  • The invention of light bulbs it surely is one major invention that laid the stepping stone for many future inventions. The modern-day bulbs are not what people have been using traditionally. Light bulbs have seen an evolution over the years which has helped the human species in many more ways than we can imagine. From increasing the average workday to being a constant companion in the dark nights. Now sit back and watch to the end of this video as I reveal to you the full history and Evolution of the light bulb.
The history and Evolution of the light bulbs all started with the Natural Light source.
    Natural Light
One of the most well known examples of historical architecture utilizing daylight through its design is the Pantheon.
70,000 years ago - Manmade Light Begins, Torches
Once humans gained control of fire, they soaked a towel or rag in a flammable liquid and then wrapped it around a wet stick and ignited flammable end. These torches were used to see while daylight was not available.
4,500 BCE - invention of Oil Lamps
During the Upper Paleolithic age, indented rocks or hollowed out pottery were filled with oil and lit. This invention made fire far more portable, so light was more accessible during nights.
    Jan 1, 1792 - Gas Lamps
Candles ruled a broad sect of lighting for over 4.5 millennia, but in 1792, the flammability of gas for the practical use of lighting was introduced. Gaseous fuels like propane, methane, and coal-gas would heat the lamp to where it gave off light.
Oct 22, 1879 - Thomas A. Edison creates first Incandescent Bulbs
In 1879, Thomas Edison, a well known American inventor, was searching for a way to make his bulb last longer. his electric bulb gave his light a life of roughly 1200 hours, a 10,000% increase on his previous light that burnt out after 13 hours.
1901 - invention of Mercury Vapor Lights
Concurrently with the battle between incandescent and fluorescent, mercury vapor lights, invented by Peter Cooper Hewitt, were the first bulbs to be compatible with standard electrical infrastructure and still a highly efficient light.
1959 - First Halogen light bulbs- Improving the filament
Unlike the regular incandescent light bulb used earlier, a halogen (such as iodine or bromine) is used in the bulb. This improves the life of the Tungsten filament. Also, the illumination is better as the halogens have atoms distributed so the light produced covers a better distance.
1976 - Edward Hammer created CFLs - The Compact Florescent Lights
It was the oil crisis of 1973 that forced the scientists to develop a lighting solution that consumes less energy. In 1976, Edward Hammer found a way to bend the florescent tubes which created the first CFL. The Compact Florescent Lights, commonly known as CFLs, offer a considerable increase in the illumination as compared to Halogens Light bulbs and Incandescent Light Bulbs.
1962 - First light emitting diode (LED) by Nick Holonyak
The light emitting diode (LED) that we see so often in today's world was originally produced in 1962, by Nick Holonyak. These revolutionary lights are far more energy efficient, and are, therefore, cheaper for the consumer to use.
21st century - Light Emitting Diodes- The future is here
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) uses semiconductors (generally Gallium Arsenide) to emit light. LEDs don’t have a filament that gets hot and breaks after a certain amount of time; instead, they are illuminated by the movement of semiconductor electrons.
Semiconductors are a gem of the periodic table. They work as an insulator in the normal state but when they get excited, they work as a conductor.
