I have watched HUNDREDS of videos on calligraphy -this is the best by far. ATTN: to anyone who wants a comprehensive video on the wonderful art of calligraphy, look no further, this is the best of the best. 🖋✒️🖌✒️
Thank you SO much for your very kind feedback! We spent a lot of time on this tutorial series to make it as comprehensive as possible, especially for beginners! Currently we are working on a Majuscules video series, so stay tuned for that :)
Joanne is right. This is the best and most comprehensive video on calligraphy I’ve seen.
WOW!!! I feel as if I found a Gold mine. I am thinking of learning Calligraphy and went through few videos and then I found your video. I just love it. Unlike other videos you talk so slowly and softly that alone feels very calm and soothing. The best thing is that you explain it so well. I had to Subscribe it. THANK YOU very much.
I have watched several tutorials tonight on you tube about Calligraphy. I saw Jordan Moran's beginning video and was very happy with her video, but I saw that you actually teach it. YOUR a VERY GOOD INSTRUCTOR and one that I can follow. The BEST I have seen so far, and your the one I want to teach me. I have wanted to do this for yrs..Thank you for putting the supplies needed under your video..I will be buying them so I can follow along. .I want to learn how to write my name, and my husb and kids. I am a card maker and have been for over 20+ yrs. I would love to put my own sentiments in calligraphy in my cards instead of using stamps...Thank you again so very much...
Great tutorial!! Thank you for what you've done!! #KeepWriting #CalligraphyMasters 💗😍🙏
I just discovered you video. I must say, you are a gifted teacher. It is a pleasure to watch and hear your clear presentation. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your talent and passion. I am inspired!
Thank you so much for your feedback!! Hearing words like yours mean so much. xoxo
Your videos are very precise…I certainly will be following these…thank you.
Got my Osprey Pens with their Zebra G setup & it's great! After doing my review I want to learn copper plate to really take advantage of the pen. This vid is perfect! Will be watching many more! 👍
Please give classes on this. You are the perfect teacher.
Just found these tutorials! These are much better than the physical classes I took on calligraphy! Thanks for your wonderful videos and teaching methods!
I have learned faux calligraphy because of you now it's time for copperplate Thank you so much
This is the best tutorial! Thanks for being through and not being a showoff. Love from Bangladesh ❤️
Thanks for the free content.... Its nice of you to be gracious to share it free
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Loved how you clearly you explained the angle and basic strokes.
You're welcome! We love explaining things in detail. Thanks for watching :)
Love love love! I don't have this kind of pen yet but your videos really inspires me a lot like it's literally telling me "I can do the same." Simple yet very easy to understand and to follow! Thank you for this loveleighloops! You made a begginer's day again. ❤❤❤
Thanks for all of your positive comments!! You should definitely try using a pointed pen, I think you'd be great at it!
Congratulations! You have a very didactic approach.
Without a doubt, they are the best tutorials I have found. Thank you very much for sharing excellent work.
Thank you for posting this video that explains everything in such a clear and simple manner that even a beginner like me can understand. I like the way you explain the basic strokes and how important it is to get those down. And the way you go over the nomenclature of the writing instrument. As a beginner, I couldn't figure out how the artists in some of the other videos were making some of the lines thin and some of the lines thick. I watched many videos before I stumbled upon your video (which is the best one I found so far). I think I might try my hand at learning calligraphy and collect some of the things needed to get started. Again, thank you so much for posting this.

Very well explained!
AMAZING CALLIGRAPHY!!!
Excellent. Very helpful
This is what I am searching for the last two weeks
Thankyou Loveleigh Loops
Thanks very much for a really great video, and giving really careful explanations. From a new subscriber in England. X
You´re right Joanne Labelle!! Finally a video, that actually shows and IS explaned, how, what, why must be done, drawn to make that type of Calligraphy work!! Finally, I´ve found you!! Thanks a lot, for having made such a video for all of us!! :-)
I have to say this is the most in-depth, professional and insightful video I have seen. Others do not even come close thank you for taking the time to create this video you have been extremely helpful to at least one person and I’m extremely appreciative
As an absolute beginner, have to say.....this gal is a born communicator/educator! 🎉☺️🥰
LOVED the vid!!!
Your content is amazing. I really enjoy your content
You are the Best .. to the point yet detailed wherever needed .. may your channel grow exponentially .. :)
great instruction video. Thx for making it and sharing ur knowledge.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. You're goddess for doing such benevolent work for us, peasants.
I've dabbled with cartridge pens with broad nibs in the past, but really have always wanted to start using my dip pen (had one for years...been awfully intimidated by it) and copperplate seems the way to go. I think I'll be going with the English Roundhand variant. I really liked this introductory video. It highlighted very clearly why the fundamentals are so necessary. I'll be checking out the rest. Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing, Jeremiah! And yes you are absolutely correct - learning the fundamentals is the most important part. Once you have a solid foundation, you will understand everything that follows even better, and you will be able to progress even more quickly. Thanks for the comment and good luck with copperplate! :)
Thank you mam 😍
Wow this is such an amazing video .....it has helped me so much , thank you for making this video
Thank you so much!
Very Nice explanation 👍👍
Nice Info!
An oblique holder is usually for Spencerian rather than copperplate. A lot of master scribes have told me that. I am an amateur calligrapher only though.
Una voz verdaderamente hermosa.
Love this! I started practicing calligraphy a year ago, but very scarcely and now I'm trying to actually get into it. These videos so far are very well explained!
I am a beginner in copperplate lettering. As I am watching this, it's all very similar to learning brush lettering, correct? The basic strokes are very much the same. Maybe this won't be as difficult as I thought. Thank you for making these videos. They're brilliant!
Sheila Lewis-Lorum yes, you are correct!! The basic strokes and letter formation are very similar. In fact, we teach Brush Lettering by following the rules of Copperplate. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your lettering! Let us know if we can help!:)
Thank you for this series! Where did you get the second ink holder in the wooden block? Do we have to make them ourselves?
You can make one, or you can get them at Paper & Ink Arts: www.paperinkarts.com/dinkylg1.html
The best video
A lot of good fundamentals. However, I've never seen anyone write with an oblique holder without turning their paper so the nib lines up with the slope. Keeping the paper flat causes the nib to be pulled down the paper at an awkward angle. I just put that out there in case any new calligraphers see the video and want to learn a more traditional way. I believe Joe Vitolo has a video on how to line up your pen, nib, and paper. Best wishes to all who pursue this beautiful lettering style.
Yes- excellent point! Something I forgot to mention in the video is that the paper is rotated, but so is the camera, so the paper appears straight even though it's angled. Also, the nib should line up with the slant line as you mentioned. If the camera was overhead it would show the same slant, but because of how the pen is oriented in relation to the camera, it appears off slant. Thanks so much for your comment!
Does anyone have suggestions for a good brand of calligraphy pens, nibs, and ink
Thank you
where did you get your ink bottle and holder? Ive searched all over and can't find anything similar.
Super🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey!
I got a problem. My writing style has some characters some lines of which going upward have to be broader than just a thin line. Does it mean I wont be able to use a fountain pen? Are there any nibs that let you make broad lines even when you make upgoing lines?
May i ask if the same pen can be used if yr left handed 🤔
I am sooo excited to Watch all of your Tutorials.... "Thank YOU" so much for explaining in detail, how to do this... You are a Great Teacher... ;)
Judi Christopher your comment means so much - thanks!! Hope you enjoy the videos!:)
(Smile) ... "Excuse me Ma'am... I am watching a very informative, enthusiastic, phenomenal teacher (YOU)... I am sitting here watching # 2 of 7.... so sorry I can not chat right now... I am learning about Copperplate Calligraphy... (I'll see you at the other video.... ) lol... I can't help it ... I'm an Acting Teacher...
How do I understand the degrees ?
You should print out calligraphy practice sheets
Practice strokes with the angled lines until you’re comfortable without them
Very informative video... specially that strokes and names of lines that is base head ascender descender...
Can you please say what's the height in cm for the "x height" .
How much is the gap between b and h... Please reply... Thank you
Great tutorial. Do you have a video about practice paper? I have 2 booklets of practice paper and they are different from each other.
Thanks! This lesson gives some paper recommendations (and a supplies overview): loveleighloops.teachable.com/courses/calligraphy-on-point/lectures/5314437
love to you take care love
Thank you so much....great!!!!.......plz tell me what kind of pen your using....I'm very interested but I don't anything about pens and inks...plz tell me...
Thanks! All of the supplies use (including links) are in the description of this video
Hello Loveleigh Loops, Thanks for your video but can I ask you that? How distance between baseline and headerline? Thank you
Tran Huy I think the spacing I used was 7mm between baseline and headerline. If you go to www.loveleighloops.com you can download these strokes and print them out!
Hello! Thanks for explaining so nicely. It really helps a lot.
But can u please tell that what type of paper should we use and where to get it .
Hello! I used HP Premium 32lb paper in this video. Here's our supply guide with links to Amazon: loveleighloops.teachable.com/courses/347372/lectures/5314437
hello!
I realise when i try to write an upward stroke, there is little to no ink coming out, is it the angle of the pen that needs to be change?
I'm using zebra g titanium nib.
Hello! You can try changing the angle of the pen relative to the paper. I usually have about 45 degree angle between the nib and paper if you look at it from the side. You can also try "gliding" upward and make sure you're not applying pressure when you go up. Or, if your ink is too thick, that could be contributing to the issue. Hopefully one of those suggestions helps!
Thanks. You actually teach instead of just showcase.

Can you recommend what type of pens and inks are best to use for beginners? also what type of paper I can use to start with?
Hello! If you go to bit.ly/LLWishlist, you will get a PDF with all of our top recommended supplies for beginners including links to order them online!
Gracias por compartir la hoja de ejercicios.
Thank you sooo much!! I learned a lot!! Would that nib work for a lefty?
Hi again, I just put almost everything in my basket. Can you tell me where to get the Calligraphy slanted grid paper that you learn Calligraphy on, as shown in Jordan Moran's video. I don't believe she had it listed. Thank you so much..I subscribed and THUMBS UP!
victoria ciolek Thank you so much for your nice comments! We're so glad you find our videos valuable. The guidesheets can be found for free here: www.iampeth.com/sites/iampeth.com/files/public_files/guidelines_letter_0.pdf
We usually use the 7mm size. Best of luck and let us know if you have any more questions!
Thank you. I haven't been asleep yet. it is 6:30 am here. so as soon as I add the grid paper to my supply list I am off to bed. THANK YOU, I can't wait to learn... PS Thank you I just copied it and downloaded it in case I need more.. :)
You can do either way, but we usually recommend starting larger so that you can see everything with lots of detail. Then once you get more comfortable, you can start using the smaller guidelines
I really appreciate this series, this is by far the best intro to calligraphy
Thank you so much!! We wanted to make it the most comprehensive intro as possible, so we are glad that you have found it valuable.
I loved this! I really want to try calligraphy, do you know what are the essentials when starting? I’m a bit lost with pens and nibs!
Hello! We have a free supply guide that will answer your questions :) Download it here: www.loveleighloops.com/supply-guide
excellent tutorials. you mind sharing w us what type of nibs you're using in this particular tutorial? thank you.
Elna Loberiano hello! Thanks for the comment! This is a Hunt 101 nib :)
We have this nib and our favorite inks in our amazon collection: Amazon.com/shop/LoveleighLoops if you’re interested!
Great video, great tutorial aaaand great voice. You remember me to EVA from c&c series. Sry for the nerd post btw :P
Thanks for your comment! I'm not sure what C&C is but no need to apologize! :)
Thank you for the fundamentals of the calligraphy you've shared with us, who were ashamed, due to terrible handwriting, which followed us (at least me) whole my life....
03:05 - 55 degrees - very interesting feature... I have a picture in my mind, of the monk in 15th century, who rewrites a text during the night, while having only a single candle on the right corner of the angled desk, where the shadow of his pen was the guidance that he follows, which, I believe, is the most critical part of the uniformity of the calligraphy in order to avoid the "dunk letters", although of the same size.
Cheers!
I know you probably weren't meaning to do this, but this is definitely in a category of ASMR. If you don't already do it, you should start an ASMR calligraphy channel. I think it will do very well!!
While that wasn't the purpose of the video, I could see how it could be relaxing to watch! Thank you!
Thanks for the great tutorial video! And I'm curious about the x-height for practicing. Is the x-height would be different when using different nibs?
Hello! The x-height used for this tutorial was 7mm which is great for practicing because it is large enough so that you can see details of each stroke, but not too big. If you have a more flexible nib (like a hunt 101), you can use a larger x-height; if you use a very small x-height with a flexible nib, the thick lines will over power the shape of the letters. Whenever I am writing very small, I use a less flexible one like the Nikko G. Thanks for the feedback and for your question!
Is there any difference between pointed pen and split nib pen??... Please say... Thank you 💟
When I am drawing the letters my pen nib is catching on the paper causing a misshaped letter. How can I prevent this from happening? Do I need to polish the point?
588158 what type of nib are you using? If the nib is sharp like a Hunt 101, you might be pressing down too hard
The pen nibs are made by Mitchell Graphics Ltd. They are elbow Oblique shaped and meant to fit in a straight pen holder. I bought them many years ago.
Thank you for you reply. After reading a bit I think maybe my problem is that my nib may be too flexible and I need to move to one that is less flexible. Thanks again.
Can it be done left handed?
Is there any differences for lefties? My pen sounds very scratchy when I write and I feel that the angle is a little awkward 😅
Depending on how you hold your pen, a straight holder (instead of an oblique holder) might be easier to use!
I have a question plz! What kind of pin do u using in this video? And what kind of ink ? Cuz I seen a big bottle of ink , I would like to use it...
Hello! Here are the supplies:
Nib: Hunt 101
Ink: Sumi
Paper: HP Premium 32lb
Guide sheet: loveleighloops.com/copguidesheet
Supply Guide (with links): loveleighloops.com/cop-supply-guide
Is that what you mean hppaper.com/na/product/hp-premium-choice-laser-paper/ ya ?
I have a straight nib holder with a Nikko G pointed nib, can the lessons be done with a straight holder? I’m waiting to order one until after I move.
Yes, you can do this with a straight holder! Your hand will just be at a different angle. But the concepts and shading will be the same
Where do you get the guide sheet for copperplate calligraphy?
Hello! Here are some options specific to Copperplate: www.iampeth.com/sites/iampeth.com/files/public_files/guidelines_letter_0.pdf
We also offer more at: bit.ly/freeguidesheets
Whats the name of the pen???
hey can i use a normal pen? Like not at an angle? It makes big difference?
Hello! For this style of calligraphy, a pointed pen is recommended.
If you'd like to use a normal/monoline pen, you can do faux calligraphy. Here's our free course about that! loveleighloops.teachable.com/p/faux-real-calligraphy
Nice
I notice that your nib is angled to 55 degrees as you write. I am a lefty and I am not sure what angle my nib should be. I have both the oblique (right handed) and straight pen holders. Any suggestions?
Hello! As a lefty, the angle of your nib should still be at 55 degrees. You can use either a straight or oblique holder. I'd suggest trying both, hold the pen how it feels comfortable, then notice the angle of the nib and turn your paper accordingly. Hope that helps!
I'm downloading the free guide sheets. Only problem is I don't know exactly what guide sheet to should I use, landscape, large or medium or portrait, small or medium? Please help!
For Copperplate, the Medium guidelines will probably work best. Portrait/landscape is your personal preference - if you can't decide, use portrait :)
At what distance are slanting lines drawn in guide sheet
We generally use the same distance that's between the horizontal lines for the slant lines
Can you guide me as to the best pen nib for Copperplate? I am a brand new beginner.
Right now I'm learning modern through The Happy Ever Crafter course, taught by Becca, and during the supplies breakdown, it was all about preference.
Pointed pen was mentioned as being really difficult, but once mastered, brush pen would be a breeze.
Nib should be flexible and pointed, but some can be less flexible, easier for beginner. Nikko G and Zebra G nibs were said to be popular for beginners. Speedball holders were mentioned as inexpensive and good for beginner. There are oblique and straight holders (speedballs come in both varieties). In video we see oblique, which holds the nib at an angle.
I imagine brush pen would be fine, because it involves the same light/hard pressure as pointed pen. Becca mentioned her favorite recommendation was Tombow Fudenosuke. Also, soft tip would be harder and hard tip easier. There are different sizes so for Becca's course we print the according workbook.
Whichever writing tool you use impacts the quality/type of paper you need.
Perspective from beginner in modern calligraphy, so take what I've said as you will.
Which pen is this
I'm left-handed. Do you have any tips for doing pointed pen and getting this 55 degree angle?
Celestial Aurora hello! You could try using a straight holder instead of oblique. I would also recommend rotating the paper and experiment with different ways of rotating based on how it’s most comfortable to hold your pen. Good luck!
