"Primary" is an absolute classic from that period. Robert plays six string bass, which is a hybrid instrument, not properly a bass as it has a much wider sound range. He plays the main melody on six sting bass on countless songs from many albums. He's kinda known for the gorgeous tone uses on his fender six string bass. "Funeral Party" was written for Ian Curtis if I'm not mistaken.
I urge you to do Japanese Whispers from 1983, Alex. This was an album put together from two EPs in that year, but sounds like a congruent studio album. For me, it's better than all the Cure albums that came before it. It includes Let's Go To Bed, The Walk, and The Lovecats. It also shows how the influence of synth music was affecting The Cure's output at the time. For instance, Robert Smith admitted The Walk was their reaction to New Order's Blue Monday.
I felt almost offended when you said The Drowning Man was just “ok”, lol. It has been my favorite Cure song for decades. Such a haunting sound. Amazing vocals, lyrics, production etcetera. Did you listen to the same song? And Charlotte Sometimes was just “decent”. Ouch. Another one in my top five list.
@@AlexHaitz Glad to hear so. It's been great following your The Cure journey. Btw: 1st Outside is one of the best and most overlooked Bowie albums (recorded in the 90's). Hope you'll someday give that one a try too ;-)
I have, actually! Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/fpfignAPA8Y/v-deo.html I've done 12 Bowie albums, and will be doing 6 more once I'm finished with Sonic Youth.
The Funeral party is my favorite too. Badalamenti's music at Twin Peaks has a similar atmosphere. But I think maybe the best is The drowning man, the way he describes a death by drowning is brutal!
Strange to see someone hearing this album for the first time 40 years after it was made. Anyways, Charlotte sometimes is one of their best early singles. And really , possibly the most Goth song they ever did. Video helped support that. Faith is an awesome song. Most long time Cure fans love it. All cats are grey foreshadows a lot of classic songs for the Cure it's really their first melodic slow song. Overall, Faith is in my #6 in my top Cure albums.
ICYDK - Doubt is the first in an occasional series of songs lyrically personifying depression and/or doubt as an enemy that he has to physically fight off and try to kill. See also Prayers For Rain and, for a more demented version, Give Me It. Faith gains in stature once you've heard some of those live versions where Robert adlibs lyrics
Carnage Visors is 3 minutes' worth of riffs stretched out over nearly 30 minutes - easily to overlook. The b-side Descent is basically an excerpt - though not the same performance.
Alex, very happy to have just joined your Patreon, I really appreciate your earnest, analytical approach... even if I sometimes feel a bit butthurt after you shred albums and artists that I've loved for decades (Unknown Pleasures, Remain in Light, for example). Not sure if I'll have much time for the Discord channel. I'll try, but I work 60 hour workweeks and am taking 2 classes. I'd be fascinated to how you'd react to Siouxsie and the Banshee's discography, honestly. Juju is extremely well regarded, and although that album may be a little aggressive for your tastes, John McGeoch's guitar on that album has been praised by everyone from Johnny Marr to Radiohead. Also, Robert Smith played with them off and on, and was definitely influenced by them. Interestingly, I've somewhat overlooked SATB for years because Siouxsie has always been portrayed as this kind of sexy goth icon, which is rather sad, and I've honestly had to do some soul searching about that. But they were much more musically, and had a lot to say. Incredible band.
@@AlexHaitz of course man, keep up the good work. Gotta say, I'm fascinated by your taste. I seem to like many of the tracks that you don't, it's honestly become funny to me at this point. However, with "Doubt", I think most agree. The track just doesn't fit. Not that Robert has always cared about that, I suppose!
Doubt is a bad track, I think it was only put on it, to change the mood. All cats are grey, Drowning Man , Faith , Funeral Party will really grow on , The Holy Hour and Other voices are still great tracks too.
Doubt is the anger side of the depression, it is the precursor of Pornography. Not my favorite song and it is one I used to skip, but I understand why it is in there.
I love doubt, I don't understand why some people don't like it. But hey, outside of Friday I'm in love and high, you can't find a The Cure song I don't dig.
Easily one of my faves and I don't think I am the first to point to the similarities between Lazarus and The Drowning Man. Bowie was a big The Cure endorser.

Title track 'Faith' became the way how they used to close live shows , it's quintessential work from Robert and co. and very influencing, atmospheric, has a relatable depths and meaning to it for lots of ppl , idk how u didn't notice , but , Daft punk have totally ripped it's melody off on 'Instant Crash' , it was also influence for Russian post punk act 'KINO' , which's singer is appreciated among every russian, lol, The Cure are 20% studio and 80% live , i get , this track didn't hit u , but would still recommend checking out The Cure faith 1981 Sydney capitol live , 9+ minutes long version and it doesn't even boring , at least for me
You just can’t have one listen, a camera in your face and appreciate this album this is stupid. You have to have lived with it for a while otherwise don’t bother
After watching reactions on your channel to Cure albums, I kind of feel like The Cure just isn't a band for you. If it's not a radio single, they're not the most accessible and palatable band to dive into. I poured into Wish when I was 15 and became a big fan so The Cure are a part of my history. But I think if I first listened to their earlier stuff now in 2022 I'd probably not be that interested so I kind of get it.
Not sure what you mean, because I love The Cure. I love their pop side and their more ambient soundscape work. Not huge on their early rougher post punk material, but that’s about it.
Faith is more dispersed and less focused than was Seventeen Seconds which is the most coherent album and the one with the most unity in their discography. On Faith, the faster "Primary" and "Doubt" break the fluidity of the songs around them, however the six remaining songs are quite successful and manage to capture the attention. My favorite of all remains "All Cats Are Grey" which is certainly my most beloved track of the whole band's repertoire, and the one I like least is the lame "Doubt" which is one of the worst tracks in the band's career. "Charlotte Sometimes" is an excellent non-album single recorded four months after the album sessions. However I never liked its B side "Splintered in Her Head" which reminds me of a bad trip. The other interesting track that you didn't do here is the almost 28 minute instrumental "Carnage Visors: The Soundtrack" which was on the B-side of some cassette copies of Faith. This one served as a backing track to a short film who was screened at the beginning of shows in place of a support band on the 1981 Tour. About Matthew Hartley, Robert Smith said Hartley wanted to do keyboard solos or that sort of thing, while Smith wanted simple keyboard layers instead, so Robert chose to dismiss him and do it himself.

I think it's my favourite out of them all
I sure as fuck hope your follow-up has you loving this album far more than you initially like it. This album is a fucking masterpiece.

You called, Faith, song boring? calling 911 to have you arrested immediately!
It's deliberately drab and draining, as the need for religion is. It's a symmetrical appropriation of the hopelessness in the absence of faith.
I dunno why but I relate more to the hopelessness of lack of faith@@seanp8220

Lament & Just One Kiss
although of "Just one kiss" I prefer the long version side-b of the maxi-single "Let's go to bed"
I mean, The Walk was written before BM came out, so they are more contemporary, or at least that is what I remember from Ten Imaginary Years...
