I’ve always loved John’s reviews…and I still go back and check out his videos…a great man and friend to all in the YTPC. RIP John 🙏
One of the things I loved about John was his descriptions of the tobacco blends. This is such a great description of Plum Pudding. Only a seasoned pipe smoker has the talent.
I started watching John in May of 2019 after I purchased my first quality pipe, a Peterson Dublin Filter XL02 Ball Bent. Later he passed away, and I really had no idea how much he was loved by all of his viewers. Then I saw that Pipe Nook had contracted 860 Commemorative Friday's Savinelli's in John's honor. That's when I realized I had missed out on something great. I started watching John's videos. To me, he appears to be the Mr. Rogers of Pipe Smokers, except with a pipe and tobacco rather than a sweater and sneekers. I'm hoping by watching his videos and leaving likes, it may help to generate revenue for his family. If you wish to get an idea of what John was like, watch his videos entitled, "The Ice Cream Freezer, and another one entitled The Rubber Couch." Also, if your new to pipe smoking, watch Muttnchop Piper. New pipe smokers need a mentor, and he's the one. Otherwise, you'll smoke your expensive pipe a few time then toss it out without knowing why, or what you've missed. Muttnchop Piper's explantion of how a fireplace works, is invaluable information for a new pipe smoker. I'll leave it at that, for now..
I miss this Fellow. Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry!
these videos from Mr. Harden are always so comforting! R.I.P.
Miss these reviews....R I P Matches...❤ 🙏
Looks like you're sitting inside a Bob Ross painting. I dig the new intro. It's a keeper.
Prole Feed I tried a few different backdrops and liked this one even though it placed me on the left side of the screen...change is a good thing they say!
I know your gone from us and I had only met you through these videos, but I have enjoyed your talks so much.
If I were a kid growing up again I would love to have a dad or uncle like you and go for walks and listen to your stories and smell the pipe smoke. Only a man with a pipe can fit into nature so suitably and perfectly😉
While that sounds ideal, there is a fairly common distancing between Dads and sons especially while growing up, however, I will thank you for the pleasant thought.
Hello John,
Great video, absolutely a beautiful spot to enjoy a bowl. Love the birds in the background.
I love Plum Pudding, certainly one of my favourites, something about it makes me think of candy. LOL
Hope all is well, great to see you.
Regards
Mark
The most beautiful scenery yet, John. And that pace of yours is so relaxing. Does me a world of good.
Tempting review, so I'll probably go ahead and order some. Because of the wife I'll have to eat it rather than smoke it ... fortunately it's a crumble cake. Those thick mult-colored slabs make my mouth water every time. Cheers, Mark
Hi John,
what a beautiful spot to smoke a pipe, once again. I happen to have a sample of Plum Pudding lying around which made its way across the pond to Germany. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea on the first smoke, but mainly because I had real trouble keeping it lit.I have no Idea, why! ;-) Thanks for reminding me, to try this out again.
Oh, and the intro is just perfect for you.
Have a great time,
Tobias
Looks awesome John! Great video, as always! Thanks for the shoutout!
Joseph Hein And thanks for the intro., it was a great hit as you can see!
Matches,
I just subscribed to the channel. I really love your videos. Thanks for the knowledge and insight. Also, I love the new graphic opening! Nice work Joseph.
Clayton Douglas Thank you Clayton! As I always say, doing the videos force me to get out and relax while having a bowl...it's very refreshing!
I haven't tried Plum Pudding yet but it's at the top of my list. Terrific backdrop to your video, reminds me of Canada. Always good to hear from you, sir!
***** Really glad I got the opportunity to try this. I wonder how many killer blends slip past us?
I loves me some Plum Pudding!! One of my favorites. It Made my Top 7 List of 2014. Excellent intro, too.
hauntedtank75 I used to do a tobacco list until I found out I like just about everything LOL. Even today, I'd have a rough time putting favorites in order.
Yeah, it's definitely getting tough for me. There are very few tobaccos I've tried that I've just said, "Never Again!" Even ones I've shelved indefinitely, I sometimes find myself thinking about them and saying to myself, "well...."
Love the intro. Classy like you. Thanks to whomever hooked you up. Can't think of another more deserving. Cheers!
Unorthodox Piper Pipedprepper is a great guy! Thankfully he had a huge bag of this LOL.
I was referring to the fella who hooked you up with the sweet little intro.
Unorthodox Piper Ahhh yes! That would be Joseph Hein, and I can't thank him enough...I hope he got an A+ in his graphics class!
Matches860 I do okay ;)
It's great to hear you had your first YT meet up. With my limited experience, I've found it to be a great experience. And I love the quote "I'm not prepared to review this, but I'm going to do it anyway". Haha. I feel that way all the time :)
Public Piper A very pleasant evening indeed! Oh reviews! I really need to come up with another term for my rambling while smoking LOL.
Cool intro. I must be a "water baby", I get excited when I see a river or stream. Fishing.
Beautiful place. Looks like a perfect place to smoke a pipe. I'm gonna have to try plum pudding. I really like Mississippi river. Only Seattle pipe club blend I've tried. Another good video.
+sasquatch Very good stuff, but I over did it and wasn't quite the same until late autumn LOL. I'm still not ready for any full-time English blends.
Always enjoy your little tours of the area. Occasional tobacco component confusion just proves you're human!
Kernicus Rax LOL, I had the two shout outs to remember...at least I got those right!
Matches...had some myself and Mississippi River... Both awesome... Great spot there would be doing some kayaking you definitely find great spots!..... Great as always thanks
+Pipes And kayaks I'm not sure if this was the video or another one...I got to the spot all ready to film and two kayakers were messing around just offshore from me...it felt like I waited an hour for them to leave LOL.
Moin moin John,
as always a nice, quiet video in a beautiful landscape.
To to this perfect video, you created a gorgeous intro. Thank You!
Wish You all the best
Wolfgang
Haas always, you give a good video. You, Northwest piper, Birdman,Smoking pipe Padre and others. All of them are just a delight to watch because you bring me to your big surroundings.
Ralph Burns I'm beginning to figure out that when I travel to a remote spot, it means I need it bad LOL.
that's awesome it looks like a fabulous place to do some kayaking like myself you seem to have a knack for picking great spots to have a smoke and find some peace really nice looking spot got a few of those around here as well have a good day and thank you
+Pipes And kayaks Quite honestly, I'd probably never go out to these places if it weren't for making videos...Oh my, how much I'd be missing!
No question about that..
John,
Never smoked Plum Pudding. Sounds interesting. Great job on showing the countryside in your neck of the woods.
Glen M I'm down towards the end of the Plum Pudding and will most likely order some more...it is very good!
Definitely a solid intro. I am a fan of the PP, though I am not big on the crumble cake format. Fusiliers Ration has become one of my new favorites and it is in that format and it is somewhat difficult to work with. Doesnt stop me though. Beautiful setting. Thanks.
Colin Kelly Ahhh Fusiliers Ration! Yes!
Great review John. I am going to have to find a place by a river to smoke, it seems so relaxing..be well, Bill
Phillypipesmoker Hi Bill! Saw your recent video last night but had nothing of substance to offer. I am a sucker for gadgets/multitools myself!
Ya that's how I've been. Mostly burley based blends for me. Like haunted bookshop. I can smoke that one all the time.
Been watching your videos for several months. Always interesting. (This is my first YT comment ever.)
PNWesty Thanks for taking the time to watch & comment!
Love the nature here!
+Adil Nizami Me too! There's a little bit of everything at this spot.
Beautiful pipe, I also am enjoying SPC, plum pudding is very tasty.
I'm about due to revisit it, but I'll take it much easier this time around!
Love the intro Pipes and Ponderance more poetry from Matches! Great review as well
I definitely enjoy some Plum Pudding. When I was still up north, my winter time go to was Plum Pudding in the morning and Mississippi River after lunch. Now that I've gotten to that Northwoods, that could be different! Can't beat English with some cavendish.
David O'Doherty Yeah, I make a Northwoods facsimile that I smoke often...great stuff!
Matches860 what ratio do you mix your Northwoods? I was going to order the 'make your own' bulk blend from Pipes and Cigars and try to replicate.
David O'Doherty Equal parts of red virginia, sweet black cavendish, and latakia. I call that CT woods which is pretty close.
Is it just me or have the prices of all the Seattle PC blends gone up on Pipes and Cigars.com? They also don't have Mississippi River in bulk anymore?
Joseph Godwin Charlotte, NC
I look for your videos every week and enjoy them. My wife was born in Hartford and has relatives in the area. I like to tell her when you go to different sites. I like to hear the airplanes going to Bradley Field because over the years I've gone in there and its a familiar place. Thanks very much.
Joe Godwin Believe it or not Joe, I headed up to Bradley after filming this. There is a discount tobacco shop across from the airport. I grabbed breakfast at McDonalds and headed for my favorite plane viewing area only to find that the state has fenced it off...BOOOO! BTW, Charlotte's airport is one of my favorites.
Matches860 Hey I live in Charlotte! Next time you're down this way, give me a holler!
+Joseph Hein if ya'll make it up to Raleigh, Public Piper and I are up here. Give one of us a shout if you come up, we'll all get together for a few bowls.
Thank you so much for this review. I purchased a tin based on your positive commentary and I love it!!!! This is going to be in my top 5 Im going to try Haunted Bookshop I'll report back and share what I think.
Fair warning, HB is at the other end of the flavor spectrum, but it's a great everyday smoke. Glad you enjoyed the Plum Pudding!
Greetings from New York...
Classy Intro. John. I just thought to myself....hey, I think I'll have a bowl of plum pudding when I get home! When I searched for the jar, It had about enough in it for 2 bowls! So you actually did me a favor mentioning it because now I need to order more before I run out! Good to see you as always! Be well....
Smokin' Briar I really like it Mike, I should have known that you smoked it...you seem to have a magic palate for fine blends.
Matches860 shoot....I still smoke captain black white from time to time LOL!
Smokin' Briar Smoke what ya' like!
Perfect intro video! Very classy!
Scot Kimel I'm so happy with the intro. and you'll see it again for sure.
The intro is fantastic !! As a designer I dig the colors and the style.
ThePipeMonk Yeah, I really like it and plan to put it to good use!
Awesome intro. I'm only just figuring out how to stitch two videos together on iMovie, which is uploading at the moment, so we'll see if this Luddite can actually even get that far!
Moin John,
I like your new intro. :-)
Plum Pudding? I never heard of it, before.
Concerning the watermark: I also like this HDR-style (same as mine) and yours really came out great!
Thanks for your review! :-)
Yesterday, I smoked some _McClelland's Grey Havens_ which might be an excellent smoke for your as it is based on Burley tobacco. A little strong at the beginning, sweeter after about half an hour with an awesome natural chocolate aroma.
Have a great time!
Cheers
Lars
Grey Havens is a great blend!
Grey Havens is good ! I like the Honeydew as well .
Great spot. CT is so beautiful (except Hartford lol). I just got some Plum Pudding last week and found it to be delicious. I'm still trying to get the moisture level right. So it's been hard to keep lit.
A truly fantastic blend! Not all of Hartford is bad, but I normally drive away from it as opposed to towards it LOL.
Haven't yet tried Plum Pudding and I live in the Pacific Northwest. *facepalm*
I've gotta pick some up ASAP, sounds quite good.
Plumb Pudding has been my absolute favorite since the first time I tried it. Glad someone as well known as you completely agrees with me. ;)
A fantastic creation for sure!
We should all call ourselves "Pipe Ponderers" now.
TheEltopian I do believe you are correct Dale, we are great thinkers huh?
Matches860 I think we are great thinkers. Not sure. Will have to ponder that a bit.
John- I still love this intro/music/graphic the best lol. But I do Like how it should play after you give your famous spoken intro then roll graphics and music like you do now. Whoever did this for you, nice job! 👍
A few years back I started to make enough off the videos to reinvest it, so I paid a graphic artist to do it thinking it would pay off at some point. I rehired him for the newer intro. you see today.
That is the only one out of the 3 you mentioned that I've smoked. I like it but, a bit too "Latakia" for my tastes. Still, objectively, an excellent blend. I keep a couple of ounces constantly aging as I really like it after the Latakia calms down. A year in a mason jar seems to be right for me.
DannoCrutch I guess after Pirate Kake, this seems like almost no latakia to me LOL. I can only imagine what age would do to this, it's already melded as far as I can taste.
Matches860 Yea, it mellows a lot. I Love the flavor of Latakia but, it gives me a headache! So, I only smoke occasionally. Never smoked Pirate Kake, afaik. I love GLP Westminster for it's balance too. 3 Oaks Syrian is another one I really like. Wonder how those compare to the ones you mentioned.
DannoCrutch Bow Legged Bear is heavy on the latakia. Night Train has no latakia but has an unusual complexity. Pirate Kake nearly kills me, so don't try it!
very nice vid Mr.Matches......whats the review about plum something?
I am pretty fond of Seattle pipe club blends I often smoke Pum Pudding, however their Mississippi blend is alright but I have to be in the mood for it. My favorite of the tobaccos is Seattle evening, wish it came in bulk, I really enjoy the flavor and smoothness I am eager to try Deception pass a new blend that has been released recently. You mentioned Boswells; where is this located in the Northeast? I would like to find a good tobacco store instead of mail order. there doesn't seem to be many near Albany the one I had frequented moved to PA to be mail order.
Powder River Boswell's is also in Pennsylvannia. I'm not familiar with the Albany area at all...only drove through once years ago.
Plum pudding is delightful, I agree. Love your new intro!
xGORRIT Many thanks my friend!
While it's much easier to upload a start to finish video, you lose the creativity aspect so I guess it's worth running it through software to tie up the loose pieces LOL.
Great vid Matches. I liked it. Thanks.
Thank you C.D.!
Great intro! You should keep it!
Tjoris For sure, I've tried doing my own in the past and I just don't have the artistic flair!
on my to try list for sure, thanks for the good review.
Love this Balkan. Very well balanced, Cracking location to smoke it too!
swanseajack1908 Cracking location for sure! Lake,fields,woods...it has it all!
Awesome intro. Elegant.
sinchi558 Yeah, I really am glad to have received it!
Nice review, BTW I love that new intro.
Great blend - Cool intro - Thanks for sharing
Big Al The Crusher My thanks to you Big Al for watching!
I'm smoking my first bowl of plum pudding right now, I don't know if it's me or the batch but I can't taste anything hardly. Is it just really subtle?
Hey :-)
the intro is awesome. i really like it :-)
Etienne
Elsterschamane I do believe it fits my style like a glove!
absolutely
I like your take on plum pudding :)
Awesome view.
Greetings,, Kitty.
Good stuff!
Nice pipe. good tobacco. Beware the nicotine kick, you might look at your compass south.
+Pedro Moreno Valenzuela I didn't mind the nicotine, but after smoking it, I didn't want anything with latakia for quite some time!
Very complex blend matches, I went through a tin a couple months ago. I have an unopened tin in my tobacco bag, and when I gently shake the tin it sounds like rocks!?
Yes, it really is complex! I learned that this is a blend to smoke only now & then, for me anyway. Boy, did I ever burn out on this stuff!
good stuff review the miss river
New intros really cool.
Bryce McRae He did a fantastic job on it!
I'd say so. Very professional.
Good to see you again my friend!!
Jared TruckinPiper Thanks for joining me!
Just to make sure, he wasn't talking about mixing the bowl with different blends. He meant one single pipe for one single blend!
+Frank Gee No need of it. There are well over 2000 blends available...what do you do if you want to sample a blend, buy a new pipe? LOL
Of course he just wanted me to buy a new pipe
Big lake near you eh? Do you get a lot of mosquitoes this time of year? With all these shout outs its starting to feel like the old Matches Moments. I've still yet to try Plum Pudding. Thanks for the review and tour.
Nice intro john!!
marty messina Thanks Marty, I really like it myself!
Great video!! Your smoking locations are amazing, hoping to load a couple of videos soon here in sunny Great Britain. What's your thought on Deep Hollow? ATB
howard lee It's been many years but I still have the empty tin of Deep Hollow. I thoroughly enjoyed it, just never got around to buying it again...as is the case with so many!
Hi John: Great spot for a video, and I love the new intro. Just on a different tobacco theme; I noticed that Lane Limited has released "Ready Rubbed". This is supposed to be the same formula as Edgeworth. Even in the same blue can. That was my fathers favorite. Have you tried this new one, or heard anything about it? Thanks, and keep enjoying this beautiful weather. All the best. Ed
GrandpaCavendish Ed, I read about that and would like to get some. Whenever I used to tire of Carter Hall back in the day, I'd get a tub of Edgeworth. I do miss it! Great to see you!
Hey matches, quick question. I’m fairly new to pipe smoking and I’ve herd you can mix certain blends. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to mix some plum pudding special reserve and some nightcap together. I enjoy both but I need that kick like nightcap
Hi Josh, you can mix whatever you wish! As a rule, you might want to think about mixing a bland burley blend with a heavy English which would tone down the English and perk up the Burley. Nightcap & Plum Pudding sounds like a heart stopper LOL.
Matches860 thank you much and I appreciate the advice. I love watching your videos by the way. A lot of pipe knowledge I’ve learned from you so again I thank you
Your points of view are interesting.
I enjoy your times in the woods. 860 is that an area code?
I'm usually most relaxed in the woods and yes, 860 is my phone area code.
Great video as always.
Very nice spot your in .
Plum pudding is great stuff...good review. Have you ever smoked Blue mountain or as its called now Balkan Blue?
+Gwaur44 Haven't had Blue Mountain but am familiar with it...I'm still kind of staying away from English & latakias after smoking too much of it last summer LOL.
Magic location, the background and the wonderful serenity of the bird noise idyllic for a nice bowl ... the one thing always intriques me is the oriental question. Unlike burleys kentuckys virginias and all the subcategories which people generally can conjure up a flavour when discussed there seems a very generic use of the term oriental. perhaps this is the case. But considering latakia, an oriental, and the huge influence it has one never hears so much the subtleties of other oriental which includes Basma, Yenidje, Smyrna, Drama, Xanthe which are Greek, Samsun and Izmir from Turkey and of course Latakia either Cypriot or Syrian which is also oriental by definition. So i am never sure or understand what to expect or imagine what flavour people are stating when saying oriental..or is it a general flavour? Does the mix orientals have an effect, and generally the oriental components never stated. Anyhow thanks again wonderful video as evening here was enjoyable to watch smoking a last bit of GL Pease Meridian and ponder what orientals in this. Regards and Respect always.
Mikey O I am very uneducated regarding orientals and in fact, they give me the most trouble identifying in a blend. The only description I can give with the orientals I've managed to taste is that they remind me of the sparkles in a fireworks show. They're very obvious, but they are like short pops of flavor if you will. Perhaps someday I'll get a better handle on them.
Sorry to disappoint, but the handle on orientals must be lost. I have search for years. I do agree about the missing information as to the orientation of the oriental.. Throughout the years there have been tobaccos in this category that have disappeared and then reappear as another name. if you look through the current descriptions and review some of the older descriptions this becomes apparent. I don't have a list, sorry if it sounds vague. but an example would be three nuns and .. gosh can't think fast enough to state names. I will come back to this subject in videos. as always enjoy the video and discussion HHJJ
Sue Dunhill I have blending orientals, and even smoking a bowl of those doesn't make it any easier to describe their qualities. I suppose it's like trying to describe what bay leaf does to Beef Stew.
exactly !!! I lost a bet, I thought I could define and recognize the subtle differences. WRONG I was so wrong!! lol never bet on an instinct.
I just ordered an 8 oz tin of this, cant wait to try it..
It's full flavor, and absolutely delicious, but take my advice and don't overdo it!
Still watching
Good every thing ,thank for the review on the plum pudding.I have been going back and forth on whether I should try it or not.I guess I will try it.a couple of years ago I only heard negative opinions. Now of late all I hear is good, could they have changed the mix? Anyway brother have a great day take care
I was thinking they changed the formula not too long ago. I have some stored that's about three or so years old and it's VERY different. More cavendish, more salty. I think it's better now, more balanced, but unless I got a bad batch the first few orders, there's a definite difference.
patpope49 Not sure Pat. All I can say is I've had quite a few bowls and it's really very good!
Awesome REVIEW.....
Wild Bill Thank you Wild Bill!
I'll try it soon, John. Hope you are well?
Except for the heat, all is fine!
I’ve always fancied Plum Pudding...but it’s got the big L in it. Think they do a Reserve as well.
It sure does have the big L in it!
Nice intro!
Heg2013 Thank you!
I just bought a couple ounces of some nice fresh Blended tobacco from the local tobacconist. He swears on it he says it has no tongue bite. Had a question, What do you think about smoking different tobacco's in the same pipe. He told me you should smoke one blend per pipe, what are your thoughts?
+Frank Gee This is a common thought which may apply to some, but not all. First off, the pipe doesn't care. Second, this is a personal preference depending on how "pure" you want the smoke to be. Certainly, I'd never want to mix heavy aromatics up with anything else, however, mixing burley,VA, VA/Pers, and English is not a big deal...for me anyway. Lighter aromatics won't mess much with your palate either. Hope that helps a bit.
i dont even smoke and this makes me want to go buy a pipe and p pudding !
+Tony Marty LOL, well we don't want to appear we're endorsing smoking, but for those who do, Plum Pudding is a must try!
true!
good intro
subbed.
Unfortunately for me, I find SPC's Special Reserve Blends of their famous Plum Pudding and Mississippi River way to bland for me. Actually, I think they're tasteless.
I don't know why I can't get the pleasures that other Pipers get from these Blends. Could it be because all my pipes are too new with hardly any cake buildup? Even in a Cob Pipe I get nothing. While If think Life is Good, sometimes it sure isn't fair!
Next week, I'll buy a tin of SPC's regular Plum Pudding to see if it's any better. I hope so, but if not, I will blend in more Latakia and/or Perique. I need it to be stronger.
I found Plum Pudding to be just a bit short of Pirate Kake in the flavor strength department and pretty close to something like Billy Budd. It is very possible that your your taste profile is slightly different from average. I have run across a few folks who claim to taste nothing no matter what they smoke. For myself, I can never detect the licorice/anise flavoring found in many blends. Perhaps we all have some sort of taste curse LOL.
smoked some of that yesterday. best I've had some far
+Joe Black Don't over do it like I did! I never want to see the stuff again LOL.
