My heart breaks for Russell.
My hope is you are surrounded with love and peace.
There is no pain like the pain of losing a spouse.
None.
My mother said the loss of a child was worse.
She lost my Dad in 1980 to cancer at 43 years old, and then a year later lost my sister to complications to MS.
Then several years later, she lost a grandchild to cancer at 3 years old.
I think the other losses felt worse because he wasn't there to help her through them.
For me, they were all equal in pain.
As a widower myself 8 yrs on /11/2024 I admire you both for making a home for Allie's dad. He is going to need you both very much now. His emotions are going to be hard. He loved your mother so much and now he's alone and is living a new strange life now. I was married for over 34yrs and I'm still struggling and miss her everyday. Praying for everyone. Godspeed

Not everyone will agree with this post, I've thought about even if I should post it, but here it is. I lost my wife of 63 years last February, Russell will need his own space, he already has a home and should not give it up until time passes. You have created a great place for Russell to visit, however he needs space, peace and quiet at time. He will not be able to separate grief and depression until time passes. Your grief is not the same as his grief. In Russell's new life grief will be part of his life. Russell cannot live your life, he will not always be able change overnight. Give him space, time to think and a great place to visit but not a full time new home.

Absolutely .... Think two points of mine are very important. Russell needs a home of his own, a temporary stay is great. Russell needs peace and a place he can talk with his departed spouse. The loss of a spouse is far more different than Allie or Trents grief , only Russell can experience this and it's almost impossible to explain. This will talk a very long time. Trent and Allie are doing an exceptional effort to help Russell, we are have them in our prayers. @@leoaz4667

Being "available" for a widowed parent is crucial to get them through the early stages of loss. What you have done, is beyond, in fact exemplary. You are fortunate to have the space in your home to do so!

Oh my gosh, that little Leo is just the cutest little guy. He’s a special little boy, a little shy, with his handsome smile. I think he knows he’s the coolest kid around. You can’t help but love him. So so cute.
I grew up living with my grandpa. There’s something just so special about grandpas. ❤

You guys are amazing! Having your Dad stay with you is no little thing. My Dad lived with me for about 5 years until his dementia got so bad we had to move him to a nursing home (which was very hard to do). Enjoy every minute with him cause tomorrow is never promised. 💜

So sad you lost your mom. We just learned today that our cousins’ mom was diagnosed with ALS recently. Yesterday she was placed in Hospice. Praying for all of you. Hugs!

BUT- he needs a bathroom ! A real bathroom. Wait for a broken toe in the middle of the night, going across the gym, up the stairs, thru the kitchen to half bath in laundry room. He needs his own BATHROOM and doors on the closet. I give him a month
@@barbaraploetz1004 Perhaps a composting toilet in the corner of the room might provide for his immediate needs. He would need to be out of the room for a while to plumb in a bathroom.
I hear you - BUT, Allie's father is not old and frail. He is capable of walking up the stairs to the use the bathroom. A lot of folks do not have on suite bathrooms and function just fine. @@barbaraploetz1004

Guys the bedroom is so nice! So much thought and work went into it. Russell seemed really happy with it and Leo likes it too! Quite a snowstorm to deal with when picking up Russell. The steak dinner sounded just great. Trent and Allie, you worked very hard to make everything nice for Russell and I'm sure he appreciates it from the bottom of his heart. It will be a time of healing for you all. Take care.

Leo is going to love seeing his grandpa every day and it’s great that Russell gets to see Leo develop and grow. As Russell grows older, the stairs to his room may be difficult for him. You may want to put in a first floor addition with a private bath in years to come.
Dad needs a nice recliner in his room for when he wants to get away and read or just be.

I can remember how lost my Dad felt when my mum died really suddenly, no time to even say our goodbyes and how worried we were that he wouldn't cope and all you can do in that time is come together as a family and show your love. He was so much stronger than we thought that he would be, he is with my mum now, breaks my heart seeing your Dad going through this , so strange to see him without your mum but so glad he has you for support. The bedroom looked lovely and it's so nice that you could do that for him.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our 29 year old daughter to an asthma attack with the rhino virus in November. She is a mother of 3 under 10 years old. Nothing will ever take that pain away. I hope you find the comfort that we are finding slowly. We do love watching you guys.

I use to make dinner for my dad several times a week. My sister in laws did the other nights.
My heart goes out to your family. My husband is stage 7 dementia, with no support from either of our families, my heart is full with what you are providing. What a shock how quickly this tragedy took place.
PS I'm sure your dad will love the room, I think he needs an easy chair in there.

For hanging, get masking tape, put it where your screw holes are on your frame, mark the holes with marker. Take the tape off, apply where you want it on the wall with a level & screw/nail/drill through the marks depending on what it is (for weight obviously) then rip the tape off. 👌 much less involved than measuring constantly

When you feel cherished and cared for your quality of life is so much better. How you care for your dad is a great example for other families.

What a beautiful room. I want for Russell to know us widowers and widows know the pain he is experiencing, and it is one day at a time. One step forward and three steps backwards. In time, life becomes easier, the grief becomes your friend. This is a whole new life, one you never expected, you slowly ease into it. .
As soon as you mentioned putting the heirloom on your Mother's side of the family on Russell's bed, i was like rutro! [there's probably a lot more history behind that blanket, than us viewers know, and you might not even know, either.]

You both did an amazing job. Kudos to Brandon for his continued commitment to helping you make things go so smoothly as well. The room looks amazingly comfortable and the gym area looks really neat. I really love the wooden floor. I think Russell will really enjoy being with his grandson and I am sure this will help him whilst he has time to process. Then when you are ready and relaxed you’ll be able to share loving thoughts and memories of Lesley and watch Leo grow bigger. The fact that Russell will be able follow Trent’s current projects will give him other things to concentrate on and take his mind to other places whilst he grieves.
