Many say this role doesn't suit Pavarotti...it is true it was written with darker voices in mind...but Pavarotti was not an ordinary tenor...he brings a musicality to the role lacking in others and his uniqueness I daresay allows him in some degree a certain licence not grantable to other lesser mortals......this should be seen as a complementary version of Otello which does not challenge darker forms such as offered by Domingo. we should be glad that he gave us this to remember him by.
I sang in the chorus. I never knew of this video, but I don't think it exists, commercially. And yes, Pavarotti had the flu. He had a cooler on stage with ice, water, apple slices, etc. Distracting as hell and noisy during quieter moments. Amazing experience in Chicago and at Carnegie...
The orchestra is great, the choir is sloppy in places. I would drill the hell out of them to enter together and in place. In this video Lucianos' Esultate sounds fuller than in the finally approved recording.
The Big P must have just about learnt to read music by this point in his career (no less an authority than Ricky Bonynge affirmed he could not) - in any case what a triumph for commercialism and a travesty for operatic casting
Thank you so much for this video!🥰❤🌹
In many ways I prefer Pavarotti's Otello to Domingo's.
Awwwww-man! I wish it hadn't cut off when, I just KNOW, Pava was about to reveal a gem of technique on this!
