was being given its own separate name from the Velociraptor. Crichton and Spielberg knew this, and after some discussion, they decided to go with Velociraptor nevertheless because the name and description simply were better in their view. As much as Jurassic Park gets a bad rap nowadays for its scientific inaccuracies, Crichton did try to make it as grounded as possible as understood at the time of the writing of the book.

From borderline illegal sexual deviations to wholesome little stories about the simples joys of life,like the fishing one chuck mentioned. American comics are extremelly limited in this aspect. There is NOT something for everybody. In fact,touching some subjects that manga touches would be a gigantic no no from comic readers,or even considered boring or "meme-ish" and read ironically.. Another thing that makes manga stand out is the lack of "responsability with reality" and agenda. No i don't care about politics,real world issues or whatever. We just want good storytelling and not stuff overloaded with politics, it's like most of these writers are really just activists. We want to escape from real life and not deal with some of the stuff we are seeing in the entertainment lately. I haven't gotten into manga as much but I have been watching a lot of anime recently heavy and I'm really enjoying it. I really don't know where to start in manga outside of Berserk I hear that's a great one to get, I'm super green to that stuff right now.

      As you said, we want escapism and entertainment. Currently these writers all see comic books as simply another platform and these characters as self-insert avatars for their politics. This is precisely what the japanese avoid and why american comics are circling the drain.

      I'd say the closest thing to the doujinshi scene in the US is actually webcomics. The US is so spread out that it's hard to have giant in-person sales like Comiket and other Japanese conventions. American conventions have some sales places for independent artists but they're kind of a side show or afterthought.

    GL/GA had nice Neal Adams art but I've always felt the stories were preachy. They have NOT aged well and it's particularly annoying for people who like the Hal Jordan character.
    I despise preachy at least as much as "woke." Different sides of the same coin!
    GL/GA also did tremendous damage to both Hal Jordan/GL and Oliver Queen/GA.
    To his credit, O'Neil portrayed Queen as very flawed and far from the perfect "father figure" with regards to the way he reacted to Speedy's drug addiction. Still felt more than a bit over the top and very unsympathetic. The unfortunate impact of this is that Green Arrow is generally portrayed as contrarian for the sake of it with a bit of diddling jerk added to the side. At this point, he's had 2 kids out of wedlock but I no longer think that Connor Hawke and the baby are in continuity!
    **
    GL was so badly damaged. At one point in the 1960s, I read that he was DC's best-selling character after Superman. GL was made the strawman in a time when the anti-authoritarians were liberals as opposed to today's "liberal/progs" who defend the establishment at all costs.
    I have one or two of these stories in DC reprint collections but I've felt no desire to add the full reprint collection of GL/GA to my comics library.
    The run comes back into reprint every 10 years. I'm sure it never sells that well... At best, it's a mediocre run.
