- On Monday night, the twice-impeached criminally convicted felon-in-chief, who never served in the military, signed multiple executive orders that could have significant consequences for the armed services.
These directives call for extensive changes in the military, affecting troops who were discharged years ago due to COVID-19 vaccine mandates and eliminating politically motivated programs that prioritized race, gender, and sex over merit.
The executive order titled "Restoring America's Fighting Force" eliminates "race-based and sex-based discrimination within the Armed Forces of the United States." Trump claimed that the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion had corrupted the U.S. military and stated that this approach would no longer be in effect during his administration.
His executive order reinstates a policy from his first term that banned transgender individuals from serving in the military. This order rescinds a measure put in place by former President Joe Biden, which allowed transgender people to enlist and receive health coverage for gender-affirming care.
On Tuesday, two national LGBTQ+ advocacy groups filed a federal lawsuit challenging this executive order on behalf of six active-duty transgender service members and two prospective service members. The groups argue that the ban violates the equal protection clause of the Fifth Amendment.
